Butch/UNC staff giving their version of scandal to recruits?

I guess this latest display of a lack of ethics coming from Butch Davis and his coaches shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Despite UNC not cooperating with the media in releasing information the public is entitled to and avoiding detailed answers in regards to the investigation, Butch and his staff are freely giving their version of the outcome of the scandal in Chapel Hill to recruits according to a local high school coach:

“Devonte has always liked Carolina,” Bailey said. “He actually committed, then decommitted to them this summer when he went up there for camp. But he’s always liked them. Then the stuff with (John) Blake threw him for a loop for a while. But I think Coach Davis and the staff convinced him that all the (NCAA) sanctions involve players and not the actual program. I don’t know what happens if that changes between now and signing day. But for now he’s committed to North Carolina.”‘

Former UNC associate head coach John Blake was in charge of the recruiting efforts for Brown until he resigned in September over a relationship with sports agent Gary Wichard.

So Butch and UNC’s staff can give their opinion of the outcome of the current scandal in Chapel Hill to high school recruits, but they refuse to openly discuss this matter with the public?

UNC continues to selectively comply with requests by the media to share information about the NCAA investigation, however UNC willfully provides their version of events to high school football players, families and coaches to advance the football program?

If this only involves rogue players and a rogue coach, then why won’t UNC officials release more information?

What are they afraid of?

If the policy is not to discuss the scandal, then shouldn’t that policy be followed strictly and not selectively only when it helps your football program?

Ethics and morals be damned. The Carolina Way.

I can’t get over this trend. They continue to lie and gain players. We are clean and 7-3 and have not had a player commit in how long?

My issue with this is why can’t Butch go ahead and make this statement to the public? I have no issue with him making the statement, but he should officially go on the record with this statement instead of hiding behind FERPA and other privacy bullshit concerns.

I’d also remember that a lot of these kids are typically blue coolaid drinkers from birth, so until they hear it officially, they are going to believe the coach. You can’t blame Davis for continuing to say this crap, its all they can do. Its more of an indication that these recruits they have targeted aren’t well informed / don’t care / are impressed by what UNC offers overall outside of the football walls.

I feel for these kids who make one of the biggest decisions of their lives based on half truths of someone like Davis.

When the hammer drops, I will truly feel sorry for the kids stuck in the program.

don’t forget what he told the kid from virginia that “all the players would need to do is repay what they took” and that was when the university line was telling everyone they were forbidden from mentioning anything.

they are liars, what’s new, the Carolina Way

    Two days?

    Clark, who?

  8. rtpack24 11/15/2010 at 4:08 PM #

Chief Davis and little Dicky B said it was a review of a couple of players and it would be concluded before the LSU game. That was a little inaccurate.

All we can do is keep reminding people of the past…maybe potential recruits will discover this information for themselves:

    http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2001/writing/over250.columns.fourth1.html

The big lie started each morning when Butch Davis entered his office, telling worried assistants he was staying, promising worried school officials the new contract just needed to be signed and scoffing at any media who asked about his future – usually after he was caught flirting over a job somewhere else.

In his final hours at the University of Miami, the football coach pulled off the liars’ Triple Crown: Lying to athletic director Paul Dee that he wasn’t going anywhere; lying to assistants by mapping out his week’s recruiting itinerary; and lying in the face of high school recruits making their official visit.

“Guys just didn’t trust him, point blank,” one Browns player told me Tuesday morning, just hours after Davis’ departure became official. “With any coach, you have to buy into what the guy’s selling. You have to believe in him, no matter what. That’s essential. And we never bought into Butch. I never saw any trust coming from the players, because we knew he was full of [crap]. Guys had just tuned him out a long time ago.”

    …and…

“You can tell he’s lying, because his lips are moving,” said the player, who is no longer with Cleveland. “That’s how guys feel about him. You can’t trust what he says.”

^ Sad thing is Coples, originally their 3rd string I believe, would be starting for us right now. As I remember, we recruited him and Leon Mackey hard. Its not absolutely crazy to say that we are one or two talented defensive ends away from being undefeated this season.

    Good find Shavlik!!

ShavlikLeague – very true. With so much of recruiting based on trust and relationships, it is surprising BD has been able to keep the yarn spinning this long… particularly after burning so many bridges. Those articles should be mailed to every in-state recruit and every NC high school football coach in an umarked manilla envelope. It is public information… nothing wrong with that. .

As much as I get frustrated by some of TOB’s in-game decisions, you just couldn’t imagine a former player saying those sort of things about him. These are real kids with real hopes, dreams, and aspirations, and I am glad we don’t have a liar at the helm.

Heck, I will even bring up Dean Smith. I am as much of a Carolina-hater as anyone, and I am sure he wasn’t perfect, but I just can’t imagine him telling bold-faced lies like that. BD should be fired immediately.

44, I think is very close to being true. We are a play maker away on the defensive line.

  15. wolfpackdawg 11/15/2010 at 5:11 PM #

A pathological liar is the perfect fit @ UNC. It’s just a pathetic clique with Swofford leading the way.

  16. wvillepack 11/15/2010 at 5:12 PM #

Can anyone explain to me why we have only signed 8 recruits? Rivals.com ranks us last place in ACC. What’s going on? And unc has the #9 class in the nation.

Keep the discussion on topic. There is a thread on the forums to discuss NC State recruiting.

@Plz2BStateFan – I don’t think I will feel sorry for anyone that gets “caught” in that program if/when the hammer drops. If these guys had clean resumes, than sure, that might be warranted. But Butch Davis & John Blake? Is any sympathy due to folks putting their trust in that duo?

“They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into- I say, let ’em die.”

    Two more bite the dust!

    http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/story/8629276

Ramsey & McAdoo ruled permanently ineligible.

Isn’t Ramsey the one that played in a couple of Carolina’s wins this year? Can you say “vacated wins” kiddies?

  19. VaWolf82 11/15/2010 at 8:20 PM #

Can you say “vacated wins” kiddies?

Didn’t read the article, did you?

The NCAA enforcement staff will not require UNC to forfeit the two wins in which Ramsay participated in this year.

  20. Clarksa 11/15/2010 at 9:06 PM #

So here is a theory floated on the Wolfpacker boards…say UNC-CHeat self imposes a bowl ban this year. It would not affect incoming recruits so they could be telling the truth as long as the NCAA accepts that as part of their penalty and doesn’t add anymore post season bans…

  21. graywolf 11/15/2010 at 9:21 PM #

They commit, sign, Carolina gets put on probation and then wish they had done otherwise. Hope recruits wise up and realize that cheating is the Carolina Way and it will eventually catch up with you.

  22. packalum44 11/15/2010 at 11:23 PM #

^ I think recruits are released from their commitment if sanctions are subsequently imposed after signing. At least that is what I remember involving USC. By that time though you’re in love, its hard to break up with your cheating girl friend. Especially if she apologizes as well as Hayward:

I saw this article in the Fayetteville Observer this morning. The kid goes to Jack Britt High School. I hate it for him. I have heard he is a good kid, and I hate to hear him commit based a lie by the coaching staff. As I recall, We were put on probation because players were selling shoes and tickets. The NCAA determined that V knew nothing about this. The actions were solely those of the players, not the institution, and we received some stiff sanctions. Just sayin’….

I don’t what you guys want or expect from Big Chief Butchum. He’s doing the best he can with the situation in which he now finds himself.

Besides, it’s not his fault that sneaky ol’ John Blake inserted himself into that program and began sullying the reputation of that fine football institution. It’s not his fault that so many players traveled on the dime of agents and runners and nearly every player on the team knew about it but did not inform him. It’s not his fault that the tutor that was fired for being too close to at least one player and then subsequently hired by and paid for by him, then went behind his back and wrote term papers for 11+ players…

Wait, what was my point again? Oh yeah. You guys lay off Butch. He can’t help it if the facts keep changing!!!
