Mass Exodus

It will probably take a while to process all of this week’s activity once all of the chips fall (Gerald Henderson?)…but, we didn’t want to ignore all of the recent developments that will have a huge impact on the ACC/College Basketball landscape next season. (By the way, we already began discussing next year’s college basketball roster in this great entry that you shouldn’t miss.)

Before today day really got started the N&O provided us an update on these hoops transactions and as the day has evolved Maryland’s program may have taken another hit as Greivis Vasquez announced he will enter his name into the NBA Draft but will not sign with an agent.

Just down the road the Tar heels lost Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington (one year too late!) By the way…am I the only person who remembers this stink from last year that happened shortly after Lawson encountered legal issues related to drinking and driving?

Without Lawson and Ellington — plus seniors Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Green — UNC starts over next season without its top four scorers.

Williams managed a similar roster overhaul, after winning the 2005 title and losing four first-round picks, by winning 12 ACC games. The two recruiting classes after the ’05 title were the foundation for this year’s title team.

The Heels appear to be in a similar reloading mode with four new McDonald’s All-Americans poised to join the program.

It will be interesting to see how all of these changes impact the projections for next season.

Of other regional interest is Davidson’s Stephon Curry heading to the NBA.

Carolina just reloads their impressive arsenal. Even Duke struggles to keep up.

    That is the truth Alpha.
I expect them to win several more championships as long as Roy is there. It is actually very impressive.

No matter who leaves those schools,we will still lag far behind with this current brain trust.

you dont think Josh Davis can handle Ed Davis?

Granted there have been some bad misses by the current staff but I think we should give Josh Davis a chance to prove himself one way or the other. I would say it is 50/50 that he becomes a decent role player, but if he can come in and replace Simon Harris, that will be good enough for me.

Just curious…how did you arrive at “50-50″?

Hence you have the comedy that was the issue of Ty Lawson’s toe and all the “woe is us” whining from the Carolina program and fans. Does it really matter if a McDAA gets hurt when there are two on the bench waiting to take his place?

An area HS coach that coached against Josh said that he was solid athletically, but needed stronger fundamentals. I am hopeful that with enough reps in practice and some garbage time to get himself some game film that he can be taught to be at least a solid defender.

Basically, Noah, I am trying to be optimistic.

Also, a big thanks to Jeff for putting “Exodus” by Bob Marley on repeat inside my head. ;-)

I take my last comment back. We’ve had some McDAA’s that allow me to answer my own question.

    Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true.
    You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ‘em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

It’s hard to make any definitive conclusions until we see who ends up coming back. Wake and Maryland are really in limbo right now.

“you dont think Josh Davis can handle Ed Davis?”

We will never find out. By the time Josh gets on the floor Ed will be averaging 8 and 4 in the NBA.

Alpha, I’m not one who follows all the recruiting news but aren’t there “some bad misses” by all the schools? What makes a miss, a “bad” miss?

A bad miss is when a guy who should never have gotten a scholarship — GETS a scholarship and then spends four years sitting on the bench pulling for his teammates.

It’s NFL Draft Weekend. I *LOVE* the NFL draft. I like it more than the Superbowl. When I was in sixth grade, I skipped school so I could stay home and watch it (it was on a Wednesday then).

Inevitably, they will talk about the draft-day busts. IMO, there are two kinds of draft-busts: 1) The guy who everyone thinks is a star, but comes up short, and 2) The guy that NO ONE thinks is a star and comes up short.

The first one is excusable, the second gets you fired. Steve Emtman and Quinton Coryatt were the first kind. Everyone thought they were going to be good, but injuries kept them from having good careers. Happens to everyone.

Kelly Stouffer is the second kind. He was supposed to be a very late-round pick and the Cardinals took him #6 overall because they didn’t want to spend the money on a signing bonus for a rookie.

Josh Davis is the second kind of bad recruit.

Now replacing Simon Harris is a priority?

“you dont think Josh Davis can handle Ed Davis?”

I don’t I haven’t seen Josh play but he did average 25 a game. Just with what’s been shaping up it looks like the ACC is up for grabs next year. Starting lineup next will look like this:

    PG: Julias Mays
    SG: Lorenzo Brown
    SF: CJ Williams
    PF: Dennis Horner
    C: Tracy Smith

    playing minutes

    PG: Gonzales, Degand
    SG: Scott Woods
    SF: Johnny Thomas, Scott Wood
    PF: Richard Howell
C: I hope Sid can get another big man

I’m think Woods and Brown are going to score in the double digits.
We just need Smith, Horner, Mays to do the same..

“Now replacing Simon Harris is a priority?”

i was thinking the exact same thing. the Simon Harris thing made sense at the time because we had 6 scholarship players and Simon was only going to be around 2 years. the Josh Davis thing makes no sense. Just giving scholarships out in year 4 for the sole purpose to fill the roster is not a good sign. Also, if Sid felt he had any legitimate chance at landing a better player, he would not have offered Josh Davis. The fact that Davis got an offer speaks volumes abuot Sids mentality at this point.

Which will come in handy when we play Enloe High School.

I’m not going criticize Sid for giving a ‘ship to Josh Davis. From what I know about North Carolina players who average those kind of #s, these guys can contribute w/ the right kind of coaching.

It is worth noting (and I did so on the last thread) that Davis is Sid’s 13th recruit. He has plenty of bodies this upcoming year (and he’s had them the last 2.)

This year will tell us tons about Sid. A good coach will capitalize on a conference that is likely going to be the weakest its been in a long time. UNC has to replace for all-conference starters. Wake is losing the only player who could put the ball in the basket their last 10 games of the season, UMd might as well.

You fellows are reading too much into the Simon Harris comment I made. My point was if Davis grows into a lesser-role player but still has some value, then I am fine by that.

I don’t have enough info to defend Josh at this point. I hear comparisons to Marcus Melvin, but Marcus had range, I haven’t heard that about Josh. But I will tell you I am very big on kids who WANT to come to state, I like kids that are going to kill themselves to get into the lineup. I’m told Josh is one of those kids.

Thinkpack – that’s why I say, I think this kid can be a player w/ proper coaching. I’m not sure if he’s got the right teachers to develop that…but if we stink, hopefully, that will change next year.

It appears that almost everyone who could leave, is leaving.

Huge opportunity for the team next year. Gives me even more reason to think that Lowe can and should make a big step forward next year with his guys.

    No excuses next year.

Seems like some folks will criticize every decision Sidney makes, just because they don’t think he’s done a good job. Trashing an incoming recruit that you’ve never seen play is stupid and unfair to the kid. Not every recruit is going to be a superstar. I’m sure the coaching staff saw something they liked in Davis and feel he can be a contributor to the program. It’s not like he’s the headline recruit this season. We have a good class coming in.

“I want to make a name for myself. I want to be one of the best players in the nation. I also want to bring some of the best players in the nation to NC State with me. I know that if I can play with, against, or in front of the best players in the nation that I can get some of them to come with me.” -Ryan Harrow

It looks like he is still very much committed to State. We need to get him on the phone with CJ Leslie. Well sign him first…then get him on the phone with Leslie.

I remember Carolina’s national championship team, in 1993 (I think), had some stiffs on the roster, who rarely saw the floor, like Serge Zwikker and Matt Wenstrom. Worrying about why the 12th player on the depth chart was given a scholarship or isn’t getting minutes isn’t a big concern, unless the other 11 guys ahead of him aren’t able to play worth a damn.

I don’t expect much from Davis early on, but give him a couple of years to see if he can develop. I also wonder if the staff has doubts about Johnny Thomas being able to fully recover from his knee injury next year or if they expect he’d still have soreness issues, which is why they got another athletic player in Davis, who’d play in a similar position.

Per Noah’s rating of draft day players, there’s a third kind (3) the player, who has potential, but takes a few years to adjust to the next level or land in the right situation. Thomas Jones made the Pro-Bowl last year, but looked like a bust early in his career.

I hoping Davis will fit into catagory three. I don’t expect immediate contributions from him, but hope he can contribute later in his career.
