League will NOT expand schedules…more

Despite a lot of talk recently, the leaders of the Atlantic Coast Conference decided yesterday not to consider a proposal to expand the number of conference games played in both football and basketball. The Charlotte Observer provides an update of league meetings in this article.

ACC schedules will not expand to nine conference games in football or 18 in men’s basketball, conference officials said Tuesday.

Some basketball coaches had expressed interest in an 18-game conference schedule, but the issue died this week at the ACC spring meetings when coaches were reminded that a year ago they committed to 16 conference games through 2010-11.

ACC Eyes Expanding BBall Schedule; Guess who is interviewed?

The ACC’s total of 19 NCAA tournament wins from 2006 to ‘08 is an all-time low for a three-year period since 1979-81, which was before the tournament expanded to 64 teams. The Big East, Pac-10 and Big Ten all play 18 conference games and got higher percentages of their members into the NCAA tournament in 2008.

The Charlotte Observer and the News and Observer ran the same article today stating, “amid concern over a lack of NCAA tournament at-large bids in two of the past three years, ACC athletics directors plan next month to discuss expanding the conference men’s basketball schedule to 18 games.”

Clemson Sets NCAA Record for Futility, Officiating Takes the Spotlight (Updated 3:15 pm)

Preface - Poor Oliver Purnell. Now he knows how Rick Barnes felt. And, we just happen to have a great little reminder for him of how Frank Haith felt last year that you can see by clicking here.

We are updating what was once the ‘open entry’ for Sunday with more fallout from Sunday’s Clemson-Carolina basketball game.

I’ve been swamped with work and and just haven’t had any time to be focused on the blog…so, it wasn’t until I went home for lunch and heard everyone on sports radio talking about the officiating last night until I realized that it really wasn’t just me who saw what I thought I saw on Sunday night. (You know, sometimes I worry).

Making Sense of the ACC

ESPN.com’s expanded ACC standings.

I probably should have added a question mark to the title, because it’s a difficult task. One thing is abundantly clear - Duke and UNC are significantly better than everyone else. I expect them both to be no worse than #2 seeds in the NCAAT. Damn it.

After that, it’s less clear. My gut has always said that Clemson is the third “good” team, but we have a statistically significant sample to analyze now. The Tigers are 0-2 in conference on the road, and only 3-3 overall (despite having played 4 home games). Perhaps more alarming is that Clemson needed overtime to hold off Wake and Florida State at home. Boston College is 3-2, but it’s hard to take them seriously after a home loss to Virginia Tech. The Eagles have also yet to face UNC, Duke, or Clemson.

Hess Holds Back on Roy

I fear the day that I am going to have to search our archives for the following quote from today’s Charlotte Observer in regards to the UNC-Nevada game last night. But, I just have a feeling and didn’t want to ignore this opportunity.

Referees aren’t enforcing the NCAA’s “bench decorum” mandate designed to punish angry coaches with technical fouls.

Roy Williams’ tirade over an inexplicable missed basket interference call warranted a technical under the new rules, but referee Karl Hess allowed him to protest.
