More Fun With Rankings- ACC Coaches

Here’s something to play with on a Thursday morning in August. Our favorite ESPN ACC blogger is at it again. (I suppose I’m using a “neutral” favorite there– neither a compliment nor in the perjorative.) Since we had so much fun with the stadium rankings, here is a ranking of the ACC coaches.

Now, these lists are rather subjective, but there are some things that are just common-freaking-sense. Like using a set of parameters to rank one coach (Cutcliffe) #4– FOUR! in the ACC and not applying the same standards to Paul Johnson. A few more of these, and I’ll dub Heather the Courtney Fells of bloggers– maddeningly inconsistent. Tom O’Brien is listed 6th in this list. While the positioning give or take (well, give) a spot or two is fine, some of the names above and below are curious.

College Assistants Ride Salary Wave

Remember when Chuck Amato’s initial “million dollar staff” was big news? Seems a bit modest in 2008 - see more info here.

Some familiar names on the move

Back in 2005 we did a little “Connected Coaches Webrun” that just popped into my mind when I read this quick entry from The Sporting News.

When Brandon Miller left Ohio State last spring to get experience as an assistant coach at Butler after years of working for Thad Matta in administrative positions, Matta suggested it would be wise if Miller did not buy a house in Indianapolis. Matta knew there was a good chance Buckeyes associate head coach John Groce would be moving on to run his own program, and last month he got the job at Ohio U. Matta wasted little time inviting Miller to rejoin the Buckeyes staff, this time as an assistant coach. Archie Miller, brought in a year ago from Arizona State, will become Ohio State’s lead assistant. . . .

Some Spurrier Stuff (Updated 7/21)

SS

If you have an interest in Steve Spurrier - the man who doesn’t want to hear clapping after losses - then you will most definitely appreciate this link from the SFN archives. Not only is there a lot in the entry but the comments section provides some interesting articles and comments. (Update: This entry was subsequently removed by the author)

Additionally, the ACC-SEC Blog also put together an entry on Friday focused on the AJC’s recent article surrounding the rumors of how long Spurrier will be coaching in Columbia. That entry can be seen by clicking here.

BBall: 2008 One-and-Doners and more

An awesome analysis of 2008’s One-And-Doners can be seen by clicking here to one of the best college basketball blogs in the country.

I can’t copy and paste their comments, but they have some interesting things to say about NC State and how JJ Hickson was definitely ‘not worth it’. It really is an interesting piece.

You can surf to “Rush the Court” and a host of other blogs and resources by spending some time looking at our blogroll on the right hand side of our front page.

Another Valvano Player Hired as NBA Coach

Vinny D

Add former Wolfpacker Vinny Del Negro to the list of Jim Valvano’s former players who have made a big splash in basketball years after their playing careers ended.

Multiple media reports indicate that Del Negro is set to become the Head Coach of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls.

The deal isn’t complete, but sources said Del Negro will sign a two-year contract with a team option for a third season and be paid roughly $2 million annually. That will make him one of the league’s lowest-paid coaches.

TAMU: Mike Sherman (Updated 7/4)

May 8, 2008

He inherits a program with a struggling recent history. Since winning back-to-back South Division titles in 1997-98 under Slocum and earning a three-way tie for the second place in 1999, the Aggies have finished no higher than third in the South since then. And since Sherman left A&M after the 1996 season, the Aggies have lost seven of their past eight bowl games.

ESPN ran an article about Texas A&M’s new Head Coach Mike Sherman last week that I found interesting and decided to share.

Mark Phelps Hired at Drake

Congratulations to former NC State assistant coach, Mark Phelps who was named as Keno Davis’ replacement at Drake today. (Link to article)

Talk about timely!? Just last week we ran this entry where Phelps was prominently featured.

Related to our aforelinked entry will be the interesting topic of who Herb Sendek hires to replace Phelps at Arizona State.

Capel & Haith Rumors Swirl Around Columbia

We haven’t spent much time talking about the coaching carousel this off-season so we decided to open this entry for our readers to share things that they are seeing and hearing in the marketplace and to link interesting articles, blog posts, and internet ramblings.

Our neighbors to the South - whom we should play every year in basketball as some form of a ‘tradition’ game - seem to be talking most seriously about Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Miami’s Frank Haith.

“Now I know why Tigers eat their Young”

There could, and maybe should have been an open thread just on fond rememberances of the ‘83 Championship team running non-stop all night. 25 years, could it really have happened that long ago? RR was in office and I was six years old and occasionally glancing the rim with my jump shot. In short, it would be good for me as a Wolfpack fan to absorb some of the magic that transpired here a quarter century ago.

Bowden’s Buyout Structure

With the annual talk of Clemson fans’ disappoiintment with Tommy Bowden — and our Athletics Director thinks OUR fans are difficult? — I am estimating that there will come a time in the future when the information and facts information included here will be of value to a conversation that you may have. So, I just thought that we would post this today for archives.

(Speaking of archives, have you checked out our new archives and the use of “tags” that is accessible by clicking on the archives tab in the top banner?)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This entry will remain posted near the top for a couple of days…so, if you are visiting the site for the first time or if you are a frequent visitor please don’t ignore all of the entries below. For example, VAWolf logged an awesome statistical post that follows this.

We just wanted to take a moment to draw your attention to the newest edition of the NC State Alumni Magazine that hit most homes over the last week. Starting on page 36 and ending on page 45 you will see that the magazine printed a series of articles on the impact of the internet at NC State and on the NC State community. We’d like to thank the NC State Alumni Magazine for the attention and prominence that they applied to StateFansNation in the feature piece.

Former NC State/WVU Player Sean Berton Weighs In On Rich Rodriguez

Sean Berton, who transfered to NC State after Rich Rodriquez was hired at WV, gave his take on Rodriguez in a message board post on Scout.com

Good Read: Why Rich Rodriguez Left WVU

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Before the death threats to his brother’s children, before the letters to the editor that rage against him in his local paper, before the destruction of his mailbox, and the printing of anti-Rod T-shirts, and the affixing of mocking posters to his gate at the end of his driveway, Rich Rodriguez was the most popular man in West Virginia.

More ‘Silly Speculation’

For some backgroun on this headline, you should probably check out the comments in this entry .

Today, CBS Sportsline is discussing the West Virginia job with a Dennis Dodd vs Greg Doyel model.

Look who’s name popped up two days after we threw it out.

Damn silly speculation

Pat Forde Rips Bobby Petrino A New one

In the coming days and weeks, the disingenuous drifter will say what Arkansas fans want to hear.

Pug Suey! Arkansas Pulls a Coup

Everyone who laughed at Arkansas’ coaching search may want to chime in with something here as it looks like the Razorbacks have landed the Atlanta Falcons’ Bobby Petrino.

Bobby Petrino resigned as Atlanta Falcons coach on Tuesday, the team said. He lasted only 13 games with the NFL team.

Sources have told Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com that Petrino will be taking the head coaching job at the University of Arkansas.

Man, those folks in Auburn are going to be jealous.

Paul Johnson to Georgia Tech is a ‘done deal’

Of course, nothing is a done deal in today’s crazy coaches market. But, the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting:

Navy coach Paul Johnson has an agreement in principle to become the next head football coach at Georgia Tech, two people close to the hiring process told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Friday morning. But as has been the case during this crazy season of the coaching carousel, it is not a done deal until Johnson’s name is on the dotted line.

Friday Bytes

Some quick bytes of current news:

* Last night was good to the Wolfpack basketball team. South Carolina squeaked out a victory over Providence and Villanova mounted an awesome comeback to beat LSU. I watched some of the Nova-LSU game and was fascinated on the impact that good officiating had on LSU’s ability to build a big lead. I’m more convinced that our game with Nova would have produced a margin of victory of ten or more points if we had decent officials.
