Reports: NCAA back on UNC-CH campus looking into Coples — It must not be Friday yet!

Yet another prong!  This afternoon word broke that the NCAA was back on UNC-CH’s campus — reportedly asking questions about a recent trip taken by star UNC-CH defensive lineman Quinton Coples.  Alert readers will remember Coples for his ridiculously late hit on Russell Wilson (~1:50 mark of that video) during the Wolfpack victory in Chapel Hill last season.  You may also remember Coples for his anti-gay tweet  last October.  But I digress.  Let’s get back on topic.   Check out this ESPN article on the subject of the NCAA being back in Chapel Hill this week.  Some excerpts:

An NCAA investigator interviewed North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples this week about his attendance at a Washington, D.C., post-draft party earlier this month at which former Tar Heels Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn were present, sources said.

and

Before the NFL draft, the NCAA warned some prospective draft choices not to allow any former teammates to accept extra benefits or preferential treatment from anyone such as an agent or a runner. The letter read in part: “Please do not jeopardize the NCAA eligibility of your friends or former teammates.”

The NCAA wants to know how Coples paid for his travel to the party, who paid for his admission and his hotel, and if he accepted any free food or drink.

I’m sure UNC-CH fans have nothing to worry about – as I am sure Coples correctly used Butch’s new “sign out” procedures before he left campus and did not take any extra benefits while he was up there.  BWAHAHA!  The ludicrousness of Butch’s bogus ‘sign out’ system is even funnier now than it was when we all laughed at it when he mentioned it last year.

Here is the full ESPN story from last month about how the NCAA warned underclassmen not to do exactly this type of stuff.

This story really got rolling on Twitter.  Here is some of the better Twitter stuff:

At least one alleged agent runner was seen in photos at the UNC post-draft party

There are photos of Coples at the Austin-Quinn party – guess where – on Facebook and a club promotion web site

UNC spokesman tells me NCAA was on campus again this week ‘as part of the ongoing review of the football program
How funny is it that they are still mouthing that ridiculous “review” charade.  Seriously, some of this stuff is so funny on its own I don’t know how to add snarky commentary.
OK.  On to the pictures!  I have to confess that I do not follow UNC-CH and may not know exactly who is in these pictures.  Alert readers — please help out in the comments with information about identities.
Who is that?  Coples is on the right I think.  Nice watch!
Here is Coples doing an Elvis sneer type thing — is that Mars Blackman?
Check out Coples’ cool wristband!  I wonder who paid for whatever cool party favors people with those wristbands got.  I am sure Coples paid for the wristband and even included it on the sign-out sheet.
Who is that?
Now I know who that is!  That’s our man Marvin!  Everyone wave hello!
Before I sign off for the night I will pass along some recent tweets that may indicate where this thing is headed.

RT @erithkay: Dick baddour turned me down for interview at baseball game, saying statement was only unc comment on coples and mcadoo
I wonder which McAdoo we are talking about.
@ArmstrongWTVD hotel was not paid for by these guys…they’ve got no record of payment from what I’ve heard…well see

How stupid do you have to be? Did these idiots not learn anything from the first time? Guess not.

When I first saw the news on the tweeter I knew another classic OMD entry would be on the way.

They are either really dumb or they just turn up their noses to authority and guidelines.

They think they are UNTOUCHABLE. They’ve been told they’re untouchable by their joke of a head coach, their AD, and by their young and incredibly arrogant Chancellor.

Thorp is the one I want to see get it when this is all over.

Eventually UNC players continuing to flirt with these questionable events will be either the demise of Butch Davis or severe punishment by the NCAA. Anyone who thinks differently is naive to the situation. Butch either lets this mess go on or does not know how to discipline his players to avoid these mishaps from hurting UNC’s football program. If it was me, rule one would be stay away from the appearance of anything questionable, especially if your a main contributer and star player because it gives reason that agents would want to try to lure them to their services for the future. I would tell my players don’t even get anywhere near an agent with what has already gone on. If I was a head coach at any school, this would not be tolerated and it would definately be in violation of my team rules. But then again I guess thats how Butch rolls, no accountability, no discipline, and a turning of the head type of thing. After all thats why these types come to UNC, to just live it up knowing that their coach will let them. How can this go on in a program that has been under the microscope for these activities already, it was up to around 14 players last year. NCAA needs to put reprimands on this program because they can’t do it from within obviously.

I said ealier in the evening on the forum page that if Quinn and Austin floated the boat, all would be fine…the longtime friend loophole. However, if there’s any truth to no receit evidence baring thier names…

The other thought that popped up was the sign out sheet that Mac mentioned, too. Who from the local establishment will bring it up first?

Dickie better hope the equipment mgr. is a skilled forger.

I would be embarrassed to have these guys play for my school… just from the pictures we keep seeing. Act like someone, guys.

Did StateFansNation hear about us getting a Belgian basketball recruit? Just wondering. You all posted 2 anti-Carolina posts on the day after the news broke but nothing yet on something that actually happened with our school.

^ Yes we did! In fact there is great discussion and analysis of that here: http://www.statefansnationforums.com/topic.php?id=5049

Thanks OMD. I don’t know what’s wrong with graduates of a more recent vintage, but this ABC graduate from the post-Sloan, pre-Valvano years appreciates the lightning-fast posts about “the troubles” up Chapel Hill way.

  17. TOBtime 05/20/2011 at 7:05 AM #

Thug is AZ THUG DUZ. You gotta be 2 people to be that stupid.

  18. State Fan 05/20/2011 at 7:08 AM #

    Sorry, post-Sloan championship, pre-Valvano years.

  19. GAWolf 05/20/2011 at 7:23 AM #

I think it’s very interesting that UNC spokesperson Kevin Best told Giglio that this latest trip to campus by the NCAA was part of “the ongoing investigation.”.

Thats garbage. This is new. Period. When will someone actually connect the dots to the misleading nature of UNC spin?

  20. GAWolf 05/20/2011 at 7:25 AM #

By connect the dots I mean publicly call these guys out for their mistruths? Where are the follow up questions calling the spade?

  21. PackInsider 05/20/2011 at 7:52 AM #

The arrogance, stupidity, carelessness, insert-derogatory-term-here of Carolina’s football program all points to one thing – LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL.

This Coples thing may be the kiss of death for Butch and/or their program. I think they were probably going to skate free of any significant damage. Now, if this Coples thing comes to fruition and violations are uncovered, Carolina better look out.

  22. TOBtime 05/20/2011 at 7:55 AM #

^GAWolf, they’re buried under piles of green-ink infused paper. Betcha. There is NO way the number of violations that have been uncovered in the last 9 mos at unx goes without massive media attention unless money changes hands. And lets face it, the hole puts out PLENTY of lawyers, journalists and bankers. Is there anything else required to cover a trail or even create a misleading one?

I love the shot of Mahvelous Mahv, with his classy brim expanded to the last freakin’ “one size fits most” notch !

If I let out a hat that much, I think I could sit in it 😉

How fat IS this guy ?????

  24. ryebread 05/20/2011 at 9:11 AM #

With how lightly UNC has gotten off, I absolutely understand why this stuff continues to happen. For all the ink last year, what ultimately happened?
    – Butch? Still there
    – Players? Most still there
    – Baddour? Still there
    – Thorpe? Still there

They lost an assistant coach and temporarily brought in someone dirty to do the exact same thing before he bolted to the NCAAs.

They lost some players and had other ones sit out. They still had a full season with a reasonably respectable record.

They still recruited extremely well. The players obviously don’t think anything is going to come of it.

I appreciate that this site keeps casting the light on UNC. Until the local media is willing to do the same thing, then they really are as untouchable as Ohio State.

  25. patientwuf 05/20/2011 at 9:26 AM #

I agree ryebread. It appears the coverup is greater than the scandal itself.
