NC State earns 11th seed in Midwest Region!!! [11 PM Update]

Congratulations to first year head coach, Mark Gottfriend and his NC State Wolfpack for earning an at-large berth to the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament!! Gottfried takes the Wolfpack program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season and joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as first-year coaches to lead NC State to the NCAA Tournament.

NC State earned an 11th seed in the Midwest region and will play Steve Fischer’s San Diego State Aztecs on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. If State were to win on Friday the Wolfpack would advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Belmont on Sunday.

CBS really toyed with WolfpackNation when the network waited to announce NC State as the LAST of the 68 teams in the field. (Link) In reality, the Wolfpack was not even a part of the ‘Last 4’ in the field; State was ultimately seeded No. 42 overall, ahead of Texas, California, South Florida, BYU (in order).

The selection also committee announced that Oral Roberts, Miami, Nevada and Drexel were the first four for whom the bubble burst this year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference ultimately got five teams in the dance, with NC State joining rival, #1 seeded UNC-CH in the same region! Duke, Florida State, and Virginia also were included. Virginia’s 10th seed match-up with 7th seeded Florida looks to be a tough match up for the Cavs.

The intensity with which NC State fans have been sweating our position on the proverbial ‘bubble’ has increased to a fever pitch in recent days. But, if you were following SFN this afternoon you would have seen some ‘inside information’ that hit around 5:15pm that would have helped you breathe a little easier. (Link)

The Midwest region seeds are as follows: 1 UNC, 2 Kansas, 3 Georgetown, 4 Michigan, 5 Temple, 6 San Diego State, 7 St Mary’s, 8 Creighton, 9 Alabama, 10 Purdue, 11 NC State, 12 Cal/USF, 13 Ohio (coached by former NC State assistant, John Groce), 14 Belmont, 15 Detroit, 16 Lamar/Vermont.

This evening, Dick Vitale picked his sleepers as defined by 5th seeds or higher — UCONN, Memphis, Vanderbilt and NC State.

11 PM Update: Game time set.

@Pack Pride‏
State’s game on Friday at 12:40 will be called by Tim Brando and Mike Gminski. The game will be on TruTV.

Sweating it all the way. Worried that Iona got our spot. Great job MG! I believe we are back, and next season will be another big leap forward.

Anyone have a mailing address for CBS? I’d like to send them a bill for the blood pressure medications that I almost certainly need now.

Welcome back to the big dance, Wolfpack!

So incredibly proud of the fight in our team to keep pushing, words can’t express how proud and happy I am for the boy and MG/staff. GO PACK…WE ARE DANCING!!!!

Very good job by the committee, I agree with the selections (now that I see Iona’s #s as compared to Drexel). Thanks for leaving out the shitty likes of Seton Hall, Washington, and Mississippi State.

I actually like San Diego State better than Georgetown. They could easily lose to Belmont.

Congratulations to our coach and team! They rightfully earned it. Now, let’s go deep because we truly are capable of.

Did they show the team during the announcement? I wasn’t able to watch. Very cool.

I think this draw gives us a very good chance to do some damage as well. Should we dare to dream of getting the Heels on a neutral court with neutral officiating?

    DREAM BIG GaWolf….

I am already catching it from my Hole buddies about the fourth time…

Could NOT be prouder of our coaches and our guys !!!!

CJ Leslie is going to eat SD State’s lunch.

  14. AppPack14 03/11/2012 at 7:01 PM #

Holy crap. That was probably the best case scenario for match-up and seeding, though being the VERY LAST team announced had me on the verge of a full-scale tantrum…Survive and advance baby!!!!

    ^Right on, Rochester. Right on.

Don’t give up, don’t ever give up!

The team needs to watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l5N2eKdvL4 everyday before and during the tournament and know that this team IS the cardiac pack!!!! 11 seed or not.

Congrats to the team and MG and DY! I’m so happy that Johnson and Williams get to at least go to one dance before the end of their career! Make it count guys!

  17. nycfan 03/11/2012 at 7:03 PM #

Congrats and good luck. They coulda flipped State and UVa based on last ten games, IMO, but CBS certainly milked it.

I saw that “inside info” posted earlier but waiting so long to hear the team called had me worried. After all the worrying, this team was in more solidly than we thought.
Great job this year coach and great job and improvement for this team! Congratulations…you deserve the bid guys!

Here is something that MIGHT not get much play.

Coach Gottfried’s contract was AUTOMATICALLY extended for TWO more years if we got invited to the NCAA Tourney THIS year or next year. We got him for 7 years NOW.

NOT making the finals today, he lost a bonus of 1/12 of his annual salary or $37.5K (first year base is $450K).

He WILL get a one month bounus if we make it to the Sweet 16.

I, for one, am pulling for him to backrupt Debbie Yow…!

GO PACK. Columbus is about 8 hours from Raleigh. SW and USAirways flies there, but the SW tickets are MUCH more expensive. PROBLEM….your travel time, including your before and after airport and the actual flight plus connection times is about the SAME as just hitting the road and driving….

MIGHT just load up the Malibu and GO NW to Columbus.

    GO PACK…

PS, Coach G has a whole BUNCH of other incentives. I downloaded a copy of his contract last night.. Academic as well as Competitive. he would have gotten $37.5K if we had had Tyler Zeller (Academic).

When Iona was announced – I thought our chances slipped a lot. Then, when the last of the 12/14 play in teams were announced – I KNEW we were going to the NIT. Then, the very very, no one left, last paring announced – LOL. Life ain’t easy being a State fan. GO PACK!

  21. beeeejay 03/11/2012 at 7:09 PM #

Really really happy for the team but especially CJW so glad he will get this chance

  22. Rochester 03/11/2012 at 7:11 PM #

Just guessing that Coach G. doesn’t give a crap about his bonus right now. Making the NCAAT is plenty reward in itself. Not that he’ll turn the check down, but if a coach were motivated by the money he’d be sitting home waiting for the NIT to ring him about now.

  23. lawful 03/11/2012 at 7:11 PM #

does anyone have a feed of the team celebrating when the announcement was made? I missed the show and would like to see their excitement.

  24. BJD95 03/11/2012 at 7:12 PM #

The committee gave lots of weight to nonconference SOS and road record. As well they should, to counter the financial incentives of playing patsies at home.

  25. ScottieJ2000 03/11/2012 at 7:12 PM #

@beeejay Don’t be leaving Alex Johnson out!!! This will be his first and only dance! Couldn’t have done it without him!
