Sam Jones thread mysteriously disappears from Pack Pride forum

A member of the Pack Pride message board community posted a thread on the website’s free board this morning proclaiming that he/she had a personal relationship with the family of Wolfpack signee, Sam Jones and that Jones had failed to take an Algebra II class that is a requirement for admission at NC State.

The poster on Pack Pride claimed that Jones was therefore not going to be allowed to enroll at NC State and that the family had already contacted Chuck Amato at Florida State since FSU does not have the same admission requirements for the math class as NC State.

A special thanks to those of you who emailed us at statefans@gmail.com to draw our attention to this article. As many of you experience, we (unfortunately) are painfully slow to get to our emails. (It’s just the nature of being stretched to thin.

Our readers will enjoy this feature on Markus Kuhn written by Mark Schlabach at ESPN.com.

Please note that this is not just a little piece restating what you already know; this is a comprehensive feature on Kuhn that shouldn’t be missed.

NC State Football Recruit Tobias Palmer Wins State 2-A 100M Dash (Updated 5/13)

May 10th
Pretty cool. Check this out:

For the boys, Northwood senior Tobias Palmer, an N.C. State football and track recruit, won the 100 meters with a time of 10.58. He ran an 11.09 at regionals. “This was my last chance,” said Palmer, who wanted to win badly after taking sixth last year and second place as a sophomore.

May 13th
I was looking through my new ACC Area Sports Journal today at lunch and noticed a profile of Palmer in their “Galaxy of Stars” section that was obviously very timely. I am linking the article here (I am an online subscriber to the publication, so I do not know if the online version of this article is ‘premium’.)

Butch adds the head coach of a top recruit to his staff as Director of Player Personnel

Butch Davis is pulling out all the stops to attract top players to UNC.

Carolina is off to a quick start in 2009 recruiting with 11 commitments so far, including 4-star prospect Josh Adams who is mentioned in the linked article. It seemed like odd timing for Adams to commit so early in the process, however it makes a little more sense now:

Since his departure from Cambridge in December, Paul Gonnella said he has been all over the country, around the clock, in search of the right coaching job. Finally, the most prominent virtue he expressed -– patience -– appears to have paid off.

Football Recruiting to Take Center Stage

image

With signing day less than 24 hours away, college football recruiting will take center stage this week. To its credit, the Charlotte Observer who traditionally gives us LOTS of things to criticize ran two particularly interesting articles today focused on college football recruiting complete with a detailed budget of the schools that can be seen by clicking here.:

Carolinas Schools Spend Generously to Woo Recruits
and
Area Colleges Rollout Red Carpet for Recruits

Each school itemizes in its own way, so it’s impossible to proclaim a Carolinas recruiting budget champion. But North Carolina ($449,347) and Clemson ($401,083) each spent more than $400,000 and South Carolina ($283,505) and N.C. State ($243,462) more than $200,000 in 2006-07.

Who knew getting commitments from South Carolina was such a big deal?

Today’s Charlotte Observer provides us a great opportunity to bring a couple of recent stories together for a quick note. There is certainly nothing earth shattering here; just some interesting observations.

Earlier this week we shared two different entries that you should read if you havent. One was an entry focused on NC State football recruiting in light of Sterling Lucas’ commitment to the Wolfpack on Tuesday (click here for link). The other was a good entry that turned into a fantastic conversation about the media that was built on the Charlotte Observer’s poor and slow coverage of NC State football recruiting (click here for link).

Wolfpack Nabs LB Recruit From South Carolina; More Recruiting (Updated)

South Carolina linebacker Sterling Lucas, was rumored to be a ‘lock’ for the University of South Carolina…that is until he committed to NC State this morning.

Lucas is considered one of the Top 25 middle linebackers in the country and chose the Wolfpack over offers from UNC-CH, USC, Maryland, Michigan State and Wake Forest.

Lucas becomes the 4th major linebacker prospect committed to the Wolfpack in this recruiting class joining Terrell Manning (see commitment entry), William Beasley and Dwayne Maddox (see commitment entry). It is generally understood that Terrell Manning will redshirt next year to give his injured knee sufficient time to rehabilitate therefore opening the door for one of the other three commits to potentially earn playing time as a true freshman.

Charlotte Observer Over A Week Behind with Information

The Charlotte Observer ran a feature article about college football prospect, Robert Quinn today. To the side of the conclusion of the article on page 3C the Observer listed their Top 50 recruits in North Carolina and South Carolina. Why would I be surprised that they listed RJ Mattes as uncommitted with seven potential schools when Mattes publicly committed to NC State eight days ago and has called every coach recruiting him and asked them to stop their recruitment?

O’Brien Gets Big Time OL Recruit: RJ Mattes

Big time. Four Star NC OL RJ Mattes has committed to NC State.

Can’t over state the importance of this. You’ve got to think that the reputation of developing NFL offensive lineman by Coach O’Brien and his staff was vital here. We couldn’t be more excited about this!

Mike Glennon Named Player Of The Game In The Under Armour All-American Game

Mike Glennon had an impressive performance in the Under Armor HSAA Game. Here is a live blog from the game. If you watched the game on ESPNU, give us your thoughts in his game in the comments section.

SFN Celebrates New Year with NC State Magazine Feature

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This entry will remain posted near the top for a couple of days…so, if you are visiting the site for the first time or if you are a frequent visitor please don’t ignore all of the entries below. For example, VAWolf logged an awesome statistical post that follows this.

We just wanted to take a moment to draw your attention to the newest edition of the NC State Alumni Magazine that hit most homes over the last week. Starting on page 36 and ending on page 45 you will see that the magazine printed a series of articles on the impact of the internet at NC State and on the NC State community. We’d like to thank the NC State Alumni Magazine for the attention and prominence that they applied to StateFansNation in the feature piece.

Recruiting: Incoming Wolfpack Class Impressive

From WRAL-TV

Even if national signing day occurred tomorrow, you could go ahead and count N.C. State’s recruiting year a success.Coach Tom O’Brien and his staff have already put together an impressive class of 19 prospects with more than a month to go before the signing period begins on Feb. 6.But it’s not just the quantity at this stage of the recruiting process that is impressive about the Wolfpack’s effort.

O’Brien has firmly established himself as a major player with in-state prospects and has addressed many of the program’s primary needs with his first full recruiting class since coming from Boston College.

Mike Glennon Washington Post All Metro Team

Hopefully Mike Glennon can play ASAP next year. He made the Washington Post All Metro team this season.

2 NC State Football Recruits Tear ACL on Friday Night

Two Wolfpack football recruits had knee injuries on Friday night, Terrell Manning and Colby Jackson.

The “UNC Is The Only Team That Is Young Argument”

All we have been hearing about is “how young UNC is this year”.Good stuff by James Henderson at PackPride.com, now you can judge for yourself.

Obviously recruiting matters, but you hear a lot about how young UNC is at every position, and rightfully so. However, NC State has some very young players contributing as well. On the current roster, I consider someone a sophomore or below as young because they should be on the team at least two more years. Listed below is a breakdown of every position with “young” players who have contributed noticably in bold or redshirting/not playing/incoming recruit not bolded. I think the team’s are more comparable than most people think.

Vermiglio & Roberts

I hope that you have had a chance to read our entry from earlier in the week when Coach O’Brien released the Wolfpack’s depth chart for the Central Florida game.

I was traveling when BJD posted the entry and was looking forward to making some comments about what I saw. Then I read what our insightful readers (like noah and Mr. O and others) had shared in the comments sectino and realized that there wasn’t much left for me to say!!! The community really nailed the analysis of what was important on the depth chart - like kicker, punter and some other positions. (Entries like that really make you appreciate the high quality of the readership and interaction at this blog!)

N&O: ‘NC State Landing Top Recruits in the State’

A nice day in the media for the Wolfpack’s football program.

On the same day that the N&O featured Coach O’Brien’s recruiting success with the state’s top NCHSAA players…

State’s ability to get commitments from the state’s top two prospects is noteworthy.

According to Scout.com, the only school to land the top two players from North Carolina since 2002 was Florida in 2006.

The Gators signed Southern Durham offensive tackle Carl Johnson, who was ranked No. 1, and Shelby Crest linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was No. 2.

Good News Continues - Manning Commits

You want to have some fun?

Take a look at this link and add “NC State” to the guy who is ranked#2…right after the #1 on the list that also has NC State as his college choice!!!

On the heels of this great news for our basketball program, NC State’s Football program got into the groove in a big way as Tom O’Brien added his 4th commitment from the State of North Carolina’s 15 best high school players.

Glennon Featured in SI Piece

After EJ Whitley chose Virginia Tech on Monday…we figured that it may be uplifting for some to briefly highlight a quick blurb we ran across in Sports Illustrated last week.

In a special to Sports Illustrated titled, ‘Unconventional thinking: Top QB recruits have made unexpected commitments’, recruiting analyst Mike Farrell mentioned NC State commitment, Mike Glennon in the following paragraph:

Centreville (Va.) Westfield quarterback Mike Glennon committed to N.C. State over offers from Michigan and others.
