Thinking Super Bowl
It’s a very slow sports viewing weekend…except for the Super Bowl. Packers vs. Steelers in the house Jerry built. I have nothing against the Steelers, and really admire Mike Tomlin (though Ben Roethlisberger is more than a little creepy, in a Lenny from “Of Mice and Men” way). But I will be pulling hard for the Packers tonight.
Why? Because Aaron Rodgers deserves that ring. And several more. He held his tongue, while a certain redneck, pill-popping, prima donna, pick six throwing egomaniac held the franchise hostage. Then, after #4 leaves town, people still wear his jersey to games for way longer than is understandable. Favre’s miserable performance on and off the field, combined with Rodgers leading the Pack on a stirring “road warrior” run through the NFC should put that to rest. But a Super Bowl title definitely does it, and hopefully we never hear about Brett Favre and cell phone pics of his tiny “man” parts ever again.
There’s also a State connection – in Favre’s senior year at Southern Miss, he lost the All-American Bowl to an underachieving 6-5 NC State team. I watched the game on ESPN Classic recently, and even then – all the broadcast team could say, from start to finish, was “Favre, Favre, Favre, Favre!”

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Go Packers! No offense Steelers, but Aaron Rodgers needs this redemption. Remember the draft?
Sadly, this will be another young QB with a ring if the Packers win – PR is turning out to be just about the only one who hasn’t gotten that notch in his belt, and with the state of the Chargers, I don’t see that changing for the foreseeable future.
Marino redux, anyone?
I will pull for anybody over Ben. He’s way more than just creepy, he’s an alleged rapist. We’re all wise enough to know that there’s likely more truths to the allegations than not.
GO PACK-ERS!!!
How ironic is it that Jerry Jones gets his Super Bowl and the two teams that are playing in it are arguably two of the biggest nemeses the Cowboys have had over history?
That said…I hate the Steelers, hate the convict Roethlisberger, and would love to see the Packers demolish them.
Speaking of Favre: I have that All-American Bowl on tape. I’m no fan of his, either, but when he sprinted out left and flung a 50-yard completion in the air on the dead run in that game…well, I still go back and watch it to this day. That was pretty remarkable.
The ultimate Jerry Jones game would be Pittsburgh vs. Washington. But Pitt-GB is a close second.
He has got to hate it, especially when his Cowboys imploded this year. Haha.
It will be an interesting game between 2 redneck teams with grit and determination.
And even more interesting to watch on BBC…. english blokes doing the comments??? WTF!
“…though Ben Roethlisberger is more than a little creepy, in a Lenny from “Of Mice and Men” way” ”
Or even in a Kobe from an “Eagle, Colorado resort” way.
“Then, after #4 leaves town, people still wear his jersey to games for way longer than is understandable.”
Please. I’ve still got jerseys (and still wear them) from #17, #9, #81, #4 (Jamie Barnette), a #22 (Tremayne(sp?) Stephens), and even a #23 (Ted Brown). They may not have been prima donna jerks, but my #44 NCSU football jerseys (2 of them) are from a guy who turned out to be.
But dammit, those things are expensive and I still wear all of them, including the #44′s. Of course if anyone asks I tell them I got them a few years earlier when the #44 was worn by a certain all-ACC linebacker (Levar Fisher for those whose memory is even worse than mine).
“Because Aaron Rodgers deserves that ring.”
Aaron Rodgers seems like a nice enough guy, but I suspect he makes plenty of money to compensate for his excruciating existence for the past several years as an NFL quarterback. If not I suppose he could have always quit and gotten a real job. No wait, I forgot, there haven’t been any of those available as record numbers of folks lost their jobs, lost their homes, etc.
Yeah, Aaron’s probably doing just fine making $11 million per year so I’ll opt to not feel too sorry for him. And Favre couldn’t have held the franchise hostage if they hadn’t let him.
Besides, in the words of Clint Eastwood (William Munney in “Unforgiven”), “Deserve’s got nothing’ to do with it”.
Being a die hard cowboys fan, I just can not pull for the steelers in Dallas’ stadium. Go Packers!
^ You must really hate all those Steelers fans holding up the “This Is Steelers Country” signs then.
Congrats to the Packers!
Well done Packers!
Note this morning’s News & Observer sports headline: THIS PACK IS BACK.
There were a thousand ways they could’ve reported it instead of making a reference to “our” Pack’s woes. Thanks, guys.
Did Aguilera butcher the National Anthem or what? Almost as painful as watching us play hoops.
I missed her singing live last night but saw the replay this morning. I think she was more than embarrassed. I still like the traditional version versus the country or her style. That song isn’t meant to be rearranged cause you’r asking for trouble.
That was a pretty enjoyable game for any fan to watch last night. Just wish both teams had been at full strength. As much as I dislike Ben’s off field antics, I respect the Steelers, but was pulling for the Packers.
As a Packer’s fan since forever, I loved it. For NFL fans and FOX, the game was in doubt with less than a minute to go, what more could you want?
good for a rogers, no more of this farve talk, i mean really, yeah he was a great quarterback, but enough already. I hope P Rivers gets his sb trophy soon, but i think his team needs a real coach.
