Mooneyham: Outrage missing in UNC scandal, Davis should be fired

FINALLY! Some common sense and opinion from some guy named Scott Mooneyham.

Welcome to the big time, Mr. Mooneyham. Please be prepared for private and public lynchings by the members of the secret society we have named, ‘The Flagship’. It is kind of like going up against ‘The Firm’. The last guy who spoke out against Carolina got this. Still no word on Joe Mavretic’s recent whereabouts, either.

😉

Mooneyham’s column is quick and concise, but at the same time complete. It MUST be read in its entirety.

Some select passages are included below:

The basic facts leave little doubt that what’s occurred is the worst college sports scandal to hit a UNC system school campus since a basketball point-shaving scandal of the early 1960s.

The response from some the school’s supporters seems to be that this kind of thing happens everywhere.

Really? I’m not aware of any athletic department tutors at other schools accused of wrongdoing who coincidentally were employed by the head football coach.

and

But in Chapel Hill, there’s no outrage to be seen.

Athletic Director Dick Baddour. He says the school’s internal review aims to “protect the integrity of the university.”

Does he mean the integrity that’s already disappeared on his watch, or any remaining integrity that slips away with each passing day that Butch Davis remains head football coach?

The school’s chancellor, Holden Thorpe, should fire Davis and Baddour. If he won’t, he should be fired.

There’s no reason to wait. None of the details, playing out day-by-day in the newspapers and on the Internet, are going to mitigate the fact that Davis and Baddour allowed the worst sports scandal in five decades to occur on their watch.

It’s not just the Carolina Way; it’s the only way.

UNC Scandal

This is absolutely 100% completely true, however, the Holier Than Thous are going to reply with their usual retort: “You’re just ABC and you’re only jealous!”

Jealous of their two Tire Bowl losses under Butch Davis?

Jealous of beating their superior team three years running?

Or jealous of the self-love that they have…the one that’s so strong that they must go through a bottle of hand lotion every other day?

    I don’t think so, Vinny.

No sir, I am not jealous one little bit of what I now know of “The Carolina Way.” Nor am I obsessed with UNC the way they like to claim. They are a rival, yes, so what happens there matters to the rest of us. And what’s happened there is dirty, rotten, festering malfeasance that’s being covered up and whitewashed by a UNC administration that’s not interested in ‘integrity.’

They are interested only in saving their own asses and protecting their precious football program. Academics, rules, fairness? They don’t matter as long as Carolina gets a national title in football.

With each passing day, it becomes clearer that UNC Football is as dirty as any program in the last 25 years or longer. The only difference between them and Southern Cal or SMU is that Carolina’s cheating got them nothing. Just shows how incompetent they are all around over there. Thorp, Baddour and Davis have NOTHING on the Three Stooges.

    And the pressure builds…

In Chapel Hll, if its negative, then “it never happened”: It’s “The Carolina Way”. N C State, 4-0, “THE RIGHT WAY”.

Carolina has shown that what matters to them is WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES, and sweeping as much as possible under the rug. They said initially that they would accept the NCAA’s decision, whatever it will be. Well, the NCAA ruled on two of their players, and did they accept it? No, they appealed it.

I still think Butch and/or Baddour will be gone at season’s end. But I think for now, they hope to win as many football games as possible so they can have a smooth transition to the new coach, whoever that ends up being. If they were honorable, they would fire Butch and Baddour now and just let the chips fall where they may. This would show that academics come first, and football is just a bonus. Since they aren’t, that is very telling as to where their priorities lie: Suffering as little damage as possible to their athletics programs.

Obviously not every athlete playing football at UNC is guilty. The really sad part is that the ones that are clean, have played by the rules and are committed to the game aren’t infuriated and letting that rage be known, because as long as this goes on every single one in a UNC jersey is being painted with the same brush.

That chick on the right is hot!

  7. GoldenChain 09/28/2010 at 9:53 AM #

Listening to the Mac Attack this morning in CLT and it is hilarious to hear the unx fans! You’d think State was 0-4 and lost to 1AA teams!
WIN, WIN, WIN …..(and cover up the dirt)
What’s it got ’em? 8 wins two years in a row.

  8. PackMan97 09/28/2010 at 9:54 AM #

“Are the standards of the University of Alabama the standards by which the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill now measures itself?

If so, Butch Davis should be fired for losing, not rule-breaking.”

    ———–

    LOL! So true.

  9. Alpha Wolf 09/28/2010 at 9:56 AM #

^ They probably 1) believe that their guys aren’t guilty and 2) are under orders to say nothing at all.

The Three Stooges might be talking to the press now, but it wasn’t too long ago they were claiming that they were under an NCAA gag order. I am sure that line of “logic” extended to their players and still does.

Privately, I would love to hear what the players and their parents are saying…the ones who are clean, going to school, and not going on agent trips. It would be something…

  10. PackisRolling 09/28/2010 at 10:15 AM #

this is spot on. I spent the weekend with UNC fans and only once did the UNC sccandal topic even come up. When it did, they dismissed it altogether and said it was “no big deal”. They said “so a tutor wrote some papers and some guys took some agent-paid trips…so what?”

I suggested that there is no way Butch is back next year. That was quickly dismissed with the reply “no one is even considering getting rid of Butch”. He built up so much goodwill that everyone loves him.

These are not “insiders” but are UNC grads who are very smart…I was simply amazed.

It should be noted that this fellow may have a reason for writing this article this week, given UNC’s next opponent is from Greenville… Whatever his inspiration is, his thoughts are correct. It starts small (usually from folks like Gregg Troll), but the calls for blood over in Chapel Hill will only get louder. Especially if they start winning games again.

A side note but for whatever reason, this whole thing makes me think of Judas Priests’ cover of The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown).

  12. UnclePen 09/28/2010 at 10:20 AM #

It’s going to take the entire season to complete this investigation. And if there is a bowl game, which is unlikely, the investigation will not be completed until after that.

Mooneyham says Thorpe should fire Baddour and Davis. I say Thorpe is also in the mix given his support for Butch after the big issues are clear. This one is wide AND deep.

  13. primacyone 09/28/2010 at 10:25 AM #

It’s starting to appear to me that Dicky Baddaour is trying to cover his own rear end and has something to hide. I can’t imagine anything different at this point, based on his actions and a good bit of his comments.

The more I think about it and how he is handling this, I am really starting to believe he has something to hide and is trying his best to cover his own rear end.

  14. packof81 09/28/2010 at 10:31 AM #

What a bunch of sleaze balls! They are intent on knitting butt covers for themselves. To hell with everything else. They are willing to drag down UNC CH and rest of the UNC system just to protect their own interests.

  15. Wufpacker 09/28/2010 at 10:31 AM #

You know who I really feel sorry for? The players who have been lifelong Carolina fans, maybe weren’t the best prospects but worked their asses off, barely got on scholarship or walked on, and became a part of something they’d loved their entire lives (childhoods).

They thought they’d won the lottery of sorts, and could live their lives content in knowing that for four years they were a part of the team and university they’d followed forever and would follow forever.

Now they’re a part of the team that will forever be associated with the scandal that stained the program for who knows how long.

If I was those guys, I’d want to do some major damage to Marvin and friends.

  16. Scooter 09/28/2010 at 10:52 AM #

^ I don’t feel a bit of pity for any of them. With as much hell as they’ve given us over the years, there is no conceivable reason to feel a thing but satisfaction.

What we would see from an ordinary institution would be that all those allegedly involved would be suspended pending the investigation, whereby the suspended individuals would either resign or be fired as incriminating evidence comes to light. I think the UNC administration thought they could contain the damage at first, so they offered support to Butch Davis and Friends. Now that this has gotten bigger and bigger, they are caught in a no-win. If they roll on Davis, he gives up the basketball program. If they keep him, they get condemned by the public. The dye, as they say, has been cast and they have to play the “protect the UNC family” game now.

They were either extremely arrogant in their initial approach or they have an ace in the hole that none of us know about.

  17. Wufpacker 09/28/2010 at 11:22 AM #

^ Not saying I feel sorry for UNC-CHeat in general. They brougth this on themselves and are now trying to weasel their way out. I’m enjoying this circus as much as anyone, more than most.

But I’m also not blind to the fact that there are some “innocent bystanders” here, so to speak. I know how I’d feel if by some miracle I could have walked on when I was at State, and then some dime store thugs came in and made a mess of my team and my school.

    That’s all I’m saying.

Now, that being said, I do want to see them get what they deserve, but I have suspicions they will not. I, as much as anyone, want to see the “Carolina Way” exposed for what it is, and what I believe it has long been….a facade, a PR campaign, etc.

  18. GoldenChain 09/28/2010 at 11:31 AM #

Well now guys, I just want to echo the words of another poster: “don’t forget all the ‘good things’ unx-xh has given us!”

    (LOL)

  19. GoldenChain 09/28/2010 at 11:34 AM #

Wuf, no doubt there is some ‘collateral damage’ but hey, those same kids could have had no problem playing DII ball somewhere on scholarship but they went for the Koolaid, perhaps given to them for years.
…sins of the father kind of thing.

  20. StateFans 09/28/2010 at 11:46 AM #

Come on guys!! EVERYBODY does it!

  21. Stillastatefan 09/28/2010 at 11:50 AM #

Mooneyham writes for the Capitol Press Association. His columns go out to papers across the state. It’ll be interesting to see how many run this one.

  22. GAWolf 09/28/2010 at 11:52 AM #

Wufpacker: Those kids have been sent packing via career ending injuries, early graduation and transfers.

FINALLY! Some common sense and opinion from some guy named Scott Mooneyham.

Scott Mooneyham was born in Raleigh and grew up in Wake and Durham counties. He is a graduate of N.C. State University, with bachelor’s degrees in English and political science. He began his journalism career at the Goldsboro News-Argus, then worked for the Fayetteville Observer before spending eight years at The Associated Press. At AP, he covered state politics and the legislature for six years. In 2004, Scott left the AP to become editor of The Insider State Government News Service (owned by the Raleigh News and Observer). Surprised no one had heard of him.

  24. NCStatePride 09/28/2010 at 11:57 AM #

I wonder how many of those kids, when they were recruited, didn’t see ANYTHING that seemed non-Kosher compared to other programs recruiting them.

  25. Stillastatefan 09/28/2010 at 12:02 PM #

A commenter on the Reflector is trying to say that Mooneyham is biased because he’s a State grad. Funny they don’t complain about all the UNC-CH journalism grads.
