WHAT A DAY!!!
In response to Everett Withers’ridiculously inappropriate comments yesterday, NC State Head Football Coach Tom O’Brien LET FLY this morning! (Link)
NC State coach Tom O’Brien on UNC’s coaching staff today: “As far as the flagship, here is a guy that was on a staff that ended up in Indianapolis. There are three things that you can’t do in college football — have an agent on your staff, pay your players and have academic fraud. That is the triple pay. I don’t know if they have anything to talk about. If that is what the people want in the flagship University of North Carolina, then so be it.”

This is becoming nasty between UNC Interim Head Coach Everett Withers and NCSU Head Coach Tom O’Brien.
On Wednesday in an interview with 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio Withers said, “When you have as many schools in this state as you have and the recruiting base gets watered down a little bit, I think the kids in this state need to know ‘the flagship school.” Withers also said, “They need to know it academically. If you look at our graduation rates opposed to our opponent this week’s graduation rates for football, I think you’ll see a difference. If you look at the educational environment here, I think you’ll see a difference.”
Tom O’Brien was quick to fire a rebuttal during his usual weekly Thursday availability with the media. In response to Wither’s “flagship” comment O’Brien said, “As far as the flagship, here was a guy (Withers) who was on a football staff that ends up in Indianapolis.” He went on to say, “You have an agent on staff, you are paying players & you have academic fraud. That’s a triple play.”
O’Brien also had a response to the academic questions that Withers raised on Wednesday by saying, “At our school, number one, all classes have a syllabus. Our guys go to school, they are not given grades, and they graduate.”
Will Brinson had a super ‘FakeTOBQuote’ on his Twitter account this morning –
“It doesn’t really matter whether Carolina wins, they’ll end up vacating it anyway.”

I wouldn’t put it beyond the realm of possibility that the two of them cooked this up to put some spice in this game as they’re both on their respective way out the door…
even if TOB runs the table, it seems.
…that, or we could be seeing some recruiting-trail ill will spilling over into the press from the coaches.
Further, ANY D-I school talking too sanctimoniously about the academic standards/performance of its student athletes is treading on awfully thin ice…unless you’re Stanford or a few select others.
I hope our guys are as fired up as TOB. Idiotic comments by Withers. If he was fired before, he sure as hell is now.

BJD, I think you ment Michigan, Woody Hayes coached at Ohio State, When asked why he went for two despite a 36-point lead against Michigan, Hayes quipped, “Because I couldn’t go for three.” No biggie though, it was a great point and I would love nothing better then to one up the performance of 2008 in Chapel Hill (State 47, UNC 10) Go Pack!

I agree with you ryebread. I’ve talked with some polite UNC fans,i.e. NOT the ones who write on the WRAL smack forums, who think Whithers is done just because they feel like UNC needs someone who is pretty aggresive in the play calling and someone who is extremely good in what they do, e.g. Gus Malzhan on offense and Bud Foster on defense. I still think that TOB not making a bowl game this year is not necessarily going to remove him from his job, BUT Debbie will definitely have a decision to make about whether or not he should be coaching IF we do not make bowl game. I would have a better idea about that potential decision if she was the one who had made a decision about Ralph at Maryland last year.
Withers is a loose cannon. As one of the posters to that N&O blog pointed out, he ain’t likely to be the permanent replacement for Butchie. So he’s giving Butchie the game ball and running his mouth. He’s a troll.
Kudos to TOB for his measured response.
Our season is purdy much for naught now anyway but I hope we stomp them.
