TOB Comments on the booing; Caulton Tudor gets it right

A question about the boos in Carter Finley Stadium was bound to be asked, so Tom O’Brien had no choice but to respond last night on his weekly radio show hosted at Sullivan’s in Raleigh.

Coach Tom O’Brien talked about how annoyed he was with the fan’s reactions to Evans play on his weekly radio show.

“It’s pretty frustrating to listen to people boo thinking it’s going to make somebody better,” O’Brien said Tuesday “By booing somebody, you don’t make them better.”

O’Brien went on to talk about how the boos could be a turnoff to potential recruits who attend games.

Pray for Russell Wilson

I don’t care who wins or loses this game anymore. I just want confirmation that he can move his legs (Erin Andrews claims he was moving his feet). If you hear anything, please say so in the comments.

UPDATE: Andrews says they are calling it a concussion. More tests pending.

Late pushes fall flat for Pack; Baseball represents last hope

After failed attempts to garner some kind of notable success by a couple of NC State’s non-revenue sports fell flat this week (men’s golf and women’s softball), NC State’s Baseball team remains as the last primary opportunity for Lee Fowler’s athletics department to do something special and win a “major” ACC Championship.

It is something that hasn’t happened at NC State in a LONG time. And, as you will see from the statistics below it is something that hasn’t happened at NC State in far too long when compared to other programs throughout the country.

Postseason Drought

Seems like it wasn’t so long ago that State’s football team punched America’s sweetheart in the mouth in the Gator Bowl (thanks Sean Berton), or that men’s basketball beat UConn at the buzzer to make the Sweet 16 or that Kay Yow led the Wolfpack Women to the Final Four.

But much like Falls Lake, State’s postseason appearances dried up this school year. While baseball is still in progress (and should make the NCAA tournament), the other three revenue programs failed to make a bowl game or the NCAA Tournament. That puts State in a category as one of five BCS schools to have that distinction.

SFN Voted “Best ACC Blog” of 2007

Many thanks to Rocky Top Talk for their kind words:

Continuity? Check. Their archives go back to December, 2004, which is the equivalent of being older than Adam in the college football blogosphere.

Community? Uh-huh. Comments on front page posts regularly reach into the mutiple scores. Any blogger who’s been around for awhile knows how much time and effort it takes to foster that kind of interaction.

SFN Celebrates New Year with NC State Magazine Feature

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This entry will remain posted near the top for a couple of days…so, if you are visiting the site for the first time or if you are a frequent visitor please don’t ignore all of the entries below. For example, VAWolf logged an awesome statistical post that follows this.

We just wanted to take a moment to draw your attention to the newest edition of the NC State Alumni Magazine that hit most homes over the last week. Starting on page 36 and ending on page 45 you will see that the magazine printed a series of articles on the impact of the internet at NC State and on the NC State community. We’d like to thank the NC State Alumni Magazine for the attention and prominence that they applied to StateFansNation in the feature piece.

ESPN’s Pat Forde on Lowe’s Miracle Run

If ever there was a “must read” article, this one is it. You can’t buy press this good. Something special is brewing in Raleigh, win or lose tomorrow afternoon. Sit back and feel the magic, and tell the kids your own stories about 1974, 1983, 1987, and every other moment of NC State’s proud basketball heritage. Tear-jerking excerpt:

As the latest upset wound to a conclusion Saturday, assistant coach Monty Towe leaned over and whispered in Lowe’s ear, “Happy birthday, Jimmy V.”

SFN Garners #2

StateFansNation experienced quite a year of growth and popularity in 2006.

Included in our growth was a significant amount of public recognition, most recently evidenced by our #2 finish in the ACC category in the College Football Bloggers Awards.

Link to story

State Fans Nation is one of the most vibrant, interactive communities on the web. Virtually every story generates a host of comments from engaged readers, while the content itself is always outstanding. I vividly recall madly refreshing SFN last year when Rick Barnes was rumored to be a candidate for the NC State basketball job. As good as their football coverage is, they find time to be a haven for fans of all NC State sports.

Clearing the Bubble

As the college basketball season moves into the last month of the season, bracketology and bubble talk will fill the air waves and internet message boards. After the last five seasons, there is probably no fan base better qualified to discuss the minimum requirements necessary to clear the bubble and land in the NCAAT than NC State fans. So I thought that I would comb back through last season’s discussions and update everything that we’ve learned about clearing the bubble into one large entry. So without further ado…..

DEFINING THE BUBBLE

The N&O comes one step closer to “Understanding Wolfpack Fans”

It only took NC State’s hometown newspaper a couple of years for it to sink in, but it’s starting to sink in.

First, a SFN Flashback to March 2005, in an entry entitled Understanding Wolfpack Fans, Part 1:

Today’s myth I’d like to tackle is one that we see quite frequently in the winter. It’s the idea that NC State fans judge a coach just on his personality. It’s usually expressed in this fashion: NC State fans don’t like Herb Sendek because he doesn’t have the personality of Chuck Amato or Jim Valvano.

SFN Impact Update

Some of the nice comments from our readers in this entry from Tuesday prompted today’s quick reflective note.

Bank in July we gave you an update of how our blog had exploded during the year and shared some of our statistics with you. You can see our comments by clicking here. Today we thought that we would quickly re-address this topic with some recent anecdotes.

For example, two weekends ago we received suggesting that we visit the News & Observer’s website and review the newspapers “Most Viewed Stories in the last 24 hours” last Sunday night (Oct 29th). At the time, the most viewed story of the 24 hours was the paper’s FEBRUARY story reporting that Bill Cowher had bought a house in Raleigh.

SFN: What A Year (thusfar)!!!

Excerpt: “In the first seven months of the year, SFN has attracted almost 150,000 different visitors from around the world, generating just under 8 million hits and 2.5 million different page views of unique SFN material.

We couldn’t be more proud of the breadth and depth of our growing reach considering that we are just a homespun blog with an extremely narrow focus of topic. Additionally, SFN has never embarked on any campaign or strategy to drive traffic to the site for the purposes of increasing hit count; instead choosing to focus on the quality of our product through hard work, dedication and a passion for NC State.”

Fire the Bum!

Has your favorite sports message board been overtaken by the cries of “Fire the Bum and the counter-argument “Support our Coach? Are you ready to drive off of the Information Superhighway to avoid the redundant drivel? Have you considered posting a warning sign for unsuspecting travelers: “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here?

Experienced cyber-surfers are well aware of the various “Flame Warriors that inhabit internet discussion groups. Sports message boards have a few additional species that are detailed below. Seasoned readers of sports boards will no doubt recognize many of the frequent posters on their favorite board. For the less experienced readers, you can use this list to identify the various characters that are already on your newest board….just another public service from SFN.

Delong’s Delights

Just after Sidney Lowe was hired, John Delong of the Winston-Salem Journal wrote an outstanding piece that we never chronicled here and wanted to take a couple of minutes to get it on the site.

Good Call: In Lowe, State gets what it needs … a State guy .

This piece was fantastic. It was the absolute BEST article that we saw in the mainstream media regarding Lowe’s hire. The piece highlighted more of the different complex different elements related to Lowe’s hire.

She’s Going….Going…..Gone!

For those that don’t know me or haven’t read any of my entries here…..I’ll let you in on a little secret: I have been called an opinionated SOB on more than one occasion…and I have never been called bashful. I have never met Bob Lee Swagger, but suspect that we have shared some of these same incidents.

He absolutely nailed it in one of his recent columns. Here is a brief excerpt:

Why You Need to Be FIRED UP!

Finally! Someone in the media writes a home run piece discussing reality!! And, it ended up being a self-proclaimed Tarheel? We’ll take any dose of reality that we can get. Thank, you Matt Rehm.

Today’s piece on CBS Sportsline (not written by Gregg Doyel; Don’t Feed the Troll) is a a great read.

Some Wolfpackers have jumped off the deep end after State’s ‘misses’ on Rick Barnes and John Calipari. Some have even replied to potential candidates with comments like “I’d rather have Sendek.”

That’s absurd.

Caulton, We Couldn’t Have Said It Better

The N&O’s ACC Now Blog posted Caulton Tudor’s Monday article, and it is a must read. Bravo!

(As of 9:10pm ET, the N&O’s ACCNow Blog is encountering technical problems.)

You are going to love this article! And, some Wolfpackers are going to feel compelled to apologize to Caulton Tudor for some criticisms that you have levied against him in the past.

To be fair, Tudor has done a phenomenal job supporting the general historical truth regarding NC State’s Basketball program and tradition over the last few years. This is just another example of it. We here at SFN are very appreciative of his work.

Because We’re NC State

BECAUSE WE’RE NC STATE, AND WE BUILT THIS HISTORIC RIVALRY
By beowolf

Several sports commentators have reacted to NC State’s ambitious coach search and fans’ expectations with anything from incredulity to outright anger. The gist of their reactions is an old chestnut now to Wolfpack fans. It basically goes as follows: “There is NO WAY NC State can compete against Roy Williams and Coach K, so they shouldn’t even try.”

I’m sure it makes sense to people outside of the Triangle, if not the Atlantic Coast Conference region. But to the rest of us, it smacks of sports commentators accustomed to hearing only themselves talk in their echo chambers of ignorance.
