State down three starting offensive linemen for FSU
The NC State injury news just took an awful turn as it has been announced that starting offensive guard, Zach Allen is out for the season with a foot injury that will require surgery.
Allen joins defensive tackle, Jacob Kahut (knee) and linebacker Michael Peek (knee) as players that are out for the entire season.
For Florida State however, State’s offense will also be missing three other starters, including two key offensive linemen – Robert Crisp and Andrew Wallace.
Make no mistake about the significance of these injuries on NC State’s football program – not just this one game. Coach Tom O’Brien’s seat is getting hotter by the week, and the fact that his program does not appear to contain enough talented depth to help weather injuries does not bode necessarily well for a bright future.
Our fans recognize the strength of visiting Florida State to the point of having a great conversation analyzing the Seminoles’ National Championship hopes.

Another foot injury? You have got to be kidding me!!!
Line jumped to 16. Ouch.
Start drinking early
Wolfbuff, how about now?
same story year after year—no depth.
A blowout loss might mean the end of the TOB era, or at the very least, the beginning of a major shift in attitude towards him from the fans.
I know that I am going to the game expecting a huge loss and will tailgate having already made peace with it.
We were just a “foot” away this year. And a tailbone.
No way the rest of the D1 schools combined lose as many STARTERS for the YEAR to foot injuries. No friggin’ way.
Alpha is probably right. Maybe it would have made it closer but it just wouldn’t have mattered in the end.
Heard this talk this time last year on this site. Don’t think after the money and promotion of Jon Tenuta that TOB’s seat will get hot this year.
I don’t buy the “TOB-on-the-hot-seat” talk either. DY just gave Gott and Co a whopper (not the sandwich) of a raise. TOB’s on contract till Dec 2013. No way in hell his contract is eaten. Unless TOB and Co lose every game from here on out, no way that happens.
The injuries show how deep we are or rather how shallow we are regarding talent.
Two things. Look at FSU’s injury report compared to ours and they are ranked #3 in the country. Also, TOB’s seat it already getting warm and he is very aware of this.
TOB is reaping the results of his poor recruiting — no talented depth. After 6 years of crappy coaching and recruiting we can expect more of the same—crap. Please send this guy packing sap. He retired 6 years ago.
rtpack24 is correct (as usual).
You guys don’t have to ‘buy’ the hot seat if you don’t want.
But, I’m telling you that TOB was given very clear expectations heading into the season and we are currently not on track to deliver those expectations.
We’re fine with money. Heck, it doesn’t get much better than the opportunity to buy out just one remaining year of a contract.
His seat is warming… and everyone who needs to know knows it
Dudes not fair the dude wasn’t done chopping wood.
I think he’s here one more year, names Tenuta DC and sends Archer packing. Should have done this two years ago.
So TOB’s contract is only through the end of next season? Isn’t the norm to have a 4+ year contract, most of the time with an annual rollover? Seems that could be used by opposing coaches as a negative tactic on the recruiting trail… just curious if that’s the case.
I don’t really care how many OL we are down. The story gets old after 6 years. I don’t know if it is my advanced years or what, but I don’t read all the recruiting stuff or TOB comments any more. It is like GroundHog Day all over again. We keep recruiting the same level of players. We keep the same pathetic coaches and run the most predictable offensive scheme in the country and wonder why we can barely compete in our conference.
I think any economic analysis shows that letting a poor coach hangon is much more expensive to a program than going ahead and buying the staff out. Once the cards are in and the program is either continues to slide or go nowhere, it is time for a change.
I like TOB as a person and I like the clean program he has run. But, I think there are many young innovative coaches than can also run a clean program, recruit much better, and have the potential for a much higher level of success.
I really don’t understand the drive by some of our fans here to get rid of TOB. We are a program that goes to bowls, wins bowls, consistently beats our hated rival and somehow that’s not good enough. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m disappointed that we are not undefeated at this point in the season when this was supposed to be our year. I’m still hopeful and confident that T0B will hold true to form and come on strong as the season progresses. Everyone should realize that we are not LSU or Alabama and neither is anyone else in college football. We are however a team that continues to trend upward and this weekends game will tell us a lot about where we stand in the pecking order. As long as we have winning seasons, win bowl games and beat the heels I’ll support TOB. If however he pulls an Amato and closes a season with 7 straight losses………I’ll help him pack.
Personally I think its time to play some new guys on the OL. If it took some injuries to force this then so be it. The older guys werent getting it done.
“We are however a team that continues to trend upward”
Interesting perspective. I don’t feel like this season is part of an upward trend. Is that what you are saying?
At this point in time, I’m expecting 5-6 losses this year, which will be a clear step backwards. Then we are set to lose our QB, most of our OL, and most of our secondary. Which would lead me to expect 5-7 losses next year, and probably the year after.
Meanwhile, TOB seems likely to retire within the next 3-5 years if he isn’t fired.
Combining these factors, IMO it’s a good time to bring in a new coach after this season.
Heck, even if we had a miracle turnaround and won every game the rest of the season, won the ACC, and won a BCS bowl game, I think TOB would then retire after the season. So we’d still need a new coach.
It’s time.
Tau837, its still early in the season. We have two losses on the road to two decent teams. We may lose our third Saturday night. If we do that’s still only 3 losses and the meat of the schedule is behind us. But what if we win against FSU? As far as next year goes I really like the look of next years team. Take a closer look at where we’re weak this year and what we have coming back in the younger players. It may not be such a bad thing to replace most of the Oline and secondary.
Basketball starts soon!
So after TOB who’s next? Will we get Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban? Yeah, right. We will just get some no name coach and pray that he can be successful. I’m not saying a change is not necessary, but our expectations may be a bit high. NCSU football is just not very strong and has not been for over 30 years. At some point, you have to accept reality.
If we end up with a winning season, say 7-5, how does he get fired? Even at 6-6 with a win over the Heels, firing TOB would be scandalous across most of the fanbase.
I still think there’s at least 4 more wins with this schedule, 5 if we’re lucky and that makes it an 8 win season.
