N&O: UNC professor back home, still unavailable on McAdoo plagiarism
Chancellor Holden Thorp, in an interview last week, said he is not going to dig into Nyang’oro’s handling of the paper.
“It’s very unfortunate what happened here, but I don’t get into grading for faculty members,” he said.
Could you imagine if the NC State Administration had openly proclaimed they weren’t going to look into academic fraud issues when Jim Valvano was coaching and there were six different independent investigations into our basketball program for SIGNIFICANTLY LESS egregious violations?

I think it’s obvious what’s going on here. Any Chancellor in any credible university would fire the guy. So why isn’t Thorp? Apparently, every single player in this scandal has some shit on UNC administration.
If he fires him, then maybe he sings about his program and previous athletes going through it.
^ That and a lawsuit from the prof. They keep saying, “move along, move along. There is nothing to see here.”
Could you imagine the pandora’s box it would open to look into a department that ‘coincidentally’ has attracted DOZENS of basketball players in the last 15+ years?
^ bingo. Honestly, what else could he say? We all know they won’t dig into that grave because McAD’oh’s paper isn’t the only body buried there. Tt is a mass grave that would tear apart the academics and athletics of UNX and everybody knows it but there’s no one with the power to make it happen that isn’t already in bed with UNX.
This is beyond ridiculous. You’re essentially the CEO of UNC, and you’re not going to investigate an employee who failed to properly do his job that led to a huge PR hit… unreal.
Well its about weighing risk, if you are the CEO of UNC, the damage that another huge PR hit UNC would take if they dug into this is just not worth it. If it comes out that this was a fake class used to keep athletes eligible then that PR would destroy UNC’s brand. Right now they still have doubters but most people believe that this was just a couple of students and a tutor ‘going rogue’. So the objective now is to keep it that way.
Can the attendance records for class be requested or are they protected under student privacy laws?
Thorp says he won’t dig into it because, “I don’t grade my professors.” Heck, I guess no one gets graded on much of anything over there. This is beyond weak!! And I can’t understand why Thorp’s comments haven’t spurred another round of articles or editorials. Their being allowed to cast all this aside might just be the most maddening thing yet for me in this whole sorry saga. I doubt any of us would be afforded this type of leeway in our own jobs yet Thorp and UNC will be allowed to do so with no further questioning.

Generally speaking, I wouldn’t blame him for this “policy”. But considering the academic issues at the Hole, and the egregious amount of plagiarism that should NOT have been missed in this paper, one would think Thorp would address THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE with the good professor.
Wow, not even going to address it.
And these people were allowed to investigate themselves.
I read McAdoo received an F on the paper from the “Honor” Court.
Does anybody know the grade before it was converted to an F by the court?
This quote should be emailed to every member of the BOG. It is 100% unacceptable that the Chancellor in the UNC system refuses to investigate obvious academic fraud.
I don’t care if McAdoo went before the Honor Court and was given a failing grade. The Honor Court did not rule on this issue and if not for the NCAA scandal, it never would have been discovered because THIS PROFESSOR IS NOT DOING HIS JOB! The fact that Thorp doesn’t care about this is unacceptable.
Now is the time to hold their feet to the fire. Bring the house down.
Isn’t the chancellor the lead administrator at the university? Isn’t looking into this kind of stuff *exactly* his job?
I wonder if any of the “lifted” material is actual required reading for the course?
This is unbelievable. No one is asking him to “grade” the professor, but someone needs to see why the man was not doing his job. Apparently he usually does not teach this class. Wonder if they have a special section for the revenue sports players.
Thorp can’t go to the professor for answers, because he knows the answer.
The professor was only doing what he was told to do…give them C’s or better if they just show up.
All of this is going to BLOW UP in their face, it’s just a matter of time.
Thorp is too busy trying to find out what professor said in the survey that the intervention on the part of the athletic department was unethical. That way he can get rid of the ethical professors.
IMHO, this was the last straw for Thorp. Now he must go down, too. He can no longer save himself. In the sinking boat with Butchie and Dickie.
Thorp actually said “We’ve done a very thorough investigation on the academic side.”
How thorough is your investigation when it got scooped by the monkey board?!?
I agree – Thorpe is in a no-win.
newt, you’re right. It is a no-win for Thorp.
But Thorp definitely knows the best path to take on this. If he threw the professor under the bus, he knows the guy would sing like a canary about how they pass all their student-athletes.
My money is on an announcement later this week that Dr. Nyang’oro has accepted a $75,000 severance and is no longer with the University.
At this point, “Holdin the Bag” Thorp should just say “no comment”. The more they talk over there, the more stupid they look.
So now the question is whether any outside entity will force the issue.
If not, this is going nowhere and it’s business as usual.
