2 media report ACC referee tells Coach Gottfried “Shut your fucking ass up” during UNC game
Around 3:05pm on Saturday afternoon – deep in the the second half of the ACC Tournament semi-final game that saw significant national criticism befall the Atlantic Coast Conference officiating crew who called 42 phenomenally inconsistent fouls – I got a couple of strange tweets come through our SFN Timeline.
Someone had re-tweeted a tweet from @adam_smithTN that said, “Gottfried: “That’s a charge!” Ref Brian Dorsey: “Shut your #$%^&& ass up!”
Initially, I thought it was someone (who I don’t know) crafting a figurative allegory about Dorsey’s awful officiating at the time. Obviously, no professional official would ever talk that way to any coach — particularly a group of officials mired in a controversy that saw them publicly supporting Karl Hess in his recent dust up with Mark Gottfried’s NC State University by wearing taped ‘KH’ on their shoes in the opening round of the ACC Tournament (Link to story). And, particularly not Dorsey, who was an official on Hess’ crew that called the controversial game in the RBC Center when Chris Corchiani & Tom Gugliotta were ejected.
So, I asked if this was a real tweet or not in the SFN Twitter timeline (that was ON FIRE TODAY, by the way)?
When I did, 99.9 FM’s Joe Ovies quickly responded, “Yup, that just happened. RT @adam_smithTN Gottfried: “That’s a charge!” Ref Brian Dorsey: “Shut your #$%^&& ass up!””
Then I checked out this Adam Smith guy and learned that he is actually a member of the sports media out of Burlington for the Times-News.
So, this gives us TWO eye-witness reports from actual media members on press row that corroborate that an ACC referee taunted, disrespected and degraded NC State’s basketball coach in the middle of a phenomenally controversial game.
Let that sit for a moment.
Really…think about that for a while.
HOLY ****!!!! (forgive us for a moment…as SFN does NOT use the kind of language that ACC officials are allowed to use).
What is one to say about this level of negative bias, vitriol and outwardly aggressive animosity from a supposed ‘unbiased’ official whose judgement and whistle LITERALLY get to decide the outcome of the game?
I am genuinely too upset and wired to construct any kind of analysis or response at the moment. I will simply start by asking if anyone has ever heard an official say something similar to Dean Smith, Coach K, Roy Williams, or ANY other college basketball coach?
Oh my…could you IMAGINE if an official had said such a thing to Gary Williams? Do you think he would have lived to see the next whistle?
For decades, all but two of the Atlantic Coast Conference institutions have almost uniformly acknowledged that the conference has a major problem with officiating incompetence and double standards. Maybe some of the ‘good’ news about yet ANOTHER public implosion of John Swofford and John Clougherty’s officiating cabal will be some change is on the way. If not, we deserve to blame ourselves if we don’t do anything other than sit around the same lazy, old-boy environment that the ACC has created.

Ugh I mean just god almighty jesus christ in a side care. I thought I had cooled off until my college roommate called me to go over it again…..just damn it all to hell I just know we will get shafted tomorrow again I feel it creeping up behind me like the cold hand of death
Given that this info is now spreading around very quickly, I’m a bit surprised that its not being reported on yet by mainstream media outlets. If this happened, and it appears it did, its a really big deal that speaks volumes about the current state of affairs within the ACC. Consider:
The Karl Hess incident that disrespected NC State, in which no apology was given and no “real” public action taken against Hess.
Next, Hess’s posse’ of ACC referees shows up wearing solidarity patches in honor of Hess for the ACC Tourny, which we force them to remove, apparently making them mad.
Next, said posse’ of referrees clearly calls a very slanted game against NC State capped off big the blatent no-call charge on Marshall that changed the complextion of the game (just one example)
And then we learn one of the offcials actally disrespected NC State again, DURING the game, by telling our coach to shut his f… a.. up when he tried to protest said gross negligent call.
And the ACC wants us (or anyone) to believe there is no bias against us??? I’m so livid about how we’ve been treated but don’t know what to do about it. We can’t seem to find enough people to call out the ACC office on this. The media doesn’t seem to be willing to go there and shine a light on this, choosing too often to paint us lunatics instead and just move on.
I hope I’m not dumb enough to watch the final now. Really no reason to play Henson now, Duke can’t get a 1 and Carolina can’t lose theirs.
I am done with the ACC. I will not watch any ACC game not involving NCSU.
Easy answer, backnine. Leave. The Aggies will give us a nice welcome handshake.
I’m sure Swofford and the ACC referees are on the phones now with the selection comittee making a case AGAINST State tomorrow. I will be so pissed off if we don’t make it because of a no call game changer at the end.

I counted about 4 steps by Curry without a dribble on that last sequence before he launched the potential tying 3. No mention of it from anywhere. Amazing that FSU didn’t get screwed also.
haha they’re discussing the no-call against Marshall again on ESPN. They also showed Mark Gottfried’s post game press conference. I think he handled it in the best way possible. He was calm and quiet, but you could see him simmering with anger. He was very subtle too. Addressing Leslie’s foul out he said, “That’s our responsibility and that’s our fault. Though those two fouls just happened so quick, like boom-boom. Even then we still had two other guys with four fouls, so we were in a quandry. It was a tough situation, for sure.” The frustration was ALL OVER his face. Then his response to officiating was quick, succinct, and perfectly within league rules. “I can’t talk about it without getting fined.” SILENCE.
I love this comment by Marshall:
“I feel like in that situation I don’t think they’re going to call a ticky-tack foul,” Marshall said of the no-call on his banked jumper. “Thankfully I was able to make that play for my team.”

@beeeejay I thought the youngest child could cry and get away with anything. That’s what I would do. We can’t even do that. We get screwed by mom and dad (Swofford and the refs) every damn time!
A great link with tape of CL charge and asking the question how is this different from Marshall’s play. Easy Answer: See Marshall’s comment. The UNC player knew there was no way the ref would call a BS charge in the last second against them with the game on the line. End of discussion.

Alert the new press! UNC player admits with his own words that he knew that he wouldn’t be called for a foul!!!!!!!!

Everyone please write or e-mail the ACC office to let them know that after the Karl Hess mess this is totally inexcusable. B. Dorsey should be publically punished and never work in the ACC again.

At least we can take comfort in the fact that we can’t possibly be screwed any worse in the next 88 years, since this was the screw job of the century. Good to get it out of the way relatively early.
I think you underestimate the acc Rochester, I mean hell football fuc*** can not be too far behind since we are keeping unc from that darkhorse run to the national title every year
