We love us some Toney Baker

If you don’t officially follow us on Twitter (Link to SFN Page) then we hope that you have noticed that we have added a Twitter plug-in to both the blog and our Message Forums. We hope that you are recognizing and appreciating the volume of ‘real-time’ news and updates (and fun) that we share through the Twitter platform.

Earlier today, you would have noticed the news that NC State’s Toney Baker (deservedly) won the ACC’s prestigious Brian Piccolo Award as the most courageous player in the ACC. You can watch a quick interview with Toney and ESPN’s Heather Dinich by clicking here.

She asks him about his 6th year of eligibility and he says that (paraphrased): “right now I have sent something into the NFL to see where I am projected to go and we will have to see”.

How much do Wolfpackers want Toney back and how important could he be to NC State?

Well, this thread on the Forums was started just a couple of hours after the Wolfpack’s big win over North Carolina last Saturday – “Cross Your Fingers That Baker and Wilson Stay”

I hope TB comes back, but if he doesn’t, that means he’s getting good feedback from the NFL. That being the case, my unselfish side hopes that TB won’t return for one more year. He’s definitely due for some good breaks his way… Either way, here’s to wishing him the best.

How can you not love Toney Baker. I know all of us would love to see #22 back in the Red and White next fall, but after discussing with his family, etc., if going into the draft is what he thinks is best for him then more power to him.

I wish him luck with whichever option he decides is best for him and his family, and if that choice is to return for his final year of eligibility with the Pack then I know a lot of us will be thrilled.

I have to wonder how much of his decision making is/will be based upon expectations of how good the team will be next year.

I’m just very glad that Toney has options. That’s such a big advantage should the painfully objective NFL observers feel that they haven’t seen enough. For me, he showed a ton this year; hands and power and some good burst.

Though he’d really help our 2009 team, whatever move he makes will be fine with me.

Toney was the most pleasant surprise in Red & White for me in some time. I was highly doubtful about his ability to unseat Eugene as the starter, and his first carry of the season only supported that doubt.

From there, he simply got better every single game, turning into a true workhorse, able to both beat guys with speed and bowl them over with power.

Thanks for a great season, Toney… my best to you next year, whether with a Wolfpack or an NFL helmet on your head.

When I hear the term “moral character,” Tony is one of the first people who come to mind. Much was said on the Wolfpack boards during his recruitment by people who knew him personally about how really good a person he is beyond being a very talented football player. I think that’s been born out from the day he stepped on campus, as well as his having a strong faith in God. And then to see how he’s handled the adversity of his injuries, and come back to make major contributions on the field, bears out how deserving he is of this award. I can’t think of anyone who is as deserving this year as Tony, and wish him the very best in football and otherwise as he goes forward. While I do not consider athletes in general to be good role models, there are some athletes who are, and Tony is one of them IMO. He’s been a shining representative of, not only NCSU, but his family and himself as well! CONGRATULATIONS, TONY!!
