Not sure how to draw a whole lot of conclusions. We’re on the “uptick” as compared to Carolina since TOB arrived. If you throw out our low and Carolina’s low, the gap gets worse. I’d speculate that if you dump a couple of the Division II’s, the SOS would jump dramatically. I guess we probably lost ground even beating the Div II national champ??
Duke’s surprises me a bit, but that’s probably cause I haven’t paid much attention to them. ECTC’s is what I would expect.

Maybe they should give out a mythical sagrin national championship. Difficult thing about SOS, college football schedules are often set many years in advance. It’s not like basketball. Tough to control the epp and flow of programs as prominent national powers. A little over a decade ago I never would’ve seen Syracuse as a weak sister or Rutgers as a factor on the national scene. Another factor is conference competition. You could be a great program but get ‘waxed’ by 3-4 conference opponents competing in the top-ten in the country (SEC). Or– you could trounce your entire division of weaker teams— and still get no respect nationally unless you find a way to wiggle into a decent bowl opportunity. Utah and Alabama bowl game last season would be a good example. On the whole, SOS is a good indicator of the level of competition in-conference—- more than anything else.

So the past three years, our schedule has been tougher than our average and UNC’s has been easier than their average. Also the past two years, our schedule has been tougher than UNC. You can twist numbers all sorts of ways.

Last year Duke played JMU, Northwestern, Navy and Vandy out of conference plus Clemson, WF and us from the coastal division. You wouldn’t think that is the 6th toughest schedule in the nation. I guess they get credit for not having awful teams on their schedule, but that should change this year since they play both Richmond and NC Central.

I can’t remember how many people we had back out over the last few years and how many are coming up but we have had a lot of teams drop us and we’ve been left to schedule whoever we could. It might be that way for a lot of people but it seems like teams are still willing to play UNC-CH. (I wonder why? *chuckle*)

What jumps out to me is the numbers for ECU. Their fans, coaches & even some in the media love to talk about they willingness to play anybody, anywhere. That is easy to do when you have a cushy 8 game conference schedule in Conference Sorriest Teams in the USA.

NC State has never played Div 2 teams.
We have played 1AA, now known as FBS, teams…but never Division 2.
App St was 1AA/FBS Champion.

Duke is a perfect example of how being lousy can help your own SOS. Duke can’t play themselves…heck for many ACC teams, they were only conference game w/ a team w/ a losing regular season record.
I really hate our schedule this year. IMHO, we’ve set up ourselves up for criticism if we have a strong year w/ the 2 D-AA opponents. If we do have a good year, I’d be interested to see if an ignorant media criticizes us for our OOC. (I think that any time you play an SEC team and a Big East team, you’ve done a pretty decent job.)
As for UNC, I wouldn’t criticize them. They are quite frankly, getting the gigs that we want…and they did beat both the Domers and Sorrycuse.

Not matter how you want to PC’it, Division II is Division II. Second rate! Unworthy! You an App St cool aid drinker?
And if ECU is so bad, App State is twice as bad! That’s why they call it Division II!
