A review of the major allegations against UNC:
1) Tutorgate/Academic “Prong” – A tutor was writing papers for athletes.
2) Tutorgate/Financial “Prong” – A tutor was giving money to athletes.
3) Tutorgate/Cover-Up “Prong” – When asked about tutorgate, individuals affiliated with the university didn’t cooperate with investigators.
4) Gary, Blake, and Santa Claus – Athletes received a total of over $27,000 from various sources.
5) @AnchormanAustin – Boy dun f***ed up.
6) Black Santa Employement – UNC had someone acting as an agent on staff.
7) Black Santa’s Finances – Blake failed to report any and all monies transferred between him and Pro Tect (agent firm) to the NCAA.
8) Black Santa Cover-Up – Similar to allegation #3, UNC wasn’t forthcoming about Blake.
9) Pseudo-Loss of Institutional Control – UNC is accused of ‘Failure to Monitor’.
More to come…

Current Penalties (Self-Imposed):
From previous article on UNC’s NOA response…
UNC will vacate wins from the 2008 and 2009 seasons for fielding ineligible players. They will also institute a 2-year probation and a reduction of 3 scholarships for the next three years. In the words of our very own ‘theCOWDOG’, “I’m convinced that the NCAA response is gonna sound something like this: OK, I’ll see your 9 over 3 and raise ya 12.”

Wait wait…I thought today was Monday, not Friday.
Fallout? I’m predicting a slap on the wrist followed with a parade for UNC in honor of their noble self-imposed sanctions. If this happens, I will personally take a dump on the old well.
I’m guessing they get additional scholorships and a guarantee mid level bowl no mater what their record is (on ESPN).
We should have a poll/prediction thread on this.
My guess?
- 2 year post season ban
- 3-5 scholarship reductions for the next 3 years
- Negating of wins
- Show cause for Butch Davis (and/or lackies).
- Players can transfer if they signed before the allegations surfaced.
- Swofford talking about how tough the sanctions were immediately followed by a UNC/ACC appeal.
Ultimately, it will be a wrist slap.
They should get what ryebread proposes, but let’s be honest… if that’s the judgment, we should all be tickled silly.
@CPT_Pack
The old well? I think you mean water fountain, because that’s what it really is.
OK. Heart A Pack, I was waiting for your prognostication.
I can now approach the money line on the over/under, and take the the over with confidence.
You had State solidly in the NIT, no ?
Who’s your upset special for the NCAAT ? I wanna get that team out in the 1st rd. if you’d be so kind.
GAWolf: The sad thing is that I think this is about what will happen, and I think it’s a wrist slap.
The only “real” thing that is even in that list is the postseason ban and I’d argue that for the type of bowls that UNC would make the next two years, that it’s actually in their favor not to go. Their fans don’t travel all that well, and most schools actually lose money by attending lower tiered bowls.
For effectively having an agent on staff, not complying with the NCAA, not releasing information, being drug kicking and screaming into actually doing something, UNC really deserves the USC treatment at the least.
HAHA! I am just jaded as hell (especially after Saturday). My upset special is the WOLFPACK!
…and Long Beach State.
Expecting a slap on the wrist but would prefer to see a scalpel to the main artery.
Either way… “great” publicity for the smurfs as we head into the NCAA tourney.
Hoping some announcers mention this several times…
I certainly agree that they should get absolutely hammered. It will be interesting to see what will happen today. My day just went from almost productive to no way in hell I get anything done today.
Charles Robinson tweeted that he thinks it will be about what tOSU got or maybe slightly worse, so yes it will more than likely be a wrist slap if he is correct
Rye, what you proposed is essentially the USC treatment. That ain’t no slap on the wrist.
( You missed the schols by 1 )
Next to easter Monday 1983 this could be the 2nd greatest day of my life!!!!!!
One of my Nole friends has this prediction: Swoff has cut a deal to spare UNC and is giving up UM as “The Example”.
One year post season ban.
Loss of 1 additional scholarship/year over a three year period.
Show cause for Butchie and Blake.
Announcement of the second inquiry that may result in additional penalties.
I hope you guys are right. I’ve seen these guys skate for too many years to expect anything like some of the penalties suggested here. My updated prediction:
No post season ban.
Increase probation from 2 years to 3 years.
Show cause for Blake.
No increase in the 2 schollies/yr. self-imposed.
Public censure….yada yada yada touchy-feely crap.
Acceptance of the self-imposed vacated wins.
So basically, nothing that materially punishes the institution.
I truly, sincerely hope I’m wrong. But these bastards always skate.
^Texpack: I would LOVE to see a second inquiry announced!
Wait… I just realized this information has originated with Inside Carolina. I hope, for those guys’ sake, that this is it. If not, the hilarity will be overwhelming.
I say Swofford should be forced to increase the penalties IAW what he personally perpetuated on Clemson back in the day. What is fair for one should be fair for the other, and make no mistakes about it, HE was the leader of that lynch mob. And if he doesn’t do it then fire him and do it as a group of ADs. And if UNX protests…kick ‘em to the curb and take away basketball schollys too!
timing of the announcement is pretty suspicious.
“Announcement of the second inquiry that may result in additional penalties.”
Wasn’t there already another inquiry after the first NOA came out? I thought that’s what delayed the handing down of punishments.
Also, anybody have any luck getting Davis’ 216-phone records? Too bad the NCAA doesn’t have subpoena power. It really irks me that Davis’ cheating by using his personal phone to conduct business can help him skate by NCAA rules.
If Davis gets away with using his personal phone for all his work related calls, I’d look for every coach in the country no longer use university phones. The 216-issue really is a slippery slope for the NCAA and they better be ready to get there rules even further circumvented, if they just hand out a slap on the wrist to UNC-CHeat.

x 216
BSU got three scholarships taken away for letting kids sleep on current players couches and the tennis coach giving our pb&js. i don’t see any way they escape without scholarship reductions
What’s the big deal? To put it in the UNC/Kendall Marshall vernacular, the violations were all just “ticky-tack”, and we all know that ticky-tack fouls shouldn’t be called. I can’t believe the NCAA would waste their time.
I’m personally disappointed the BoG didn’t demand an independent internal investigation, when it was discovered academic fraud was not monitored at all, with respect to football players turning in plagiarized papers.
How many other students at the “flagship” are getting away with cheating?
Swofford should’ve stepped up and demanded accountability.
