N&O: Amato was right about Akron

I love this kind of stuff. I love looking back and reviewing issues with some hindsight and holding people accountable to their words.

Tip of the hat to the N&O for their insightful use of yesterday’s APR announcement.

Given the scholarship penalties handed out by the NCAA on Tuesday, Chuck Amato was a man ahead of his time in his criticism of Akron and the MAC school’s commitment to academic excellence.

The NCAA released the Academic Progress Rates on Tuesday and the Zips got zapped five scholarships for historical negligence and an APR score of 920 for the years between 2003 and 2007.

NC State Only ACC School Penalized by APR

Last week’s report where the NCAA honored 712 different teams throughout the country laid the groundwork for today’s broad release of the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report that effectively takes a scholarship away from NC State’s wrestling program.

You can access NC State’s specific report by clicking here.

* NC State is the ONLY school in the entire Athletics Coast Conference to be penalized with the loss of a scholarship in any sport.

* Additionally, N.C. State joins East Carolina, Gardner-Webb and UNC-Greensboro as the only schools in North Carolina penalized for failing to meet the NCAA standard for academic progress.

NCAA honors 712 teams, 192 schools (NC State not one of them)

No wonder Lee Fowler was so defensive last night as discussed in this entry, the news just keeps getting worse.

The men’s teams at the two national powers(UNC & Kansas), which met in the Final Four earlier this month, were included among 712 Division I squads singled out by the NCAA for their solid academic performance. Although the total number of teams publicly recognized dropped from 839 last year, 192 schools had at least one team finish among the top 10 percent of all schools in their sport…..….The ACC had 41 teams recognized.Duke led the ACC with 12 teams recognized. Davidson (14) was tops in North Carolina.
