ACC May Send a Bowl Team to DC

If given the option of Boise or Washington, DC I’ll take Washington every time.

The proposed Congressional Bowl took a major step toward becoming a reality on Monday when it signed an agreement with the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Sean Metcalf, co-founder of the District of Columbia Bowl Commission, confirmed today that he has nailed down a deal to have the ACC fill a slot for the annual bowl. Plans call for a service academy to fill the other slot with the Naval Academy having already signed a contract to appear in the inaugural Congressional Bowl in 2008. Metcalf is close to signing an agreement with Army and also would like to get Air Force involved.

Good Luck, Clemson

The Clemson Tigers take the field tonight in the Chick-Fil-A bowl in what I think will be the ACC’s ‘defining’ bowl game of 2007. The Tigers game tonight against Auburn will only count as one game - the conference is currently a respectable 2-1 in bowls thusfar - but the magnitude of this battle with the SEC will ‘count’ more in most people’s minds than just one game.

With this said, we have posted a video to help ring in the New Year and hopefully to serve as a harbinger for a 2008 bowl appearance for Tom O’Brien’s Wolfpack!

The Boston College Eagles are gearing up to play Michigan State today in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando..and evidently, the Eagles aren’t very happy to be there. We provide the following from BC’s top blogger, Eagle in Atlanta:

Let me echo what Jags is saying — this is not where we wanted to be, but winning 11 games is still very important. This is also the last BC football game for nine months, so enjoy every moment.

More Info On Lack Of UVA’s Gator Bowl Ticket Sales

Even though this article is 10 days old, we thought everyone might want to read it. We also want to save it for future years when iit is bowl selection time.

Before we explain why we’ve come to that point, let’s rewind to 2002. I remember all the whining and complaining by Virginia fans that they were shafted by the bowl process.

The Cavaliers were 6-2 and tied with Maryland for second place in the league standings. The Terps went to the Peach Bowl, and N.C. State (which was 5-3) went to the Gator Bowl. Meanwhile, Virginia was sent to the Continental Tire Bowl, which turned out to be a good deal for the program, but didn’t stop the perception that bowls were out to get the Wahoos.

2007 Bowl Primer

Eleven years ago, there were 18 bowl games. Today there are 32, some operated by ESPN. No wonder the opposition to a playoff by the bowl system.

After a run of five in a row, NC State is home for the holidays for the third time in four years. With a more manageable schedule approaching coming in 2008 and Coach Tom O’Brien’s system and recruiting having a year to take root, there is a very good chance that this will be the last time the Wolfpack won’t be performing on a bowl stage for a long time.

2007 ACC Bowls and Bytes

The ACC Bowl Menu is set and can be seen by clicking here. Of course, if you read SFN then you would have seen that we accurately projected the entire bowl line up BEFORE Sunday.

A couple of interesting NC State tidbits:

* NC State played NINE GAMES against teams who played in bowls this year and finished the season and EIGHT GAMES against teams who finished with winning records.

* NC State finished the season with the exact number of wins against teams with winning records as the Southern California Trojans - two.
