We’re going to take a quick look at what people are saying about NC State’s hiring of Dave Doeren. But, nothing is as important as what our recruits are already saying and how our current players are reacting.

For Boston College, this eliminates one of the prime MAC coaching candidates from the Eagles’ wish list. May we see a rematch of the 2012 MAC Championship Game coaching match-up as an ACC Atlantic Division showdown in 2013?

A gregarious 40-year-old, Doeren obviously is a stark contrast to the reserved, stately O’Brien, a 64-year-old former Marine major. He will give the football a younger look and likely bring in some Mid-American Conference coaching tactics with which ACC coaches are unfamiliar.
It’s a certainty that Wolfpack fans will rally behind him even though most of those fans were expecting a new coach from almost anywhere except DeKalb, Ill.
But can Doeren put together a staff capable of recruiting the South? He’s Midwest to the bone, has an offensive coordinator (Mike Dunbar) who is about to turn 64 and a highly respected quarterback coach (Bob Cole) who might get promoted to the head chair.

Is it possible that the south can be recruited any worse than it had been the last few years?
I only care about doing things the right way. I miss O’Brien already no one lost games as right as he did.

Wtf does that even mean?
A friend of mine (Florida grad) and I were talking about NC State’s opening last Monday. He was asking if I thought it was a good idea for us to be in “market” with other big SEC schools out there.
My comment was:
1) We can’t build our program worrying about what others are doing
2) It was not a surprise to anyone inside of NC State (I said UVA game was tipping point) so pretty sure we have been working this for couple weeks now
3) The other “big” schools are out chasing rainbows (Gruden, Miles, etc) so as long as we act fast, decisively we will get our guy before they have to result to plan B
Sorry, AW. Should have paused for a moment to think. Didn’t realize Dykes didn’t want us but guess it should have dawned on me when we didn’t announce soon after the interview.
It is ok that Dykes did not want us, I did not want him. DD is a better hire.
From all indications, it wasn’t that Dykes didn’t want us, it was that Dykes was the backup plan.
Doeren was Yow’s #1 choice all along. She just had to wait until after the MAC championship to pull the trigger.
The work with Dykes, Morris, etc. was contingency work.

I was hoping for a bigger name, but glad DY got her number one. According to Fringe, he was in charge of Florida recruiting for Wisconsin. Looked at WI rooster has several players from FL. If he can bring in skilled player from FL, win NC, and keep pipeline open in GA. The future looks bright!
Seems like we’ve been on a swinging pendulum with the personalities of our coaches going from thoughtful and humble Mike O’Cain to the outspoken and brash Chuck Amato then all the way over to the stern and silent Tom O’Brien. I think Dave Doeren is right in the middle – confident, but not cocky; a disciplianarian who loves his team; a man who is steafast and energetic. He is more open that Sheridan and not quite the showman of Lou Holtz or Monte Kiffen. I think, perhaps, he is a lot like Bo Rein – I just hope he stays longer than three years.

Read WTNY comment above- believe it or not- from all aspects this Coaching hire should serve as a template for how all revenue sports hires are handled.
WTNY, you’re more correct than I. Dykes was/is still holding out for best option (money?).
For all his accomplishments, I think I’m most impressed by the comments of the NIU players.
Contrast that with comments from players in programs that Edsell and Petrino had just left.
I remember when NCSU hired another new head coach with only 2 years prior head coaching experience, in a lower level conference. That coach was named Lou Holtz. We should be so lucky again!

If you listen to the audio version or read the book, “Lifetime Contract….”, Coach V “knew” that he and Pam and family would be moving. He beat Louisville in the 9:00 or Premier game in the Garden. He had actually conned Sonny Werblin into letting them have two 9:00 games. On a side note, it is really fitting and ironic that we play in the 9:00 game in the Jimmy V. Classic in the Garden tomorrow night.
Anyway, after beating Louisville (who was the NCAA Champion after that loss) and his record at Iona, he KNEW that folks would be calling.
The ACC was his “Destination” job. He did his homework….Coach Doeren did his. Coach Doeren does not have the swagger or flair of Jimmy V….BUT, he has that quite and subtle quality of a true leader. Folks will be attracted to him and he will do well here.
There are only a few people that I have ever met that had “IT”. IT is the personality that tells you that whatever profession they chose, they would be successful and eventually be one of the “best” in the country. Jimmy V. had it. Coach Doeren seems to have it.
Whether fate interceeded or whether Debbie Yow got a gift or whether she had this thing all planned out, you gotta give her a big “WAY TO GO”.
