Coples, Reddick, Davis Should Be Suspended

It has been announced that UNC LB/thug Kevin Reddick will inexplicably be eligible to play this Saturday. Sadly, there’s not even any mention of DE/bigger thug Quinton Coples – who should be done for the season, including bowl game.

The best video of the catch and subsequent Reddick punch was shot by WTVD and can be seen here.

Let me explain further. Hole safety/general all-purpose asshole Deunta (“27akaTheHitMan”) Williams, previously suspended four games for improper benefits, apparently was blowing off some steam after going 0-for-his career against NC State. Discussing the Reddick incident – and an egregious late hit by Quinton Coples on Russell Wilson four plays earlier – Williams claimed his Hole brethren were retaliating for Wolfpack players allegedly spitting on them.

Not that you’ve seen much written about this topic. Fortunately, an eagle-eyed (eared?) SFN commenter brought it to our attention. We did confirm with a media member who was in the UNC locker room – Williams did in fact say it.

Now, I want you to go back (if you saved your game DVR) and watch the hit Coples put on Wilson, after picking up a huge 3rd and 19. Go ahead, I can wait. Ready now? Good. Watching live, I screamed very bad things about Coples at my TV, and felt ejection was warranted. The hit was at least 4 to 5 strides out of bounds, and Coples didn’t launch until he was 2-3 strides out of bounds himself.

With “Hitman’s” comments adding context, the hit is now clearly pre-meditated. Not only that, I see a pretty clear intent to injure. I also think it was no accident that Coples took his cheap shot when the penalty would only be 4 yards (half the distance to the goal) instead of 15. The fact that Reddick threw a punch 4 plays later (after a TD pass) only adds another layer of deliberate, pre-meditated conduct. And with this level of pre-meditation – including the stupidly admitted knowledge of a player involved in NEITHER cheap shot – how likely do you think it is that the coaching staff didn’t know anything?

It’s prefectly fair to hold Butch Davis (who should already be on his best behavior, but apparently is a slow learner) responsible for this type of headhunting. Additionally, Davis publicly criticized the officiating post-game, which earned Tracy Smith a one-game suspension last year.

Back to “Hitman’s” allegation. A stadium full of hostile patrons, a full officiating crew – and nobody else said word one about any spitting. Color me skeptical, at best. And even if it were true (in which case I would have expected TOB to take prompt, decisive action against such nonsense), it’s somehow a rational, proportionate response to (i) try to ruin a student-athlete’s professional career; and then (ii) punch a guy in the head? One of these days, they will pop off in the wrong place at the wrong time, and get their teeth kicked in.

These were not isolated incidents either.

Alert readers will remember the Donte Paige-Moss punch from their game with Miami this year.

If you want to see another Donte Paige-Moss punch, here you can see him take a cheap shot swing at Sterling Lucas after last year’s Wolfpack victory over UNC-CH.

Butch is building quite a program over there.  It has the on-field thuggery and off-field problems of the “old school” out-of-control Miami teams.  The parallels end there — those Miami teams actual won some games.

Can someone provide video of the late hit on Wilson? I was at the opposite end of the stadium when it happened and could barely see what happened.

    Totally agree.

In fact, “Hitman” drew one of those 2-yard personal foul calls in the first quarter. After those two incidents, I firmly believe the players intended to take cheap shots like this all game when the penalty would be minimized. And given the “credibility” of the coaching staff, I wouldn’t be shocked if it was planned by the staff.

BJD, this was a totally level headed articles until the prison nonsense. I don’t think we need to take it there.

The hits were dirty (and most likely premeditated), but the conclusion stooped to a new low.

Play starts at 3:15. It’s pretty blatant.

After re-watching Coples’ late hit, I can’t believe that the announcers didn’t make a bigger deal over it. It was one of the more egregious you’ll ever see given just how far out of bounds it took place. I’ll give the announcers the benefit of the doubt and assume they were simply bedazzled by Russell’s effort.

I too will be interested to see if the ACC head office says a thing to Davis about criticizing officials. That’s a no no, and the punishment is pretty clear cut. Question is, will John Swofford take notice or will he clearly exhibit favoritism towards his alma mater?

The acts that pre-meditated JWilliams challenge were unsportsmanlike, potentially dangerous and downright thuggery against a defenseless player. First it appeared that Reddick jammed his knee into Owen’s face and neck, then attempted to step on his face, and finally attempted to kick him beside the head. The one ref appeared to see the first act and was moving toward Reddick when interrupted by the other refs to confer on the play. When JWilliams could not get their attention, he took matters into his own hands and the penalties ensued.
Hopefully our administration is working with the other schools to bring this conference back into alignment. One of the conference schools has gone rogue and will ultimately hurt the rest.

Is there another link. The 3:15 link above is TJ Graham running around with flag.

I’m sure Swofford will take this out on Florida State women’s soccer. Or suspend Julius Hodge.

Intentionally knee a player on the ground in the head and throw a punch, no extra punishment needed. Sit your starters after the conference schedule makes you travel all up and down the east coast over the span of a week, that will get the hammer dropped on you.

    Hypocrisy at its finest.

  10. Mike 11/22/2010 at 2:44 PM #

Swofford is too busy suspending womens soccer players and coaches for resting that he does not have time to review a punch and other classless acts.

I think I am going to put a small video together with all of these ‘events’ together……

Anyone care to list off all the cheap shots they have taken over the past 4 years…..and if possible link a video of said event?

    Thanks

Calling these guys thugs is being generous. As you pointed out, there was a stadium full of hostile patrons. If one of our guys had lifted a hand against one of these tarhole chicken $#!&s, there would have been a feeding frenzy. If the tarholes are so tough, go climb in the cage with one of those MMA guys. They are big and strong but being big and strong and being a good fighter is not the same thing.

But this ain’t about who is the toughest fighter, is it? That ain’t what they want. They just want to start business that can’t be finished on the spot. They want to sucker punch people and take pot shots with an angry mob behind them.

If an NC State player had done the same thing, there would have been a hue and cry.

I can’t cite specific plays but last year’s game at CF was tame compared to the one this year. If Reddick had done that (knee-to-chest, kick-to-Spencer’s-head) off the field he’d be facing assault and battery. OK for the game to be violent on the field and on the clock, but no excuse for the breeding ground of thuggery beyond the bounds sportsmanship that Davis apparently endorses.

If Butch doesn’t condone these cheap shots why doesn’t he come out publicly and discipline those players?

  15. fullmoon1 11/22/2010 at 3:12 PM #

That my friends is the true “carolina way”. Spitting through a face mask is pretty hard to do and counter productive as you get spit all over yourself. We have watched the basketball team behave like this for years and the same attitude prevails in football. I am not sure I could have held my composure as the wolfpack players did and they should be commended. If the spitting was so egregious why was it not caught on tape. What do you expect from a pig(or a sheep in this case) but a grunt.

One comes to mind is last year with Jarvis Byrd and Greg the “ultimate Thug Little” when he blocked Jarvis until his knee crumpled and then Thug Little stood over him and talked smack. I know SFN did a piece on this last year so it should be still in the archives and I know there is video of it.

I agree, I was disgusted when I saw the end of that play. He is lucky the whole team didn’t jump him there on the spot. And UNC please get rid of those pom-poms in the stands.

  18. NCSU88 11/22/2010 at 3:41 PM #

I did a series of screen captures of the hit out of bounds if someone can tell me how to post it.

  19. Plz2BStateFan 11/22/2010 at 3:42 PM #

Here is what I am going to put together off the top of my head.

    1) Little standing over Byrd 2009. Already have good video of this.

    2) Riddick brawl 2010. Will have to search youtube for this.

    3) Roy Williams Presbyterian Bball 2009. Already have good video of this.

    4) End of game punch from 2009 from UNC player. Probably no good video for this. It was hard to see. But it is out there.

    5) If I can find a downloadable clip with a good viewpoint, the late hit on Wilson 2010

    6) Miami Punch 2010. Need video or gif

    7) Group of UNC linemen throwing Baker down 2009. (this one may or may not make it) Have video of this.

I already have some ideas about the audio as well. Inserts of disapointed Butch, pissed off Obrien. Etc. Fun stuff.

    Spelling be damned.

  20. highstick 11/22/2010 at 3:52 PM #

This video should be sent to Swofford, the UNC BOG, backed up by articles in the media, demanding that Davis be fired for his continuing lack of control over his thugs. Swofford should be blasted severely as it was obvious that all he’s doing is protecting his alma mater.

Every AD and College President in the entire ACC should demand that Swofford resign immediately because it is obvious that his rulings are biased!

Swofford, you’re as low on the Scumbag Totem Pole as your freakin’ Indian Chief coach!

Next time time there’s a conference opening elsewhere, that needs to be used against him as a threat to resign…

    Butch Davis quote”

I cannot be held responsible for every act of thuggery on the field!
