NC State is 17-0 all-time in meetings with UNC-Asheville. The last time the two schools met was last year’s season opener in Raleigh with the Pack posting an 84-75 victory in Coach Mark Gottfried’s first game as head coach of the Wolfpack. NC State is 77-9 all-time against Big South foes.
From GoPack - “Both teams enter Friday’s game looking to get back on the winning track after each experienced losses at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. NC State fell to Oklahoma State, 76-56, in the championship game of the event, while UNC Asheville is trying to stop a four-game slide. The Bulldogs suffered losses to Tennessee (75-68), Akron (82-63) and Providence (72-67) in Puerto Rico. Their streak began with a loss to UNC Wilmington, 67-59, in its second game of the season.
Eddie Biedenbach is in his 18th season as head coach of the Bulldogs, but he is a familiar face around NC State’s campus. As an NC State player from 1964-69, the native of Pittsburgh owns the distinction of being the only player in school history to be coached by Everett Case, Press Maravich and Norm Sloan. The wily guard, known as the “Pittsburgh Pirate” because of his defensive abilities, earned AllACC honors in his junior season of 1966 and his senior season of ’68, leading the team in scoring both years. In between, he sat out with a back injury.
After his playing career, Biedenbach became a Wolfpack assistant under Sloan and was responsible for recruiting some of the greatest players in school history, including Tommy Burleson, David Thompson, Kenny Carr and Charles “Hawkeye” Whitney. Biedenbach, who spent three seasons as the head coach at Davidson, returned to NC State as an assistant under Les Robinson, spending three years in Raleigh before being named head coach of the Bulldogs prior to the 1996-97 season.

I remember him well from my days at Norm Sloan’s basketball camp.
I’ve have talked to Eddie several times while in Asheville. A nice guy and he still keeps up with the latest on State. He has had some good teams while at UNCA (my second favorite UNC system school) and some bad luck when his 7’6″ center (Kenny George) got that foot infection. Kenny was a real nice guy and didn’t deserve that. I wish Eddie the best of luck (except when he plays State).
I went over to the Winthrop Coliseum a few years back to watch Kenny play for Eddie against Greg Marshall in the Big South Tournament.
Jeez, he was a big dude! I was really sorry to hear about the foot issue..but wasn’t it both feet? I could be wrong, but thought I read that.

At the game now and it is halftime. We are not playing well. If Gott cannot turn THIS game around, we are in deep trouble.
Why the hell aren’t we dribble penetrating? It’s the only way to beat the zone. Purvis and zo can get to the rim at will, and yet we pass the ball around the perimeter untill we turn it over. Disgusting.
I hate to admit it, but I’m not impressed with the team so far. I hope they get their heads together, or OkState is going to beat them twice

So much for being a final four caliber team… Making the tournament will be nice at this rate, as there are two more definite Ls on the horizon if this is who they are.
Turnovers, missed free throws, and terrible D. When you know who their scorers are and they still go off, you’ve got serious problems. Tim Jr. may score 50 against this team. Man… I was alright with Ok State loss, but this is devastating.

Hard to believe we only had 19 turnovers. Thank god for the freshman, without that run with those 3 on the floor at once, we would be looking at two losses in a row.
Thank goodness for Howell. He was clutch in the second half.
I hate to say it, but the book is out on how to beat us. If a team turns it into a possession game, plays a box and one, with the one on Wood and packs that zone in, we won’t beat them. We don’t play defense well enough to win in a possession battle (which doesn’t bode well for any game against a good team) and Wood’s the only person we really have who can really shoot. Warren and Purvis can make them, but the scouting report has to be to lay off of them on the perimeter.
After the OK State loss, I expected our team to come out against UNCA and make a statement. Well, they certainly made a statement tonight. Too many turnovers, poor free throw shooting, poor defense, etc. Keep in mind this was a HOME GAME AGAINST UNCA – let that sink in for a moment. We have MAJOR work to do before conference play begins. Fortunately for us, the problem is mental and it is our coach who can (and I believe will) get our team mentally focused. Win or lose, I do not expect to see this poor effort (exclude Howell) at the Michigan or CT games. Did you hear Gott’s comments after the game? To paraphrase, ‘we will begin to work on our problems beginning Sunday at practice.’ I suspect Sunday practice will be brutal – as it should be.
