Looks like a gigantic waste of money to me…
This sidewalk scene is where the student housing is being constructed(6 buildings). I agree partly with JKL. Some of the costs on asthetics (I’m guessing millions) is over the top.
It is all an arms race in facilities. Even in academics.
If you don’t have them, then you will always be at a disadvantage and viewed as second tier.
This is very state of the art, and I think impressive, and a good drawing card for the university. But now to my real question, where is the article on the 9th inning win over Miami last nite. Watched it on television, and knew it would be on here today. ??????
Sooooo…are you guys ok with spending millions on buildings that attract the top athletes? This is the type of investment that will attract the top student and raise the bar at nc state. Everyone is thrilled that we are making progress with the athletic program, let’s do the same academically and truly become a premiere university nationally.
I just wish it didn’t look like a massive trailer.
NC State Architecture leaves a lot to be desired.

As a current student in Landscape Architecture I gotta disagree, I’ve seen some top notch work come out of their(even though the Deans attempt at a redesign of the chancellors mansion is laughable)this design was done by a Swedish firm after a number of other firms entered proposals. Yea its not a classic look for a historic university, and it even clashes with the oval courtyard of the engineering buildings, but it does embody the advanced progressive attitudes of Centennial Campus and will become a major focal point for potential students, major college reviews and even…. STUDENT athletes

is appears the operating hours are probably going to be reduced.
But StateFans is correct. We have to continue to evolve to attract the brightest faculties and students. And with the right leadership, we can turn that into a top-flight Engineering School. This library will be the center-piece of Centennial Campus.
Plus, it beats the hell out of the 5th floor cube in DH Hill where I spent much time during my time on campus in, gasp!, the 80′s.
Fast forward 30 years from now: “So that’s what they replaced Harrelson with.”
I love this building! It’s new and cutting-edge. I like the open feel, with all the windows and natural light streaming into the building; not like the claustrophobic feel you can get in DH Hill.
I admit that the design is somewhat “out there,” but it makes a big statement and it will be a magnificent centerpiece to Centennial Campus for many years to come.
I’m glad they didn’t construct some bland, boring box that would blend in with all the other buildings on campus.
Paramarine, Harrelson is a classroom building, home of the math department at State, and when I was there in the early 80′s we affectionately referred to it as the USS Enterprise of Star Trac fame because it was round and “disc”functional. I think that you are referring to D.H. Hill Library.
The problem I have with it, other than the $100mil price tag, and the fact that it seems that mostly only engineering students will benefit, is the fact that what all those windows overlook isn’t very attractive. So basically we have the landing craft from close encounters of the 3rd kind sitting there looking out over parking decks.
I believe this is a fantastic building and I don’t think it looks like the PA building at all. I think iit is important to have buildings that are exciting, inviting and inspiring. If you get to see the building in person it will WOW you.
Sweet. When working from home on various projects, I sometimes use the current Textiles library on Centennial Campus as a change of pace from the home office.
Looking forward to “my” new office with a view.

I don’t think it looks exactly like the PSU building, but they have their similarities. Especially if you look at the concept drawings. Because the library is larger it actually looks better imho.
Fletcher I don’t necessarily think $100mil is too much, I understand the construction business and what things cost, I just don’t know if this is the best use of $100mil for NCSU. I graduated in 2010 and never once had a class or reason to go to centennial campus. This may be something that will change in the future and maybe all students will use that campus, but as the way the school is set up now I see this new library being inconvenient for the majority of the students and only benefiting a small %. This may all be incorrect on my part but that is how I see it at the moment.
Thank you for your answer, beeeejay. As a humanities major I did not use Centennial Campus either, but I think there is a need there. I found this on the Hunt website:
The Hunt Library will also begin to remedy a substantial seating problem that has handicapped NC State. The University of North Carolina (UNC) system standard is to provide library study seating for 20% of the student population. NC State is far below that standard; we are currently able to seat less than 5% of our students. The Hunt Library will double our study seating capacity, but it will still be significantly below the UNC standard.
Where is this being built?
It looks like an exciting building. Its good to see it involves Jeff Lee’s firm. Jeff has given a lot of his time to NCSTATE architecture program.
Hi wufpaxno1, No mix up on my part. Likewise, I had my math classes in Harrelson, and I was getting at the fact that Harrelson was supposed to be modern and impressive for it’s time, like we have with the buzz about the new library.
My reference to Harrelson was based in my suspicion is that it will also be regarded as an eyesore in 30 years from now.
