Sporting News‘ annual list of the top sports cities in America is out today and can be seen by clicking here. Raleigh+Durham+Chapel Hill comes in at #17 while Charlotte hits the list at #23. Mike DeCourcy has a good essay on this year’s owner of the top spot – ‘Pittsburgh lives in you, even when you live [...]

While you get ready for today’s basketball action, here something for you to consider: A Little March Madness Can Be Good For The Workplace Along with all of this media coverage, come all of the reports of how much March Madness will cost the economy in terms of lost productivity. Distracted by office pools, tournament brackets, and [...]

Many of us grew-up listening to Skip Caray and following the Atlanta Braves from baseball’s worst franchise in the late 70s and 1980s into one of baseball’s best franchises since 1990. The voice of our generation passed away in his sleep. This post does an excellent job of highlighting various stories on the internet that may be [...]

I’m looking forward to being glued to my couch from after my business lunch on Thursday until Sunday night. Cable companies may very well be evil, but they just bought a whole hell of alot of goodwill with me! The new wrinkle this year is running all 4 HD feeds at concurrently – no more [...]

HAPPY NEW YEAR! This entry will remain posted near the top for a couple of days…so, if you are visiting the site for the first time or if you are a frequent visitor please don’t ignore all of the entries below. For example, VAWolf logged an awesome statistical post that follows this. We just wanted to take [...]

Earlier, this year, I asked a friend of mine to write a guest post outlining his perspective of the State/Carolina rivalry. Some background – he is an avid ACC historian and trivia king (rivals our own noah on those fronts), a “friend of the blog,” and the only “football first” UNC fan that I [...]

I was chatting with a UNC fan colleague yesterday, who is also a world-class ACC historian (could have a great conversation with SFN commenter noah). He has an extensive game collection, and recently acquired tape of the first State/Carolina matchup in 1984. You may remember that as the year the Wolfpack opened with [...]

With the Spring Football game approaching this weekend and with NC State’s football recruiting evolving into a very different dynamic under Tom O’Brien than we had under Chuck Amato, we thought that we would share some interesting insight from a former college football coach. (Tip of the hat to Dave Sez for linking this up a [...]

We’re spending a little time on football tonight, so it is a good time to highlight a really, really neat website that we ran across a couple of weeks ago when football recruiting was hot. Amongst a lot of other things, this hotlink to “MapGameDay.com” maps the geographical location of every high school commitment throughout the [...]

StateFansNation experienced quite a year of growth and popularity in 2006. Included in our growth was a significant amount of public recognition, most recently evidenced by our #2 finish in the ACC category in the College Football Bloggers Awards. Link to story State Fans Nation is one of the most vibrant, interactive communities on the web. Virtually every [...]

Fanblogs isn’t the only blog with multiple entries that might interest you. ACCNow continues to refine their craft and share great stuff. They’ve been following Engin Atsur’s injury very closely and today provide us some optimistic news (linked here). I don’t know if you check 0ut Fanblogs.com very often, but most of [...]

But let’s be honest, there’s not a conceivable playoff system out there that will both determine a true national champion while simultaneously filling the coffers of every BCS school (and, of course, Notre Dame). The NCAA basketball tournament is a billion-dollar three-weekend event that crowns a true national champion with unrivaled elegance and unscripted suspense. Unfortunately, there’s just no way college football could ever replicate it. But that’s ok, because the three-month regular season is college football’s billion-dollar event. Almost every Saturday along the way during these three months we the fans get a big game or two (or more, on those rare Saturdays) that means something to the standings. I’m good with that.

Tip of the hat to 850TheBuzz for highlighting this article at Rivals about the loot raked in by players at collegiate bowl games. VaWolf will love this! Awesome statistical information for football junkies. Thanks to SMQ for the work. First counterintuitive result: the most penalized teams were slightly better as a whole than the least penalized teams. Penalty yardage, over the course of an entire season, had no discernible effects on winning and losing. You can probably think of [...]

It is that time of year again!! Time to whine about college football’s bowl system and lack of playoffs! I have engaged in dozens of fantastic conversations with friends in recent years regarding the topic of a hypothetical playoff system in college football. You may be surprised to learn that in the [...]

Bill Simmons is probably one of SFN’s favorite writers. We are about the same age, grew up at the same time etc. His “13 Levels of Losing” is a MUST read for all NC State fans. That said, he jumped the gun on the Mario Williams/Reggie Bush debate like many of his friends in the media. In [...]

Let’s try to break the current tension around NC State’s football program with this departure to the parking lot of our dreams. Of course, you can probably enter the parking lot of your dreams whenever you would like as opposed to the gates of Carter-Finley Stadium.
