Carter-Finley Karaoke

NC State’s athletic department is currently taking votes for a sing-along anthem to be played between the third and fourth quarters at Carter-Finley Stadium. You can find the article and vote here.

Let’s take a look at the 3 songs mentioned in the first paragraph of the gopack.com article. First, “Sweet Caroline” was played at Red Sox games because Fenway’s music director had heard it played at other sporting events and would play it at random late in the game if the Sox were winning. The fans soon began to anticipate the song as a good luck charm and is now a tradition.

Save Tuffy!

This is personal for me. According to my folks, the roots of me becoming a loyal State fan (to a fault) stemmed from my fascination as a toddler with the Strutting Wolf.

The Tuffy of my childhood was rugged and vicious, leading us to a national title and two ACC titles. In the mid-90s, they tried to replace him with Sonic the Hedgehog, unsuccessfully (thank goodness). A few years ago they redressed him and gave him a trim and a shave to make us more marketable; few of us were pleased, most of us incensed. Now, he’s become increasingly scarce altogether; instead, we have Snake Eyes’ trusty companion Timber howling at the moon, sometimes with a few of his buddies (all guys aged 25 to 30 know that Snake Eyes was the coolest GI JOE).

WRAL: Small town Raleigh marveled at 74 Wolfpack

A great retrospective done by Dane Huffman at WRAL.com. Click here.

Then came in 1974 – and Raleigh became the epicenter of a story that would change college basketball. Duke was amazing in 1992, and North Carolina was phenomenal in ’82. But State was unique, in its talent and its time. The fading films and black and white photos still evoke an amazing team that remains the ACC’s best.

Newsflash - Paying Customers Don’t Like Being Treated Like Naughty 8-Year Olds

We saw this nugget from The Technician a few weeks ago, but didn’t have the time to express our thoughts at the time. In a finding which no doubt caused Bob Kennel to close his eyes and shake his head disapprovingly:

The WITH program has not received as much positive feedback as Student Government would have liked, according to Dawkins, and therefore the committee discussed having the WITH program organizers obtain more corporate sponsors, cutting back on policing, distributing water and koozies at games and trying more to encourage positive sportsmanship.

Bo Rein - Promising Start Ended Tragically

NC State’s Football program has been re-energized with Coach Tom O’Brien’s injection of hope for a nice steady climb back to respectability. The dream of this kind of future can’t help but harken names of Wolfpack-past like Edwards, Holtz, Sheridan and Rein.

I don’t hesitate to say that there are multiple generations of NC State fans who are not familiar with Rein and they should be. So, we have been saving this article about Bo Rein for a generally slow time of year like right now.

Where Amazing Happens…Happened

Tip of the hat to the Pack Pride message boards for highlighting this fantastic YouTube Video titled, “Where Amazing Happens - NC State”.

Without explicitly stating it, this video provides a damning commentary of the current nature of the NC State athletics program as the bulk of the actual achievements in the video all took place in the past with none taking place within the last four years. How about we rename it, “Where Amazing Happened”?

25th Anniversary - April 4, 1983; SFN Blogs the ‘Celebration’

Today’s entry is a two-parter. One part good. One part disgusting.

1983 Anniversary
Many on the faculty hate it. I’m sure most of the adminstrators are oblivious to it. The folks who don’t follow sports don’t understand it. Our rivals used to shake their head at it. But, today’s date is perhaps the most important date in the history of North Carolina State Univeristy.

A Little Nostalgia

ESPN Classic will air the 1983 national championship game between North Carolina State and Houston from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. ET on Friday, April 4. At 8 p.m., ESPN Classic will present a half hour original documentary “ESPN Classic Remembers: NC State Upsets Houston”, which will chronicle the 1983 Wolfpack season. The documentary will re-air at 12:30 a.m. ET on Saturday.

ESPN’s Heather Dinich profiles the oft-forgotten reserve freshman, Ernie Myers, who played only a single minute in that 1983 Championship game but was instrumental in the Pack’s run towards the tournament, filling in for the injured Dereck Whittenburg, who had missed 14 games with a fractured foot.

DT Lifted ACC Sky High

What else did you think that NC State fans had to discuss the week of the 2008 ACC Tournament? The early 1970s, of course!

All sarcasm aside, the Charlotte Observer’s Ron Green ran a great piece today calling David Thompson “The Best Ever” in the best basketball league in America. Green’s piece can be read by clicking here.

“Now I know why Tigers eat their Young”

There could, and maybe should have been an open thread just on fond rememberances of the ‘83 Championship team running non-stop all night. 25 years, could it really have happened that long ago? RR was in office and I was six years old and occasionally glancing the rim with my jump shot. In short, it would be good for me as a Wolfpack fan to absorb some of the magic that transpired here a quarter century ago.

Campout Fiasco (Updated)

‘Crisis’ averted. Friday morning update -

“After much consideration and work by student leaders, specifically Jay Dawkins, an agreement was reached with Dr. Tom Stafford. The agreement was reached that all 2,847 tickets will be allotted to Campout.”

The following was our original entry on the topic as of Thursday night:

For the years that we have been running this blog (and Statefans.com before it) we have had a community where our readers have been so appreciative that they have asked “What can we do to support you guys? Won’t you take up some donations or something?”

Tough loss, on dealing with one — Valvano philosophy

If you’re a passionate fan as I am, who believes as Vince Lombardi does that “Show me a ‘good loser’ and I’ll show you a loser,” it’s good to keep this Valvano advice in mind:

Jimmy V says he’ll allow his players 24 hours to feel sorry for themselves and curse the basketball gods. Then, he says, he’ll tell them to pick up their butts and get back in the mainstream.

SFN Celebrates New Year with NC State Magazine Feature

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This entry will remain posted near the top for a couple of days…so, if you are visiting the site for the first time or if you are a frequent visitor please don’t ignore all of the entries below. For example, VAWolf logged an awesome statistical post that follows this.

We just wanted to take a moment to draw your attention to the newest edition of the NC State Alumni Magazine that hit most homes over the last week. Starting on page 36 and ending on page 45 you will see that the magazine printed a series of articles on the impact of the internet at NC State and on the NC State community. We’d like to thank the NC State Alumni Magazine for the attention and prominence that they applied to StateFansNation in the feature piece.

Good Luck, Clemson

The Clemson Tigers take the field tonight in the Chick-Fil-A bowl in what I think will be the ACC’s ‘defining’ bowl game of 2007. The Tigers game tonight against Auburn will only count as one game - the conference is currently a respectable 2-1 in bowls thusfar - but the magnitude of this battle with the SEC will ‘count’ more in most people’s minds than just one game.

With this said, we have posted a video to help ring in the New Year and hopefully to serve as a harbinger for a 2008 bowl appearance for Tom O’Brien’s Wolfpack!

The End of V Week

Business and other responsibilities kept us from focusing very much on Jimmy V Week…so, we thought that we would link to this entry.

Additionally, you should check out the Hoop Dreams program over at Duke.

CBS ran a feature on this program in March of 2005 and I started an entry that I never finished, but I never forgot.

If interested in helping Hoop Dreams fulfill its mission, contact the program at 479-6069 or at info@hoop-dreams.net.

Calling All Wolfpack Marines

As a commenter pointed out to us last offseason, Tom O’Brien’s first rivalry game with UNC just happens to fall on the Marine Corps’ “birthday.” You will also remember that at the most recent athletics’ banquet, Coach O’Brien pledged that the football team would stand next year as a unit that beat Carolina. Given the scars of history that all Wolfpack fans bear, I wouldn’t recommend even a bit of cockiness. But if you want some intangibles to point to for good mojo, there you go.

Rivalry Week - An Opponent’s Perspective

Earlier, this year, I asked a friend of mine to write a guest post outlining his perspective of the State/Carolina rivalry. Some background - he is an avid ACC historian and trivia king (rivals our own noah on those fronts), a “friend of the blog,” and the only “football first” UNC fan that I have ever met. He actually attended the thrashing in Death Valley last year - I shit you not. We eagerly await the likely return of BLS in the comments. Without further ado, here are the words of ACC Guru:

Will you PLEASE get this message out?!

If you want some ECU, then hopefully you didn’t miss our pre-game/in-game entry or our first postgame entry. We’ll have a little more State-ECU talk during the week since we were busy with work last week and didn’t have a lot leading up to the game.

Today’s entry is focused on something much more broad in the NC State community. SFN is always looking for ways to offer improvement to NC State, and we sincerely can’t think of an easier topic to try to hammer home to Wolfpackers than the desperate need to change the way we cheer at NC State’s games. We’re serious. Hopefully, with your help, we can be a successful ‘change agent’ of a major flaw rooted deep within the NC State football/basketball environment.

Turning to Good News!!

About mid-way through the 2nd quarter of Saturday’s loss to UCF I turned to my friends and uttered something that I haven’t been able to say in almost twenty years when I asked– “When does basketball season start?”

In that spirit, it is worth noting a couple of basketball-related items to help us get into a better mood. (But, you must use what you read to NEVER FORGET the imcompetence and mismanagement that delayed this excitement for YEARS longer than was necessary.)

Last week, Dick Vitale listed ten teams that are improving and that he is looking forward to watching in the coming season.
