Dave Glenn reports Barnes staying at Texas & recap of Tuesday’s wild Internet speculation

Note: Some of this entry was written last night. If you want to go straight to Dave Glenn’s Wed. update on our search, then go here and read the rest of the entry later.

______________________________________________________________

This entire entry could be a big waste of time because at this point we haven’t been able to verify the truth of any of the speculation we are about to make or the rumors we are about to point you towards. While it would be no surprise to SFN that Rick Barnes would have interest in coming to NC State, information on the search has been scarce and extremely hard to come by.

At times over the last few weeks we have thought we had a good feel for what was happening and the direction of the search. Of course, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that guys like Sean Miller who previously coached at NC State and Rick Barnes would eventually be targets of Debbie Yow. The order and the timing of how Yow dealt with the “big name” candidates was uncertain with several of these name coaches still in the NCAA tournament while at least one(Rick Barnes) was eliminated this past Sunday.

Yesterday afternoon was the first spike in Internet speculation that something was officially happening with the search. There are many critics of message boards, but as I pointed out with the UNC scandal very often big stories break on message boards and very often random posters on the Internet have the real story way before the media.

-Yesterday on Twitter, Dave Glenn of the ACC Sports Journal stated that he would have an update on the NC State coaching search posted shortly. He already had a story on the GT coaching search that we linked here.

-On Tuesday, I listened to Dave Glenn educate local callers that it was completely realistic that Barnes and Miller were candidates stating that he has known both coaches for 10 years and talked with them many times. Despite callers saying it was unrealistic and that NC State fans should be talking about mid-majors, Glenn was adamant that as long as Miller and Barnes haven’t said no then they are still candidates. If you will remember, then last week Glenn detailed how Uncle Jed bungled the coaching search five years ago especially in how we handled the courtship of Rick Barnes. Without Fowler in charge of the search 5 years ago, then it is likely the Sidney Lowe era never happens.

-On Monday, a normally reliable poster started this thread stating that Rick Barnes was to be in Raleigh at some point in the near future. This seemed to spark additional rumors about Barnes including potential sitings at the airport and on campus. In the age of cell phones, it is surprising that if Barnes really was on campus that someone didn’t snap a picture or shoot a video verifying his presence in Raleigh.

-Packpride runs their profile of Rick Barnes Tuesday afternoon. Coincidence? Then Packpride hosts a “Premium Chat” at 2:40 pm Tuesday which leads to more speculation and the spreading of additional rumors on Twitter and message boards about Barnes.

-Late yesterday afternoon/early evening www.packinsider.com posted this update:

We are unsure of what exactly that meeting was about, but the source, who previously said that he didn’t think Barnes was interested in the NC State position, has switched his tone and is now claiming that the current Texas coach is indeed looking very closely at the Wolfpack opening. Again, this is a source on the Barnes side which is how we were able to obtain this information.

*Update: To clarify, our source said nothing about Barnes NOT being in Raleigh. So if he was here yesterday or this morning, we don’t know about it. However, we’ve been told that he was not here this afternoon.

Read the full update. There is some Sean Miller information as well.

-This past Saturday, SFN ran with this entry on Rick Barnes. which was prompted by rumors on our message boards over the weekend of an offer to Barnes:

OK Rick said post it…I just wanted to be sure this site wasn’t like some others that want to keep everything hush hush because they’re scared it’ll cause anothe debacle like the last search if info slips out.

I was told by someone very close to the basketball team that we offered Rick Barnes yesterday. I hope he accepts! I was also told that C. J. Leslie will most likely not return next season. He most likely will declare for the draft but a transfer is also possible.

-What ever happened to Tuesday’s update from www.accsports.com and Dave Glenn? It was delayed until this morning:

DavidGlennShow David Glenn Show
@
@BKG1975 it will be in the morning…as we said on the show today things change all the time during these searches. I’ll tweet the link.

-Finally, Dave Glenn’s update just appeared minutes ago:

Arizona’s Sean Miller and Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart are among those who remain factors in the N.C. State coaching search, but Texas coach Rick Barnes no longer is in the mix, according to multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.

“We all know this search wasn’t going to move forward until N.C. State found out where it stood with guys like Rick Barnes and Sean Miller,” an agent who works with college coaches told ACCSports.com. “Kudos to (State officials) for doing everything so quietly. I don’t even claim to know the details, and I know some of the people involved here. But Rick Barnes definitely is staying at Texas, so that search can start to take shape now.”

I had to get this up quickly with Glenn’s update just being posted. I didn’t have time to edit this and will be doing so now.

Sooo it looks like this might have happened…

Barnes speaks with NC State, then speaks with his AD at Texas, decides to stay at Texas.

    All speculation of course…

  3. PackMan97 03/23/2011 at 9:58 AM #

While I’d be delighted if Barnes made his way to Raleigh, I also wouldn’t be upset. He’s nearing the end of his career and the thought a younger guy who could lead the Wolfpack for the next 20-30 years appeals to me.

  4. Daily Update 03/23/2011 at 10:01 AM #

Make sure you read all of Dave Glenn’s entry. Lots of information in there.

The Shaka Smart speculation is very interesting.

Shaka Smart – I know that everyone is primed for an “A List” coach – but I like how this guy’s teams play. Pressing, running, pushing the ball. He seems to have the makings of a rising star.

  6. Daily Update 03/23/2011 at 10:08 AM #

I am completely good with Smart after Miller.

  7. BJD95 03/23/2011 at 10:09 AM #

I will vomit profusely if we settle for Shaka Smart. He’s a complete crapshoot.

  8. wolfpackdawg 03/23/2011 at 10:12 AM #

I would be disappointed in Smart also…Not nearly proven enough and I hope Yow sees that. If we settle for him them I’m convinced we are cursed.

  9. seanb724 03/23/2011 at 10:14 AM #

I agree that Smart is a crapshoot. He’s had a couple good years at a pretty small school. It’s a huge unknown if that would translate to NCSU where he’s going to need to recruit at a high level. I’d love to be a team that “wreaks havoc” on the floor, but he’s to untested in my opinion.

Why almost not talk of Brad Stevens?

  10. Boyd 03/23/2011 at 10:15 AM #

We don’t know that Miller said no yet.

  11. blackdom 03/23/2011 at 10:18 AM #

Well you can forget Miller that is never going to happen. Smart? If it comes down to him I would go with Mooney instead . Smart has no real track record yet and for the most part he is playing with Grants players.

  12. BJD95 03/23/2011 at 10:20 AM #

That’s true – but if Miller does say no, we certainly better have a more impressive backup plan than a lottery ticket like Smart. I’m holding out hope that Turgeon is still the ace in the hole.

  13. tvp1 03/23/2011 at 10:21 AM #

    BJD: Agree 1000% on Smart.

If we have to go mid-major, at least hire a guy with an actual track record like Marshall.

  14. Boyd 03/23/2011 at 10:21 AM #

You can forget Miller, but you’re not running this coaching search. I say he’s still a viable candidate. Unless he specifically comes out and says “I’m not coming to Raleigh,” I will consider him a candidate. Wasn’t somebody else speculating about Donovan? Where have those rumors gone?

  15. primacyone 03/23/2011 at 10:22 AM #

From Glen’s Update: “….multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community.”

I call BS on that one. No way mutiple sources have confirmed this to DG. Heck, even the agent he quotes says straight up he doesn’t even know.

I’m not saying Barnes is coming or staying, I’m saying at this point nobody knows anything at all. Not us, not DG, not some agent. . . Nobody.

    blackdom,
You can forget Miller, but you’re not running this coaching search. I say he’s still a viable candidate. Unless he specifically comes out and says “I’m not coming to Raleigh,” I will consider him a candidate. Wasn’t somebody else speculating about Donovan? Where have those rumors gone?

We do not need to take another gamble on another coach. Shaka Smart is just that. Look at what happened to Caple after he left VCU. Anthony Grant was also at VCU after leaving Florida. I’m not saying he’s not or won’t grow into a good coach, but we need a PROVEN coach with some experience.

I don’t like the sound of things. I absolutely love Sean Miller, but the more I think about it the more I think he’s staying put. Arizona surely won’t make it easy for him to leave.

    Cue the A minus list.

  18. ThomYorkepack 03/23/2011 at 10:23 AM #

Same here BJD on Smart. Settling for someone that we have absolutely no idea whether he would win here or not would be hugely disappointing.

    But what else is new?

  19. Daily Update 03/23/2011 at 10:24 AM #

I am not sure that Turgeon is more impressive. Longer track record yes, but that losing conference record in his last season at Wichita St scares me. He handed Marshall a rebuild then took over an already built A&M team and has maintained the success. Four 2nd round exits at A&M. S

Barnes isn’t up to the task so it is best he stay at Texas. I don’t think he is a good fit based on Ms Yow’s expectations. If his wife is ill that needs to be his #1 priority. Hard to say what is happening but family comes first no matter what.

    Good Luck at Texas.

  21. nseast8 03/23/2011 at 10:25 AM #

If dg is right, I guess we aren’t offering up as much cash as multiple people said.

  22. blackdom 03/23/2011 at 10:25 AM #

I agree Turgeon,Marshall would be much better choice than Smart.
I have no idea where the Stevens talk is coming from but I would be shocked if he came here.

  23. packof81 03/23/2011 at 10:28 AM #

“The Shaka Smart speculation is very interesting.”

Yes, it is. VCU is on a roll.

The comments about Bruce Pearl are also interesting.

So, Bob Knight criticized Debbie Yow for using a search firm. Given the way the last search went, I think she did the right thing.

  24. ClassOf91 03/23/2011 at 10:28 AM #

I like Smart and think he is going to turn out to be a high level coach. Certainly riskier than other candidates, but I wouldn’t call him a crap shoot. He certainly seems to be a great motivator, and I suspect he’d be a top notch recruiter at his next job by building off this Cinderella run.

If, somehow, he ends up being our guy, I’ll get behind him. In a lot of ways, he’d be a lot more exciting hire than a Brey or a Stallings, who many would view as Herb-like.

That all said, with no real info coming out from our side, I kinda doubt he is high up on Yow’s list.

“If dg is right, I guess we aren’t offering up as much cash as multiple people said”

There is no way we could ever match UT money.
