Russell Wilson Drafted in the 4th Round (Updated 8:00)

Developing and also discussed here.

Russell Wilson was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 4th Round/140th Pick.

Apparently, the Rockies love some ACC Quarterbacks as Kyle Parker was drafted earlier.

Some interesting Tweets:

MikeBart1434 played against NC State’s Russell Wilson, he is a freak athlete played 4 diff positions against us, also QB for football team #mlbdraft

grittree RT @FSUROCKER: That’s two #ACC QBs for the #Rockies. Kyle Parker first, then Russell Wilson. #MLBDRAFT

brandonmac51 Colorado is loading up on quarterbacks in the #MLBDraft.. Wait, did that make sense?

johnmanuelba Wow, stunned the Rockies pop NC State 2b/of Russell Wilson. He’s also the QB, has flashed hitting tools, but that’s a stunner #mlbdraft

Update (2:45): An hour later and GoPack.com is still silent

Update (8:00): Wilson calls Coach O’Brien to say he will be on the field in August. GoPack.com finally gets in on the action. But c’mon really? In my opinion, this is just leverage against the Rockies… I don’t think we’ll see Russell play another snap (or pitch) for the Wolfpack.

    What the…?

Sorry, but I don’t normally follow MLB. Do 4th round picks usually go?

Better start warming up your arm Mr. Glennon.

  3. tobaccordshow 06/08/2010 at 2:23 PM #

Tiew – considering that this selection is as high as RW will probably ever go, I don’t see him not taking this.

What the F?? This for a guy who couldn’t crack the lineup for a middling (at best) ACC team? I would imagine he’ll take whatever offer the Rockies make and will hope to do so before they come to their senses. So long RW, it was fun watching you play for 2 years and best of luck. This probably makes our upside 3 wins now instead of 5 or 6. Maybe best for the long run since I don’t think TOB will be able to enter Purgatory Land this year and we can just move on.

Wow. That’s a shocker. Of course, this was also a reason why I didn’t see the value in redshirting him. I figured he’d only be hear 3 years.

It will be interesting to see if he comes back. I doubt it- being drafted in the 4th round in baseball is the equivalent of being drafted in 1st round of football. Technically, he can still play football unless that rule has changed.

I can see why someone wouldn’t think he’d be drafted. However, scouts are looking at things totally different than most baseball fans.

140th pick is not going to be offered any big time contract. I imagine Wilson will be at NCSU next year.

MLB teams certainly draft on potential but it is very rare for a college jr who can’t crack the starting lineup on a decent college team to go this high. Typically the “draft on potential” factor is less with college jr’s because they are already 3 years older and you’ve had a much better look at them against good competition.

I just can’t figure out what all the fuss is about re: Wilson and baseball. Even with aluminum bats and against college pitching he has basically been a slap-hitting outfielder with decent speed. His SB% is nice (9/10) and he has a good eye (.443 OBP this year) but his avg and slugging are middling for college and he strikes out a lot too boot. They clearly aren’t drafting him as a pitcher. If he were a really slick fielding middle infielder then that may change things a little but he hasn’t shown that either. Any chance they thought they were drafting Kyle Wilson? He’s a much better baseball player at this point in their careers.

It depends on your definition of “big time”. He likely won’t see millions, but last year’s 140th pick (Chris Rusin) got $140K.

So it’s still significant money for people living in the real world.

    Paging Noah and his expertise…

  10. fvpackman 06/08/2010 at 3:15 PM #

He will be gone…the 140k was for a 1 sport player…MLB has a different set of numbers for 2 sport stars…Just look at Brackman….Russ will get 450 to 800k….he has already graduated….

  11. Dr. BadgerPack 06/08/2010 at 3:20 PM #

FV- The 140K was also for a senior, so combining the 1 year of eligibility with the dual sport, he could conceivably approach 7 figures.

The other option is to try to shave some bonus money by allowing Wilson to play football in the fall.

Samardzija got a million as a fifth rounder a while back.

It just depends on WHY Colorado made this pick. Insurance for Parker? A way to save $ to sign Parker? A throwaway?

If they like Wilson, I have a hard time believing they could not have waited a few more rounds. So, there has to be something else there.

4th round last year ranged from 120k to 1.2 mil….RW will be north of 500k could be 1 Mil …He has all the leverage he can have this year….another year of College Baseball and 2 years of football….I think he has played his last game at NC State in any sport.

I just hope that he doesn’t drag out contract negotiations until well into fall practice before deciding to bolt. That will put everyone in a very delicate spot. It was bad enough when Trot Nixon did it and he was probably going to redshirt regardless. If he’s going to leave (and I assume he will) I hope he goes ahead and makes the move now. We can all just move on then.

  15. Dr. BadgerPack 06/08/2010 at 3:28 PM #

Par- It can’t drag out too long. August 16th is it.

Overall, this is nothing but good news for NC State.

#1. We get a two sport athlete drafted quite high in the MLB draft. This will assure him of a nice signing bonus with his leverage pretty darn high this year. Good for him…his family…and for the school.

#2. We perhaps will finally get to see what TOB has to offer to NC State without his assisted walker (RW) this season.

  18. Par Shooter 06/08/2010 at 3:56 PM #

If he waits until 8/15 to make a decision then it will be quite a distraction for the first 2 weeks of fall camp and will put Bible/TOB in quite a pickle if he wants to practice with the team. I guess they would declare it an open competition and split the reps more or less equally which runs the risk of wasting a bunch of reps on RW. They can’t really name Glennon the starter while this is still hanging out there because it could be seen as pushing RW away. But you can’t name RW the starter and spend all your focus on getting him ready either. If we start fall camp with this still up in the air then it’s just one more distraction that we don’t need.

  19. fvpackman 06/08/2010 at 4:02 PM #

I think they sign him in a matter of week’s…it will keep them from having to pay Parker so much…

    Trot Nixon, anyone?

Didn’t UNC-CH’s Mike Thomas figure the rule to the point where he got paid to play minor baseball and still got to start at quarterback for the Tarheels?

  21. choppack1 06/08/2010 at 4:28 PM #

He did – he was with the Orioles I think.

Deon Sanders was also w/ the Yankees.

I don’t know enough about the baseball draft to comment on how the organization sees their 4th round picks – but football teams really place a lot of value on them (and they have more players on a roster.)

RW is definitely a “potential” pick. He couldn’t stay in the starting line-up for an NCAA bubble team. My personal business acumen says that this is absolutely an insane pick for the Rockies to throw lots of money at…but they’ve already pulled the trigger and if you are picking someone in the 4th round – chances are you, you want them badly.

It will be real interesting. Technically RW – has 2 more years of football eligibility left. If he likes football – he’ll have the chance to play here or in Canada – as early as next year.

He’s proven himself an absolute stud on the football field. We’re talking about a guy who if stays 4 would have his name in the record books. I don’t think he’s staying 4 years – now I’ll be surprised if he’s back this year.

I say good luck Russell in whatever you decide to do. He has been nothing but a positive for NCSU and I wish we had more athletes just like him.

Just heard he was coming back??

Does someone in the Colorado org have UNC ties? 😉
