State 44, BC 17

Big win and an impressive response after the letdown last week. State is now 5-1 (2-1) and still controls its own destiny in the division.

Unlike last week, State took advantage of an early 10-0 lead and never let up, executing a solid gameplan that exploited BC’s focus on the run and they played a complete game on both sides of the ball and also on special teams. The Wolfpack racked up 422 yards in total offense, mainly through the air (347 yards). Russell Wilson completed 38-of-51 passes for 328 yards and three TDs (nevermind the two forced passes for interceptions), one each to Owen Spencer, Jarvis Williams, and Darrell Davis. Dontae Johnson blocked a punt and D.J. Green recovered for a touchdown on BC’s opening drive, and C.J. Wilson returned an interception 28 yards for a TD.

This was a well-coached and well-executed game.

A flat, blah, unspectacular kinda game. LB’s were the only unit that played well throughout. Nate had an obvious nice game, and Cole made a lot of nice ‘quite’ plays that didn’t garner him any stats.

Far from our best, but we still beat a conference opponent 44-17. Sandwiched between Va Tech and the rivalry game against ECU next week, quite understandable. I’ll happily take it. Nice win.

Gonna be a lot of points next week, so hoooooold on. Do we go with a nickel most of the game? I’m guessing we do.

Hot D@mn! South Carolina just scored again. Now up 14-3. Come ooooon Gamecocks! Need you to knock off them elephants. Gotta get Nebraska and/or Boise to the title game.

    [Edit]

One bad note, it looks like #48 Colby Jackson pulled a hammy on a kickoff… He may not be familiar to some of you, but he’s a key contributor on special teams. From my seats, it looked like he was the one who blocked the punt.

It might’ve been a cramp, but I don’t remember seeing him in the game after he pulled up grabbing the back of his thigh.

Can we please not perpetuate the myth that ECU is a rivalry game?

I hate that TOB did not take advantage of a great opportunity to get Glennon some game time. I guess he wants to have a raw untested player next year.

Ok…we’re pretty darn good! Didn’t even play all that well and we throttled them. There are a series of tough games left on the schedule but 8 wins, IMHO, is a minimum. It’s going to be fun.

Good win. Complete game finally, though still had the one busted coverage play, its starting to look like that will be something we just have to deal with this season.

I swear the second interception was not on Wilson. Looked like bad route running to me.

EDIT: TJ, just saw you said the same thing regarding routes in the forum. For me, the tell was the receiver seemed to give a look like he knew he screwed up. Something with his demeanor. The TV didn’t give a full field view though.

Such a reversal from last week, when it seemed every pass was 30+ yards down field, Today most passes were under ten yards.

Still very concerned with the defense and tackling the ball carrier. Also allowing receivers to get open, a good offense (which BC isn’t) is going to hurt us.

ECU isn’t great, but I worry about their offense and our D making mistakes. Need another 30+ on the board.

    I’m enjoying a nice win.

    Congrats on the big win!

Great game. I was getting nervous after we threw up 17 quickly to start the game again and then started to stall, but great finish to the game. I haven’t seen a wolfpack team this confident in a very long time.

“Can we please not perpetuate the myth that ECU is a rivalry game?”

Opinions vary. I doubt most here will say the satisfaction of today’s win over a conference opponent will equal the satisfaction of a victory over ECU next week.

Obviously, a conference win is more important in the bigger scope of things, but really, deep down, what is more satisfying? A victory over BC or a victory over ECU?

Or to put it another way, I doubt a loss to BC would create the same magnitude of negative emotion as would a loss to ECU.

ECU is a North Carolina FBS school chalk full of undeservedly arrogant SOB’s 2nd only to the Tarheels. Whether the teams are evenly matched or not, whether we dominate them or not, IMO, they qualify as a rival.

A victory over them is not nearly as fun when their expectations are low, but I thoroughly enjoy beating them when they expect to beat us, as I did in 2008 when they were ranked, and we were all getting to know our new freshman QB.

From the many threads and comments regarding ECU in the forums, I think it is safe to say I am not alone in this opinion.

I obviously think we are superior to ECU, but I’m not arrogant enough to be blinded and not recognize the natural rivalry created by the geographic proximately of the campus of another FBS school, and the high number of alums in and around the triangle, as well as throughout the state. Alums that many of us interact with everyday, in social and professional settings.

Man D last week, zone D this week.

Glad to see Glennon get some playing time. It feels great having RW playing like the RW of old and watching him make plays. Equally important is the fact that Glennon is ready to go when RW leaves and he is going to be VERY good! My gosh does he have a strong AND accurate arm. Looks like some good QB years are ahead of us even when RW leaves. I just hope Glennon can stay patient being 2 fiddle for now.

Great job today. We are finally on the right track this year.

  12. LRM 10/09/2010 at 6:04 PM #

I think the short passes were actually by design, to act as a pseudo-running game to open it up for the big play…which we never really needed today.

I just saw RW as part of the Heisman Update during the Bama-SC game. If State keeps winning, it’ll be near-impossible to ignore him any longer. I’m also curious how much attention he’s finally getting is due to the SID promoting him (*cough* Debbie Yow). Regardless, I don’t think he should’ve seen the field after we took the 41-10 lead.

  13. tjfoose1 10/09/2010 at 6:16 PM #

Yep. Short passes to our backs are pretty much part of our running game this year.

  14. wolfpackdawg 10/09/2010 at 6:40 PM #

Nice win. Lots of missed tackles on running plays. Gave up too many long runs. Beat ECU.

  15. PoppaJohn 10/09/2010 at 6:53 PM #

Great win, nice to get back on track.
Would have loved to see the coaching staff solve the run defense and get some meaningful yards on the ground – other than RW scrambles. Seems like they were the first team we could not run on.

ECTC will be pointing at this game, so we need to be prepared.

    GO PACK!

“Or to put it another way, I doubt a loss to BC would create the same magnitude of negative emotion as would a loss to ECU.”

Playing ECU is a no w”in proposition for us.
If we win, we should win, if we lose we lose to an inferior team.

It is short sighted for NCSU to call ECU a rivalry. It downplays us as a school.

  17. LRM 10/09/2010 at 7:13 PM #

At least Carolina had the foresight to schedule the series as a two-for-one rather than home-and-home like ol’ Lee did — they’ve played ECU at home the past two years.

  18. rky 10/09/2010 at 7:17 PM #

ECTC is no more a rival than Western Carolina. Go Pack!

  19. hoop 10/09/2010 at 7:22 PM #

    Congratulations to the football team!

Wolfpackers. If someone would have told you before the season you’d be 5 and 1 after 6 games, how ecstatic would you have been?

Probably about as ecstatic as we are now! Go Wolfpack and thanks to ESPN 3 for enabling me to watch them out here in AZ!

Great win, even though we made mistakes, as for beating ECU, if we play to our capabilities, it won’t be a problem, and to all those on the invincible Clemson tiger band wagon, I guess UNX had something to say about that. Our destiny is in our hands, we can beat everyone on the remainder of our schedule, including that team in Death Valley.

  21. Pack Mentality 10/09/2010 at 8:29 PM #

“It is short sighted for NCSU to call ECU a rivalry. It downplays us as school.”

I agree with you about the actual game on the field. But I think that their fanbase are dickheads of epic proportions. And they do live in the state so we do deal with them personally. So I think it is good to beat their ass every once in a while so that they know their place. It has nothing to do with elevating our football team, it is a personal thing. Now if we lose that really sucks, but I’m willing to take that risk…just not every year.

All this talk about a great win, a not a word on the Punting today? WTF? I thought Leffler had some amazing hangtime on a couple of his punts and netted good yardage as well. Glad to see this once glaring weakness starting to take shape!

  23. mak4dpak 10/09/2010 at 8:49 PM #

Again a great win, which means offense, defense, and special teams, it took a total team effort, and yes Leffler has been a big improvement over Ruiz. This win was a credit to the team.

  24. Texpack 10/09/2010 at 9:12 PM #

It’s been a long time since NC State took a huge lead into the 4th qtr of an ACC game and coasted home with a W. Very pleased with the outcome. Our tackling has to get better.

  25. WV Wolf 10/09/2010 at 9:17 PM #

Totally agree on Leffler, he has done a nice job since getting the starting nod. Glad to see the punt block unit becoming a weapon too.

Didn’t think we played bad but also think we didn’t play all that great either despite the margin of victory, at least offensively. BC is not very good at all. Would have rather seen Glennon get in a series sooner.

I only saw 5 wins before the season started and now we have 5 so in my book anything beyond this is gravy 🙂
