ACCSports.com - Wolfpack Insider Free Today

ACCSports.com/ACC Sports Journal is allowing free access to their NC State team report today.

Wilson Offers Program Hope provides a deeper look at the obvious ‘hot issue’ of the moment within the NC State Football program — the impressive emergence of quarterback, Russell Wilson.

Ever since he got knocked out against South Carolina in the season opener and got his feet wet against Clemson, Wilson has played lights-out. As strange as it may seem for someone who didn’t even lock up his own starting position until late August, Wilson even could be emerging as a favorite to be the top quarterback in the ACC when the all-conference teams are selected.

Red Means Go Contest

If you are not familiar with the Red Means Go campaign then you definitely need to read this important entry.

We wanted to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the new contest to give away a $1,000 gift card to the NC State Student Store — click here for more

Wolfpack Alum Taking National Stage

NC State graduate Robert Gibbs will be President-elect Barack Obama’s first White House press secretary. To my knowledge, he will be the first Wolfpacker to hold this position.

In other political news, the Associated Press has called North Carolina for Barack Obama. That means a great deal to me personally.

Bilas on Lowe: “They’ve Just Got To Give Him The Time”

There’s nothing like saying the same thing three or four times in the same paragraph to make a point:

Bilas: Lowe Just Needs Some Time

“But I think Sidney (Lowe) is a good coach, and I think every guy needs some time. And he hasn’t had that yet. I’ll tell you one thing, when they let Herb Sendek walk out the door and didn’t try to stop him, most people in basketball knew they were losing a really good coach and that they were going to have to take a step back to get back to where they wanted to be.”

(8pm Update) State’s First Basketball Practice Doesn’t Make Hometown Newspaper

head_up_your_ass.jpgSay What?  No Room for NC State Coverage?

Saturday’s News & Observer told the world that basketball is back in style at Duke. At Carolina, Roy Williams relishes the role as the favorite.

But, Sunday’s News and Observer somehow found room in today’s sports pages for an article about former UNC-CH quarterback Darian Durant’s play in the Canadian Football League, a 59 year old jockey winning a horse-race, and NASCAR needing to fund diversity efforts…but they couldn’t find space for the hometown major conference member’s open basketball practice that was held yesterday with the two top high school recruits in the country in attendance.

Red Means Go - Somebody Gets It!

RedMeansGo

If you’re an avid NC State fan you may have missed it.

Perhaps you walked away from the television trying to beat your head against the wall after another of Tom O’Brien’s players was injured. Or…maybe you were in the stands during our televised games this season concentrating on a return on investment analysis of your Lifetime Rights If you were in the stands maybe you were so engrossed in the game that you were watching substitution patterns instead of the drivel on the jumbotron (which probably wasn’t audible anyway with Carter-Finley’s antiquated sound system).

Lee Fowler announces new marketing ploy

In a stroke of rare sheer genius, NC State Athletics Director Lee Fowler has announced an original plan to increase apparel sales while raising excitement amoung the NCSU fan base. Contained in this official news release from Media Relations Director are the details to the plan.

AD Lee Fowler has declared a “Purple Out” for the October fourth game against ACC opponent Boston College. NCSU is declaring this “purple out” in an attempt to repair relations with their ESPN declared interstate rival as well as to increase sales of NCSU’s new purple jerseys. Fowler has stated “if it works at Georgia it will doubly work at NCSU”. In conjunction NCSU has announced their new “purple is the new red” line of apparel on sale now at the NCSU bookstore.

Holland credits NC State for allowing ECU athletics to stand on its own

Thanks, Terry!

“both of you (Lee Fowler and Dick Baddour) have been extremely cooperative in helping us in ways that have given ECU Athletics an opportunity to stand on its own”

This whole pissing match between the embarrassment that is Lee Fowler and the AD too-good-for-his-current school (Terry Holland) is too ridiculous for words.

Since our great conversation earlier in the week, the N&O updated the scheduling snafu with a link to an adobe version of the actual letter.

Our Best Pitch

The following was submitted to us by our old friend, SMD. The timing of the piece was perfect as Jerricho Cotchery was featured last night in a FANTASTIC piece on ESPN’s television show, E:60. If you didn’t see it, you need to find a replay of it and watch it. It was summed up by New York Jets Head Coach, Eric Mangini, “It’s hard to get better than Jerricho Cotchery”

Potential Mass Suicide Saturday

In an amazingly tone-deaf article, Scott Fowler wants us to rejoice in the glory of today’s football possibilities. Of course, Fowler would be expected to be blissfully ignorant of the pulse of Wolfpack nation - he’s not from the improving N&O, but rather, the dogged Tarheel fluffing Charlotte Observer. This was my newspaper growing up, and it appears to never have gotten any better. There are now two worthless Ron Greens, instead of just one. And thanks to media consolidation, I get to read their excrement again from the Raleigh suburbs.

Newsflash! Rutgers fans boo entire 2nd half (Updated Fri 10:50am)

BIG NEWS! BIG NEWS!

After booing on the kickoff of the second half of thursday’s game against North Carolina, Rutgers fans continued to boo on almost every play from scrimmage throughout the rest of the game. (Those fans that actually stayed and didn’t leave early to beat traffic)

RUTGERS!?! This is same program that was easily one of the worst programs in all of college football for decades prior to the last few years and with fans with credentials nowhere close to fans with these credentials. This is not hyperbole. This program was Duke-like in their futility. It sure doesn’t take long for fans to get ridiculously irrational with a little success.

TOB Comments on the booing; Caulton Tudor gets it right

A question about the boos in Carter Finley Stadium was bound to be asked, so Tom O’Brien had no choice but to respond last night on his weekly radio show hosted at Sullivan’s in Raleigh.

Coach Tom O’Brien talked about how annoyed he was with the fan’s reactions to Evans play on his weekly radio show.

“It’s pretty frustrating to listen to people boo thinking it’s going to make somebody better,” O’Brien said Tuesday “By booing somebody, you don’t make them better.”

O’Brien went on to talk about how the boos could be a turnoff to potential recruits who attend games.

ESPN signs 15-year, 2 Billion deal with SEC

The Southeastern Conference has signed a 15-year deal with ESPN reportedly worth more than $2 billion to televise sporting events, including football and men’s and women’s basketball.

The deal will end the SEC’s affiliation with Raycom Sports, which has aired basketball since 1986 and SEC football since 1992.

Good stuff from Ken Tysiac today

There are a couple of interesting articles from the local paper today. Coincidentally, one of yesterday’s discussions centered around the shrinking local media and specifically the CharlotteObserver/Raleigh News and Observer and NC State beat writer Ken Tysiac. Tysiac delivered a must read article on Russell Wilson and his family:

Constant incentive

Russell’s father often told him that “there is a king in every crowd.”

As explained to Russell, the quote means that there’s always somebody — God, and perhaps a coach or pro scout — watching you.

That is constant incentive to do things right.

Charlotte Observer: Miami Back in Big East (Updated @ 12:45pm)

Sunday’s print edition of The Charlotte Observer included a few pages of college football coverage. 50% of page 17C was devoted to NC State Football with three articles - two of which had been run in the N&O and on ACCNow in the days before Sunday.

The other 50% of page 17C was devoted to college football’s “National Outlook”. At the bottom of the page they had a section labeled “Big East”.

Guess the big news coming out of the “Big East” over the weekend?

University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve was told Friday that he has been suspended for the season opener against Charleston Southern….”

US News and World Report College Rankings Released

NC State is ranked #83. For the record, I think these rankings are incredibly biased against land grant universities, especially those that place heavy emphasis on science and engineering.

That said, NC State is more than 10 slots behind #71 Virginia Tech, and more than 20 slots lower than #61 Clemson. I consider these schools very comparable in geography and mission.

GoPack.com proclaims graduated quarterback will help State at receiver in 2008

We didn’t cover the re-launch of the ‘upgraded’ GoPack.com this past week despite the obvious opportunities they provided us to criticize the website for the minimal coverage that they provided NC State alumnus, Cullen Jones, after Jones was a part of one of the most significant moments of this year’s Olympic games.

GoPack’s insignificant vanilla coverage of Jones paled in comparison to coverage other college sites like Auburn gave their swimmers in Beijng. Jones represents EVERYTHING that is right with collegiate athletics and I just don’t understand why NC State would not want to do everything in their power to be married to him privately and publicly.

ESPN.com: Carter-Finley 11th Toughest Stadium In The ACC (Updated 1:45pm)

It’s almost the official middle of summertime - about six weeks past Memorial Day and about six weeks until the start of the college football season - so it is obviously a slow time where college sports are concerned.  Fall practices are still several weeks out, and it’s really too soon for the major media outlets to start covering upcoming games.  Still, it’s a 24×7 news cycle and the media needs to drive traffic in order to get paid for their ads. Lacking news, they quite often they come up with meaningless lists like ESPN.com’s “Toughest Places To Play In The ACC.”

CBS’ Billy Packer done with Final Four

CBS color analyst Billy Packer’s streak of Final Fours is over after 34 years, The Miami Herald reported Monday.

We have had a lot of entries regarding Packer in the past. You can click here for one of our more recent and more comprehensive.
