As resident SFN Statistician, WV Wolf, posted much fo the following on our message boards this weekend:
NC State’s Men’s Cross Country team won the ACC Championship this weekend. (Link to ACC.com)
This is State’s first ACC Title since winning the ACC Wrestling Championship on March 3, 2007; spanning a stretch of 973 days.
In the 56 years since the formation of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953, NC State had never experienced such a drought between team titles. In fact, until the last two years, the NC State Athletics Department had never experienced two consecutive academic years without winning a team championship.
But, Lee Fowler’s Department continues to set all sorts of historical records for NC State Athletics! With this said, you must read the ‘Unholy Trinity’ article from last week as a complement to this entry.
‘Classof89′ posted a little perspective of the championship on our message boards.
My first impression on hearing the news was “well, they always win, don’t they?” But in fact, Pack men were only barely in the national top 30, behind three other ACC teams. So this is, in fact, a clutch performance…
When we historically post comments regarding the ‘strength’ of the Wolfpack’s cross country, rifle and gymnastics programs we typically make some facetious comments about the importance of our ‘fuhcilities’ to generate this success – obviously there is something pretty special about the forests in and around Raleigh. Today, we will highlight the fantastic comments from fvpackman on the forums:
To think we spent 100 mil on “fuhclities” as Uncle Jed would say. And all we needed was a 50 acre patch of woods…I have a 1st class cross country facility in my backyard….I could have kept all those thousands I gave for Football,Basketball and Baseball…What a fool I have been .
Lastly, in typical fashion, Gopack.com can’t seem to count. Their story reads “NC State, which won its 14th men’s championship” when this is actually the men’s 15th ACC Title. Gotta love it.
Post-script #1: We try to be as absolutely accurate and frame information with as wide of a lense as possible. Please note that NC State won a gymnastics championship last year; but please note that is NOT an ACC sport. Similarly, Rifle won a SEARC championship (and finished last in the GARC).
Post-script #2: As far as the error of 14 titles vs 15 titles — the article on the ACC’s website has the error as does the Gopack.com story (which also ended up in the N&O). It’s sad when a fan with an excel file has better data than the SID.
