Sean Miller with Jim Rome – sound familiar?
Please take a few minutes to watch this entire video posted this week on ESPN of Jim Rome’s interview with Sean Miller.
Now take a moment to mentally replace the word “Arizona” with the words “North Carolina State”, reflect on that for a second, and then see what you think. The two are completely and easily interchangeable.
Miller’s statements are evidence that he is capable of recognizing a challenge, realistically assessing that challenge, accepting that challenge, and ultimately conquering that challenge.
Few would look at the state of our basketball program and fail to objectively see the challenge it presents to coaching candidates. Perhaps NC State is more removed from its glory days than Arizona two years ago, but the theme remains the same.
With Arizona playing this weekend for a Pac-10 Conference Tournament Title, congratulations should go out to Coach Miller and his staff at Arizona for turning around a once storied program recently mired in mediocrity.

Link doesn’t work.
hmm, the link doesn’t seem to be working for me
Yow will make a valiant effort but Miller is not leaving Arizona. At least at this juncture.
I will add that had we moved on Lowe after year three as we should have done and which would have been completely warranted, Miller would be here.
He seems to be getting more and more national acclaim for the fine work he did this year. That doesn’t bode well for us as Zona could easily up the ante and make him even happier.
I took liberty to edit the link to what I believe GAWolf intended it to be.
I’m telling you, this is Barnes circa 1999 redux. If we did what needed to be done with Sendek at the time, Barnes would now have been in his 12th season at State.
As was the case then, we will be two years late in missing the Miller boat.
we could have already missed on miller.. he’s not the only good candidate available. i like the silence in raleigh about a new coach so far… watched the sid lowe show last night.. each topic discussed seemed like sidney was saying i’m gone.. and he ended the show pretty much thanking us for the oppurtunity!
Dogbreath,
Tuscon isn’t a great place to live. You’re in the middle of the desert, 50 miles away from the border. They have friends in Raleigh. Their kids are fairly young, and NC’s schools are better. The ACC is a much better conference than the PAC-10. There are tons of reasons for him to leave.
I guess I’m missing something. Why does anyone think Miller will leave Arizona to come to NC State? Why did anyone think Barnes would leave Texas for NC State?
Supposedly, Miller’s wife doesn’t like it in Tucson. They lived in Raleigh for 9 years, so they naturally have ties to the area and school. There is new administration in place (this is why Barnes didn’t come here). It’s a logical step. No, we haven’t been important in college basketball in 20 years, but we’re 20 minutes away from the 2 of the best college BB programs in the country. With the new administration in place, we’re a program that looks very appealing. So yes, you’re missing something.
^ i’m in that camp. I would LOVE to get SM but just don’t see it happening. It would be a lateral move AT BEST. I sure hope i’m wrong
Josh Pastner was just on Rome and he was really talking Miller up. Said he helped him get the Zona job. Seems to be quite a buzz right now surrounding Miller.
The link is fixed. Sorry about that guys. Thanks for the help, BAM.
The Pastner v. Miller story is going to be awesome to watch unfold. Pastner would love to see Miller bolt AU as he’s certainly the next in line.
Yes, It may be a lateral coaching move, but Sean isn’t the only member of that family. There may be reasons other than just Sean’s job that they would want to move east. I know coaching is 24/7 job, but if he can get a pay raise, and live where he and his family wants, then why not?
It seems hard to believe Sean would leave Arizona after just two years there. But the rumors I’ve hears are that he and his wife consider themselves “east coast” people. And his wife has family here. If they do want to be back on the east coast, this could be an opportunity he may not want to pass up.
Like someone said, it would have been nice if we had moved on Sean two years ago. Thanks a lot, Fowler.
Bradley,
That’s what I keep saying. If he passes and we land a successful coach, he may not have the opportunity to come here again in his career. So if he’s serious about moving back to the east coast, more specifically Raleigh, he’s got to jump on this now.
I’m afraid that I agree with Dogbreath. I was for making a change on SL any time after year two. We’d tanked badly enough for the gaps to be impossible to ignore. Miller was a name I loved then — before he blew up and went to Zona.
Now I think we may have missed on Miller. He’s had success at a top 20 program. I doubt he’s leaving that for our job.
He should be our #1 target through. Yow should make a hard run at him. I just don’t expect anything to come.
No way in hell Sean Miller leaves the cushy Pac-10 to come here.
Why? Why not leave a bad conference in a place you don’t like living? Are you serious? The only reason I can see to stay is because he’s only been there 2 years. Think outside the box people!
People shouldn’t be setting this up as Sean Miller or bust. This is probably not this best timing to try and snag Miller. He is being highly paid and is just finishing his second year.
If the Miller’s want out of AZ and back east maybe Raleigh will be a good fit.
The problem the Pack has is that NC State isn’t a highly coveted job that a “made” coach is going to come just because it is NC State. State will have to pay big money to get a big name. Has state ever landed a top coach in basketball or football. None that I can remember.
Realistically, State will probably need to find a hidden gem like AZ did two years ago. AZ has already discovered Miller and paying him enough to pretty much lock him in.
Who is going to write a check for 3 million a year for a guy without a final four?
“As a coach, Matt (Doherty) has the total package.” Dean Smith when they hired Doherty.
Who said anything about this being Sean Miller or Bust… other than you, al;sdjgasldgkhasdgjakhfas?
“I will add that had we moved on Lowe after year three as we should have done and which would have been completely warranted, Miller would be here.”
You need to add “had we moved on Fowler in (Sid’s) year two…” otherwise the whole circus would have been repeated.
Could have would have should have, we are where we are. We have to make the best of it. Do I hope SM comes here, sure. But there are other great candidates. Turg, Marshall, Grant, Martin, all good candidates.
