A Glimpse at the Academic Focus of a UNC-CH Football Player

Here’s a statement that captures perfectly the academic attitude of some of Butch Davis’ UNC-CH football players:

Isn’t that awesome!  These guys are still posting this crap for the world to see!  Seriously, do they not think they have done enough damage already?  I don’t want them to stop of course, it is just amazing!

Showtime20UNC is, of course, the Twitter handle for UNC-CH running back Shaun Draughn and he is tweeting with a friend of his who plays at Virginia Tech.  Obviously, Draughn does not take his education seriously.  Maybe he can afford to have that attitude because he is a can’t-miss future NFL superstar!!!

Think about your own college career.  More than likely, you had a strategy for taking the classes you would need to finish your major and complete your degree, and it’s also probable that you knew who was teaching what class in order to take classes from professors you liked and worked well with, and at the same time, you probably avoided others.  Even as a freshman, you probably knew the names of your courses and after a couple of classes what your professor’s name was, right?

Not “Public Ivy” student Draughn.

We have to ask — seeing as how he does not even know what classes he is taking – is Draughn getting a lot “help” with his schoolwork from Butch Davis’ nanny or someone similar?

Are we starting to find out how UNC-CH has kept an implausible number of guys eligible through the years?  I mean, if this guy does not know what classes he is taking and is eligible (and makes a joke of his UNC-CH education for the world to see), doesn’t that say a lot?

I feel like I am getting drunk with every new piece of news that surrounds this team…or maybe that’s the celebratory liquor…

Who cares?! These idiots deserve the smack-down.

In defense of a college kid…it always takes a few weeks to get jump started into the semester…but you’re right, there is no way in hell anyone on the football team should have an active twitter account right now.

Does it take a few weeks to know what classes you are taking?

  4. GAWolf 08/26/2010 at 10:52 PM #

Long before registration I always knew the classes the football players were taking… as I tried my damnedest to get in them.

Ahhh…Shaun “Fumbles” Draughn who brought us this gem from Butchie after the NC State game.

“We have a new rule in the UNC locker room…. NO MORE VASELINE”

That is another UNC-ch student athlete who takes his education seriously.

  7. coach13 08/27/2010 at 9:12 AM #

I hope the NCAA calls him in immediately and ask him what he’s taking and where his classes are…ask for a tour. It would be funny as hell if he couldn’t do it!!!

Greg Barnes says it might be double digits. XD

Here is something to share with your UNC Friends….I just got an email that I had to “doctor up” and change the names and events in….it sums up, IMHO, the whole situation.

In modern day UNC Land, Butch Davis was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day an acquaintance ran up to him excitedly and said, “Butch, do you know what I just heard about Marvin Austin?”

“Wait a moment,” Butch replied, “Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”

    ‘Triple filter?” asked the acquaintance.

“That’s right,” Butch continued, “Before you talk to me about Marvin, let’s take a moment to filter what you’re going to say.

The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

“No,” the man said, “Actually I just heard about it.”

“All right,” said Butch, “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about Marvin something good?”

    “No, on the contrary…”

“So,” Butch continued, “You want to tell me something about Marvin that may be bad, even though you’re not certain it’s true?”

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Butch continued, “You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about Marvin going to be useful to me?”

    “No, not really.”

“Well,” concluded Butch, “If what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me or anyone at all?”

Obviously, Dick Baddour was bewildered and ashamed and left dejected. This is an example of why Butch was compared to Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, and was held in such high esteem by the UNC followers.

POSTSCRIPT….It also explains why Butch never found out that his teenage son’s Tutor was writing papers for his son and Marvin Austin and why he never figured out that Marvin was being treated to “perks” paid for by sports agents and Ex-UNC NFL players….not to mention the REAL reason his assistant coach was call the “Black Santa”……

Funny, Greg Barnes (Idiot Central) was on the Mac Attack in CLT @ 8:45 this morning.
What amazed me is that he claimed that unx would not get punished by the NC2A over the academic stuff. Said that unx would do a ‘self-punishment’ that would be worse than anything the MC2A could do.
    REALLY?!
I might let my best friend copy some homework…once. I might help him on a paper if he was going to get disenroled but write papers for at least 9 players? Who knows how many times? No way.
…..unless I was getting paid to do their work.

Lack of institutional control? I thin so.

  11. choppack1 08/27/2010 at 10:58 AM #

Regarding “lack of institutional control” – I’ve always thought of that as the “owners of the store” not minding the employees of said store enough.

For example, in its NC State investigation, the NCAA found that we didn’t have the proper institutional controls because we weren’t minding how our athletes were using their complimentary tickets and extra shoes. They found no direct wrongdoing by the Coaches or athletic administrators or faculty.

However, in the worst case scenario – that Butch knew about this OR that let’s say Blake was facilitating improper contacts/payouts – you have infractions that rise above “minding the store.” I don’t think it will come to that – but that scenario is still on the table in a developing investigation.

In a case like that – it would (or at least should) – rise above the “institutional control” problem. Rather, the problem IS the institution itself. For the above example of the store – you’d have some of the managers of the store – encouraging, enabling and/or assisting the employees in wrong doing.

These guys just aren’t getting it. Draughn would run until he puked if I were Coach. Then told if he EVER tweeted ANYTHING EVER AGAIN as a player at UNC he’s off the team instantly.

  13. TheAliasTroll 08/27/2010 at 11:32 AM #

LOL too funny. He doesn’t know what classes he is enrolled in? What a dumb ass.

  14. Lunatic Fringe 08/27/2010 at 11:36 AM #

Let’s not miss the most important part of the comments by Greg Barnes.

Barnes also stated that he did not think that the academic infractions would have been uncovered if the NCAA had not been investigating the Heels, “Just because it really took a player tipping them off to a former employee that used to do some things for the players academically. That’s basically what it comes down to, unless somebody would have spilled the beans North Carolina’s administration would have never known about it.”

^^ It is one thing to have “institutional reviews/processes/controls” that find these issues and “self report” it is another completely different thing to have the NCAA do the UNC’s compliance review for them and FIND the issues.

  15. TheAliasTroll 08/27/2010 at 11:42 AM #

David “crappy radio show host” Glenn probably thinks this is all some kind of a racial conspiracy.

  16. packof81 08/27/2010 at 12:04 PM #

This NCAA investigation certainly has drug on. It will be interesting to see the results. The season is nigh upon us.

As for the tweet above, obviously the player who wrote it didn’t think anything would come of the tweet. In addition to not taking his education seriously, he apparently doesn’t think posting messages about it publicly is a bad idea.

It’s all about getting in the NFL. Nothing else matters.

If they don’t get the death penalty at this point, who’s supposed to????
