Jim Chaney interviewing at NC State?

FootballRumorMill.com tweeted this afternoon

Jim Chaney is currently the Offensive Coordinator and interim Head Coach at the University of Tennessee – where the Volunteers offense has exhibited little problem scoring points in recent years (including this season). At this point, one can only presume that Chaney is interviewing for a similar role as offensive coordinator in Raleigh?

Chaney has run the spread in the past and actually coached Drew Brees in college. Additionally, Tennessee has traditionally recruited the western part of North Carolina exceptionally well. I don’t know what role Chaney may have played in that, but his familiarity and reputation from Tennessee certainly can’t hurt.

You can click here for his UT bio.

Chaney, 49, arrived in Knoxville in 2009 from the NFL ranks, having spent the three previous seasons as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Rams. The majority of Chaney’s coaching experience, however, comes from the collegiate ranks. His coaching and recruiting turns at Purdue, Wyoming and Cal State Fullerton made him the perfect fit for Tennessee.

Chaney spent all three years in St. Louis coaching the offensive line before adding tight ends to his assignment sheet in 2008. During the 2007 campaign, Chaney helped coach an offensive line that led running back Steven Jackson to his third consecutive 1,000-yard season.

Possessing one of college football’s best offensive minds, Chaney helped the Boilermakers lead the Big Ten in passing offense five times and total offense three.

Purdue was ranked in the top 10 in the nation in total offense in six seasons, including 2000, when the Boilermakers ranked fourth.

Chaney served as the offensive coordinator at Purdue from 1997-2005.

Quarterback Drew Brees, a second-round draft pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2001, was the NCAA total offense champion in 2000, averaging 349.1 yards per game, and received the Maxwell Award as the nation’s outstanding player. Tim Stratton received the inaugural John Mackey Award as the nation’s best tight end in 2000.

More importantly, the 2000 combination of Chaney and Brees under head coach Joe Tiller led Purdue to its first Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl berth in 33 years.

From 1997-2001, Chaney served as recruiting coordinator and helped the Boilermakers sign some of the country’s top high school talent. The 1998 class was ranked second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. Each of Chaney’s last five classes was in the top 30 nationally.

Before his Purdue tenure, Chaney was offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Wyoming in 1995 and 1996. He joined the Cowboys in 1993 as a graduate assistant, working with the tight ends and recruiting.

Chaney broke into coaching at Cal State Fullerton in 1985. He served in many areas, including offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator as well as coaching all offensive positions. Chaney had a stint as the offensive line coach at Western Michigan during the spring of 1988 before returning to Cal State Fullerton.

A native of Holden, Mo., Chaney earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Central Missouri State University in 1985 after a career at nose guard. He earned All-Conference honors as a senior.

Great pickup if we can get him! Wonder how much influence/help DY is giving DD in finding his staff? One can only presume she liked what UT did on offense against us in Atlanta.

Impressive bio-wonder where Chaney fit on DD’s 5-deep roster of OC’s…

Well, he wrote himself a nice bio … that’s a start.

If true, that could be a very good hire.

No way dude keep Bible he’s got a good heart.

  7. mak4dpak 12/06/2012 at 8:49 PM #

Can’t believe he didn’t choose to keep Dana Bible, and his expertise as an OC. Coach has already disappointed me. Seriously I am jokin, and had he been retained, I would be worried. He and Archer are not keepers. Things continue to look even more promising.

Chaney dismantled our defense pretty easily. Not that it’s saying much. If we can’t stop him, hire him.

^ We followed that same philosophy in hiring a certain coach from Furman in 1985. As I recall, that worked out pretty well for us. One thing I’ll say about UT’s offense this year – it was the ONLY thing that worked for them. Given that, I’m just as disappointed in our losing to them as in any of our other losses. SEC team be damned.

So just wanted to point out to those who stir up these rumors of more teams leaving the ACC, you were wrong. All the presidents of every school in the ACC, even the new comers signed a letter stating they had no intentions of leaving the ACC. Again, the Maryland issue was a financial thing, and nothing on the conference. Go ACC!

  11. packbackr04 12/07/2012 at 8:31 AM #

mak^ dont forget the Big East Presidents also wrote the exact same letter promising their solidarity to the Big East in September 2011…. howd that work out for them?

  12. sundropdrinker13 12/07/2012 at 8:31 AM #

mak4dpak, if you really believe that that signed letter really means something, then you are a fool. History teaches that once something like this happens, all hell breaks out not long after. Could be a couple years, but it will still happen.

  13. packbackr04 12/07/2012 at 8:36 AM #

and when the next ACC team leaves… it will also be about the money and nothing on the conference as you put it… its always all about the money.

  14. YogiNC 12/07/2012 at 8:50 AM #

^Keep that thought, we’ll get back to you later on it.

“…if the ACC CEOs really thought they were solid, why do they have a $50 million exit fee…” (http://cbsprt.co/SDaS2J)

mak4dpak – i have a nice piece of beach front property in Nebraska that you can buy really cheap.

That statement means nothing. Just like all the coaches who get public statement of support then are fired the next week.

    $ speaks louder than words

Back on topic, if this is the hire, then I think it is a good one. I remember those Purdue teams and they could really score points (and it wasn’t just because of Brees). Heck, when Brees came out, he was considered a system QB.

Tennessee put up 30+ in 9 games this year. The only times they didn’t were 13 against Alabama, 20 against Florida and 18 against Vandy (WTF?). I was impressed by their offense against us (not just the talent, but how they exposed us).

Also, Purdue is a pretty tough place to recruit. I remembered them having some good talent — at least on the offensive side of the ball — during that era. If he also recruited well at UT (and particularly in Western NC), then this could be a good fit. Give us a staff full of recruiters who are also good at X’s and O’s and we’ll have something.

  18. Texpack 12/07/2012 at 11:12 AM #

Wyoming and Purdue would make him a Joe Tiller disciple IIRC.

  19. surfingwolf 12/07/2012 at 12:30 PM #

If we hire him… I want him to bring those storm trooper helmets with him. That juco xfer receiver that ate us up looked badass in that storm trooper helmet.

I like the hiring of young, energetic guys with quality experience to boot.

I’ve said all along that we would be well-served tapping the midwest all the way to the foothills of the rockies for lineman. Nebraska, for instance, always seems to have a quality lines. We would probably benefit from their leftovers.

    mak4dpak,

I have some beautiful ocean front property for sale, it’s adjacent to Umstead Park, you interested? I’ll even throw in one of the bridges. 🙂

Mizzou is also rumored to be after Chaney

  24. saigonwolf 12/07/2012 at 8:26 PM #

I’m gonna let mak4dpak off the hook and say he was being facetious and just punking us – right mak?

  25. mak4dpak 12/08/2012 at 6:06 AM #

We shall see. I for one don’t see it happening. Perhaps some of you want it to happen, but I like it like it is, and happy with ACC, and its latest additions. Again Maryland had shut down alot of its athletic programs d/t financial strains, and were looking to find a way to restore them. Not facetious, or punking. When I see it happen, I will believe it, but nothing in the near future. I do recall a GT rumor on here that was suppose to take place after the ACC championship game. I have heard nothing on that one, and what’s with the name calling? Really? Again we shall see! As for the new DC, I hope he will be an asset to Deoren’s staff, and perhaps Chaney too, will join the staff, as OC.
