Breaking: Gavin Grant arrested, Degand not charged (Updated 11:10pm)

Police on Sunday arrested a former North Carolina State University basketball player in connection with a home invasion last fall.

Gavin Troy Grant, 25, is charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. He was apprehended without incident in a home in the 5400 block of Summit Manor Lane, police said, and he was expected to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

The charges stem from a home invasion on Crossroads Arbor Way on Sept. 24. Police said two men forced their way into an apartment, assaulted two people who were inside and attempted to rob them. The occupants fought off the men, who fled before completing the robbery.

Police haven’t identified the second robber, but one of Grant’s arrest warrants names Farnold Degand as a conspirator in the robbery.

Grant was a forward/guard for N.C. State from 2004 to 2007. Degand was a Wolfpack guard from 2007 until last year.

Grant, who played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League from 2007 to 2010, was charged with a felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses in January 2009.

Grant was recruited to NC State by Herb Sendek. Degand by current Head Coach, Sidney Lowe.

Don’t know what to say at times like this. So, I will let one of the finest representatives of our local Universities make the point to help clear Farnold Degand. (Link) Don’t you know that only the robbers who get caught are the ones who did anything wrong and should get in trouble?

One of Grant’s arrest warrants names Farnold Degand as a conspirator in the robbery, but Sughrue said he wasn’t been charged in the case.

Degand told WRAL News Monday, “I wasn’t there at all. I was never in the vicinity. I had to answer some questions, but was never charged with anything, and I’m just trying to get my name cleared now.”

When reached for comment, Grant assured us that he will serve a maximum of five years, if not fewer.

Champions in the classroom, champions in the community, champions in the court room.

    “…home invasion last fall.”

Degand was a member of our basketball team at the time of the crime. That’s lovely.

The end of the road in college athletics isn’t always pretty. Unfortunately the name of the University sticks with the athlete, especially if there is trouble.

“Last fall” just ended last month (and note that article dates it Sep 24). Degand was not a member of the team then (not that it makes this any less embarrassing).

Ok, I was thinking fall a year ago. Haha

Old news about Gavin. Don’t forget, he also used a fake credit card at Saks a few years ago.

The shocking thing about this story – Grant was good enough to play for the D League for 3 years???

Wonderful … at least some folks have made me lol in this thread.

While Gavin predicted his senior year that we would only lose 3 or 4 games, he predicted this years team would go undefeated……..Did he raid a CRACK HOUSE ???

  16. wolfman1959 01/31/2011 at 4:52 PM #

Forced their way into a home and then got beat !!!! Sounds similarly familiar to their basketball careers !!!

Grant with the steal…Degand with the assist!

  18. Lunatic Fringe 01/31/2011 at 5:12 PM #

It’s just a continuation of NC State’s inability to finish the job at someone else’s home.

I did read on another site, posted by a mod, that Degand was in Boston at the time of the break in and was wrongly implicated in the police report. So maybe we should gather the facts before we trash his name.

Well said Lunatic…..I am not as creative in my verbiage !!

“i always waited for grant to “breakout” ”

Sounds like that may soon be more of an issue for him than in the past.

  23. Texpack 01/31/2011 at 6:15 PM #

Seems like an awful lot of effort for Gavin Grant to put forth.

  24. GAWolf 01/31/2011 at 6:32 PM #

This is pretty old news, obviously. The warrant has been out for a long, long time.

I think it not Likely Degand is invovled. He actually is a stand up good guy. As for Grant. Enough has already been said.
