WHAT A DAY!!!
In response to Everett Withers’ridiculously inappropriate comments yesterday, NC State Head Football Coach Tom O’Brien LET FLY this morning! (Link)
NC State coach Tom O’Brien on UNC’s coaching staff today: “As far as the flagship, here is a guy that was on a staff that ended up in Indianapolis. There are three things that you can’t do in college football — have an agent on your staff, pay your players and have academic fraud. That is the triple pay. I don’t know if they have anything to talk about. If that is what the people want in the flagship University of North Carolina, then so be it.”

This is becoming nasty between UNC Interim Head Coach Everett Withers and NCSU Head Coach Tom O’Brien.
On Wednesday in an interview with 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio Withers said, “When you have as many schools in this state as you have and the recruiting base gets watered down a little bit, I think the kids in this state need to know ‘the flagship school.” Withers also said, “They need to know it academically. If you look at our graduation rates opposed to our opponent this week’s graduation rates for football, I think you’ll see a difference. If you look at the educational environment here, I think you’ll see a difference.”
Tom O’Brien was quick to fire a rebuttal during his usual weekly Thursday availability with the media. In response to Wither’s “flagship” comment O’Brien said, “As far as the flagship, here was a guy (Withers) who was on a football staff that ends up in Indianapolis.” He went on to say, “You have an agent on staff, you are paying players & you have academic fraud. That’s a triple play.”
O’Brien also had a response to the academic questions that Withers raised on Wednesday by saying, “At our school, number one, all classes have a syllabus. Our guys go to school, they are not given grades, and they graduate.”
Will Brinson had a super ‘FakeTOBQuote’ on his Twitter account this morning –
“It doesn’t really matter whether Carolina wins, they’ll end up vacating it anyway.”

This also reiterates my vibe from the get go – I feel bad for Holden Thorp. He was in over his head, sure. But not a bad guy. His hands were tied until the BOT turnover.

I won’t say I expect a win, but I’m not expecting a loss, either. This is our house. And it’s UNX coming to town.
I figure if we win (and I think we can), GREAT!
If we lose, it’s another nail in the coffin.
And yes, I believe Thorp’s apology is sincere and not forced. I also find it good policy to take apologies at face value, unless there’s strong evidence not to.
Perhaps he will be a good representative of those decent UNC folks whose voices have been drowned out of late.
UNC is now denying the apology. (?)

A flagship university that hands out diplomas to any winno that walks on campus. That is really what the State of North Carolina needs. This flagship has a torpedo hole in the side the size of a bus and is sinking like a rock, perhaps it is time for the admiral to take his flag to a more deserving ship!
With all the smack talk from the coach, and players saying they got this one because we are minus RW, I hope we have the best game of the year, and MG smokes them thru the air. However, a win should in no way save TOBs job, as mediocrity is no longer acceptable. 5 years and where have we progressed to. Tell me and we’ll both know. 29-29 in the ACC. NOT GOOD!

Yes, dummies from Carolina, the plural of syllabus is syllabi, but that would generally go over your heads anyway.

i saw and talked with Tom O’Brien today at North Hills. I thanked him very much for his comments and told him that we truly appreciate him standing up for the guys and the school. He said….”I was just stating facts… all of those things did happen… there is no disputing any of it.”
Before today, Saturday’s game was looking like a definite loss for the pack. Now, it is a toss up and should be one of the most exciting games of the year – can’t wait.
Did I read that Woodson apologized? If so, he needs to apologize to the Wolfpack nation. THERE WAS NO REASON WHATSOEVER FOR HIM TO APOLOGIZE FOR TOB’S COMMENTS.
As someone else said, it’s the gutsiest thing anyone directly associated w/ your university in a public forum has said in a very long time.
No HOLEden Thorpe called Woodson to apologize as I understand it.
I would like to know if there is video/audio of HOLEden’s comments.

Milktoast said to make UNC look better than everyone else because

N.C. State spokesman Keith Nichols confirmed that the chancellors exchanged apologies.
“Holden and I have a great relationship,” Woodson said in a statement emailed by Nichols.
“We talked this morning, exchanged apologies and we’re moving on.”
