UNC ticket sales “tepid” for game at Maryland(updated by Thursday 5:30 pm))

Updated:

Since some UNC fans were wondering why the UNC ticket office informed them that the UNC allotment had been sold out, I wanted to provide the updated from the author at the Washington Times:

All—

I just sent this in an e-mail to a curious Carolina fans, but figured I’d toss it out here as well:

Just heard back from Maryland officials, and here’s apparently what happened:

Maryland offers visiting schools 4,000 tickets. A school can accept whatever number of tickets it wants. North Carolina apparently only took 1,100-1,200 a month or so ago and declined the rest, which went back into the pool of available tickets to the general public.

NC State News - 11/12 (updated with football game article)

-Wake game story from Winston-Salem Journal

“I would be surprised if our guys see North Carolina State as anything but a really good football team in the ACC — and you’d better go play if you’re going to win,” Grobe said yesterday. “I don’t think it’s going to be the trap game in the sense that we overlook them because we know how talented they are.

“The good thing about being at Wake Forest is guys are pretty smart. I don’t think we’ll go to Raleigh expecting anything but a battle and know we’ll be fortunate to come away from there with a win.”

ACC Sports Journal: Wolfpack Failed to Fix Line With 2005 Class

Recently the ACC Sports Journal completed major changes to their website and the layout of their print edition. For anyone interested, they are offering a free 30 day trial to their website. You can register by going here:

Free 30 day Trial

One cool feature non-subscribers can use on their website is the “Daily Links” page. They provide articles from around the ACC market for each team in the conference. Having been on the internet following ACC sports since 1996~, I think this type of “web run” was actually originated by the creators of this blog. We mentioned The Wolfpack Wire recently who also does something similar.

John Wall to visit Duke this week

A couple of days after we told you that Duke was going to make a big push for John Wall…

John Wall, the No. 1 basketball recruit in the nation, will likely take an unofficial visit to Duke later this week, possibly when the Blue Devils play Lenoir-Rhyne in an exhibition Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 Wall showed some interest in Duke this past summer and the coaching staff recently reached out to the people in his inner circle. Duke pulled his transcripts and was pleasantly surprised.

Was Duke’s staff not expecting John to have good grades?

Next year’s 12th football game

At the risk of over-stating the obvious - next year is a very important year for the NC State Football program and every single leader with any type of influence over the direction of the football program. Unless the Wolfpack can string together four consecutive wins to close out the 2008 season, the program is heading for a 4th losing season in the last five years - all under the ‘leadership’ of Athletics Director, Lee Fowler.

To offer some historical perspective on this - NC State has experienced four losing seasons in a five year period only three times since the formation of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953..

Kansas State should be ashamed

kstate-cash.jpgThat would be Wildcats assistant Dalonte Hill, Beasley’s former AAU coach in the Washington, D.C., area. Hill, entering his sixth season as a college assistant, will make more money for the 2008-09 season than the entire three-man staffs at Ohio State, Washington State and Wisconsin and only $5,000 less than the staff at Texas, a survey done by Rivals.com shows.K-State released Hill’s contract in May. The school paid him $400,000 in 2007-08, and it will pay him $420,000 a year – $150,000 in base salary and $270,000 in “additional compensation,” defined as “television, radio, internet, promotional and other services” – for the next four years. He is entering his third year at K-State.Because private universities are not required to release salary information, it’s unknown whether Hill is the highest-paid assistant in college basketball. But based on Freedom of Information requests, Hill is far and away the highest-paid assistant among public universities that finished in the top 15 in the 2008 coaches’ postseason poll. Rivals.com obtained the contracts and/or salary figures for the assistants at all 10 public schools that finished in the top 15, as well as the contracts and salary figures for the assistants at Florida and Ohio State (because along with Texas they have two of the largest athletic budgets in the country) and Kentucky (because of its status as a traditional basketball power).

Bowden & Spence out at Clemson [8th Update, 12:00 pm]

Be sure to look below to read the updates to the story as they happen…

Tommy Bowden has been relieved of his duties as Clemson’s head football coach, effective immediately, Tigerillustrated.com has learned. Bowden told assistant coaches moments ago in a staff meeting.

We talked about this in detail on Friday in a comprehensive entry that includes a great list of potential candidates for replacement.

Tarantini gaffe costs soccer team ACC victory (updated Wed am)

The NC State soccer team has forfeited their only ACC victory this season over Boston College because they used an ineligible player. The information was out last week, however there is no explanation to be found on the NC State official website. The game story still has us winning, but the game has been changed on the schedule to reflect a 0-1 loss. The Technician coincidentally has a story today explaining the situation with quotes from Head Coach George Tarantini:

It is certainly something we have never faced before,” Tarantini said. “We discussed the situation right away.”

WRAL: NC State and ECU play three times from 2010-16

Several gems in this article, so make sure to read the whole thing. The following is really interesting:

“We play them in ‘10, ‘13, and ‘16, and we haven’t scheduled any further out than that,” said (Lee) Fowler. “We had more games over those six years and I think Skip (Holtz) and Terry (Holland) got together and said, ‘We’ve got to make sure we can win and do some things properly’, so I think they wanted to back off every other year or every year, home and away”

There are a few FACTS that you should know:

Tudor: NC State has most loyal fan base in NC

This may shock people, but some members of the media are starting to understand the frustrations of NC State’s supporters. On a morning where the Wall Street Journal did a feature on Bobby Purcell and the incredible fundraising efforts of NC State supporters, Caulton Tudor proves again (as he did last week) that he really has a grasp on NC State athletics:

N.C. State fans are grumbling, and they have a right to.

Various segments of the Wolfpack World are upset with football coach Tom O’Brien, basketball coach Sidney Lowe and/or athletics director Lee Fowler.

The Don of Donations (must read)

Out of all fundraisers in college athletics, the Wall Street Journal chose our very own Bobby Purcell to feature in this article. Some may be surprised that there wasn’t a single mention of Lee Fowler and others probably wonder how Bobby can raise so much money since NC State has such “bad” fans. Maybe the only person left out that deserves some credit for the flood of donations and record levels of attendance at football and basketball games is former football coach Chuck Amato (who at the same time deserves a lot credit for the current state of the football program).

NC State down to 46 scholarship players not counting kickers

This column has been provided by a guest author Todd Lion.

After viewing the post yesterday describing NC State’s injury woes and last week’s entry discussing the high rate of attrition from Amato’s last two classes, I thought it would be worth it to examine who is available to play instead of focusing on those not available to play. From my latest examination of the GoPack.com roster, the Wolfpack has 73 players on scholarship this season.

Let us begin this examination by eliminating those players who are currently unavailable to play in the ECU game due to injury.

Gameday Clemson

This is a bit odd being home on a Saturday not preparing for a long day of tailgating. At least there are a lot of quality games on television today.

It has been a while since I have felt good about our chances going into game against a quality, deep, athletic team like Clemson. With the spread earlier in the week at Clemson -18.5, it should be obvious to everyone that a Pack victory today would be a major, major upset. The Pack’s schedule won’t get any easier with #14 ECU coming to Raleigh next week followed by a game against #19 South Florida. South Florida had an impressive win against a ranked Kansas team last night.

The Natives are Restless in Blacksburg

Apparently it isn’t just NC State fans who dare to question the leaders of their athletic department.

While NC State’s athletics department has struggled as one of the ACC’s worst overall programs during the last decade, our fans have responded by supporting NC State at record levels.

Conversely, Virginia Tech has actually been one of the success stories in the Atlantic Coast Conference the past several years. Their athletics department finished #37 in last year’s Sears Director Cup standings, an ALL-TIME high for the Hokies!

TOB Comments on the booing; Caulton Tudor gets it right

A question about the boos in Carter Finley Stadium was bound to be asked, so Tom O’Brien had no choice but to respond last night on his weekly radio show hosted at Sullivan’s in Raleigh.

Coach Tom O’Brien talked about how annoyed he was with the fan’s reactions to Evans play on his weekly radio show.

“It’s pretty frustrating to listen to people boo thinking it’s going to make somebody better,” O’Brien said Tuesday “By booing somebody, you don’t make them better.”

O’Brien went on to talk about how the boos could be a turnoff to potential recruits who attend games.

41% attrition rate from 2005 & 2006 classes

Here is a good article from Rob Daniels of the Greensboro News & Record that provides some statistical insight into what we all know and are feeling - NC State’s football program is depleted of depth and currently undergoing a major rebuilding project.

Hopefully our fans have begun to realize that we are in a total rebuild mode and potentially several years behind other schools who made coaching changes at the same time we hired TOB.

Lowe comments on trip to Toronto

Gopack.com’s Tim Peeler posted a very good interview of Sidney Lowe after the basketball team’s trip to Toronto for two exhibition games this past weekend. As you might expect, there were no questions or comments about Ben McCauley not being allowed to make the trip with the team.

GoPack.com: Is it safe to say you are pretty energized by what you saw?

Beamer taking redshirt off Taylor; TOB keeping redshirt on our Glennon (updated 3:04 pm)

Frank Beamer’s decision to redshirt Tyrod Taylor instead of going with the two quarterback system that was successful last season didn’t last long. At his press conference today, Beamer announced that both Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor will get snaps going forward.

Following Saturday’s upset loss to East Carolina, Beamer announced at his Tuesday news conference that Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor will both see time at quarterback from here on out.

Beamer would not say who would start Saturday’s home opener against Furman or how he will use either quarterback.

Alabama players driving Escalades?

– Defensive coordinator Vic Koenning (Clemson) raised some eyebrows when asked a general question about Alabama receiver Julio Jones. Koenning has a lot of ties in south Alabama, and that’s where Jones is from.

Koenning’s response:

“I actually ran into Julio in the spring recruiting. I said hello to him. I said, ‘Well, I guess I’ll be seeing you at the end of August.’ And then he got out and got in his Escalade and drove off. That’s serious. And then I went over and watched (Alabama freshman) Burton Scott at Vigor High School at the track over there, and Burton Scott was running around. He went and got in his Escalade out at track practice and drove off. So I’m familiar with those two guys.”

Good stuff from Ken Tysiac today

There are a couple of interesting articles from the local paper today. Coincidentally, one of yesterday’s discussions centered around the shrinking local media and specifically the CharlotteObserver/Raleigh News and Observer and NC State beat writer Ken Tysiac. Tysiac delivered a must read article on Russell Wilson and his family:

Constant incentive

Russell’s father often told him that “there is a king in every crowd.”

As explained to Russell, the quote means that there’s always somebody — God, and perhaps a coach or pro scout — watching you.

That is constant incentive to do things right.
