Sunday Update
The run is over and the drought continues as the Wolfpack soccer team was shut out by the Virginia Cavaliers, 1-0, in today’s ACC Championship game. State’s soccer team last appeared in the Championship game and won a title in the 1990 season. A third of the Wolfpack’s team this season – that finished 7th in the ACC – is comprised of seniors.

Congratulations to the NC State men’s soccer team!!!

The NC State’s Men’s Soccer program that wandered the ACC wilderness for the better part of the last TWENTY YEARS is finally making some waves in 2009!! (Link)

Seventh-seeded N.C. State scored an early goal and withstood a late charge by Boston College to blank the third-seeded Eagles, 1-0, Friday night in the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park. The Wolfpack became the first No. 7 seed to advance to the championship game since Virginia did so in 1999.

The Wolfpack advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1990, when State defeated Virginia to win its only ACC Championship. The 15th-ranked Wolfpack will face fifth-seeded Virginia in the ACC Championship Game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Congrats boys. This is a huge victory. Way to lock up a bid (and probably a decent seed) to the NCAA tournament. Now lets go win an ACC championship!

  2. RDUWolf Says:

State has one of the top up-and-coming assistant coaches in the country in Dan Popik. Here’s hoping he gets a serious hard look for the job when Coach Tarantini decides its time to move on.

  3. Dr. BadgerPack Says:

It really speaks to conference depth when you are the seventh freaking seed in your conference and ranked fifteenth nationally. Sheesh.

Good job boys. Keep up the good work. GO PACK!

  4. Dogbreath Says:

Rah rah rhee, kick em in the knee. Rah rah rass, kick em in the other knee.

  5. graywolf Says:

Great to see. Widman, the goal keeper, is a Ragsdale soccer product and very good student.

Anyone else refusing to get excited, knowing that it’ll just lead to disappointment in the end?

For reference, my freshman year was the fall of 1989. That’s right. I’m the jinx.

SFN: My freshman year was the fall of 1989, as well. I’m betting I’m the jinx.

  7. seanb724 Says:

I certainly remember the 1989 season. I played with the team that spring when they had “spring tryouts.” Not really try outs, since there were 7 spots for the fall and 7 incoming scholarship players…

I was way over my head, but had a blast. Got to play with Tab Ramos who was taking time from his pro career to practice with the team, and against Henry Guitierrez, 2 time 1st team all American. Tarantini had me kicking corner kicks to practice set plays — about the only thing I was good enough to do. :-/

Anyway, after that time, and how good the team played that next year, I was pysched and thought we’d be a soccer power house for years to come.

I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I’m glad to see us finally competitive in the countries best soccer conference.

Wolfonthehill: my birth year is 1983… I’m the ultimate jinx.

  9. Alpha Wolf Says:

It would be awesome for the soccer team to come through and win a title. Even better, it would be awesome to seem the vault into the NCAA and make some loud noise there.

Let’s go Pack, get it done!

  10. El Lobo Loco! Says:

About time they get a title!!
    Virginia again? deja-vu

  11. wolfonthehill Says:

Tried to get my 8-year-old twin boys to go the championship with me today… no luck & no TV here… and apparently no one sending reports here from Cary?

  12. StateFans Says:

    …wait til next year…or the next year…or the next…

  13. Ed89 Says:

1-0 in the semis and 0-1 in the final. Too bad we lost, but 2 goals scored total in two games. Soccer is one exciting sport.

No offense to the real soccer fans out there, but I’m more worried about the fact that we totally suck in all revenue sports.

  14. LKNpackfan Says:

Tough loss. UVA hasn’t given up a goal in 8 games….

Silver lining is that the team may have played themselves into the NCAA’s.

  15. tulsapack Says:

Brackets are up. We are seeded and get a first-round bye, playing at home against the winner of Portland and New Mexico on Sunday; a win there and we will go on to meet, almost certainly, Virginia.

  16. vtpackfan Says:

I hope we get a large crowd for that 2nd round NCAA game. I was able to attend the finals in Cary this weekend and loved the amount of Pack faithful that were able to attend.

3,500 in attendance and you can guess that we put fannies in the stands and made the ACC happy with the revenue. Just wish we could have tied it up and gone to extra time because momentum was gaining in our favor in the 2nd half.

Here is an article of the game with so close up pictures taken:
