NC State’s AD views his program as home to athletes not good enough to get scholarships from SEC schools

Tuesday we ran a damning numbers-centric entry regarding Lee Fowler’s Athletics Department. Today, we thought we would just throw out a few interesting items and insight that evolve more from recent off-the-field developments.

“The Mind of Lee Fowler”
One of SFN’s all-time greatest entries was written over four years ago by Michael Byrne. The essay – The Mind of Lee Fowler – was written in the heart of the Sendek years and does an amazing job of outlining a lot of the key points at the time, including Fowler’s multiple attacks and disparaging remarks on/about the NC State fanbase.

Sidenote: How did that strategy work out for Fooler when the basketball job opened and he needed to market the job? Mr. Simpleton has never never been able to look forward and understand the future consequences of his actions, comments and behaviors. Did it ever register with him or his bosses that Tom O’Brien pursued NC State’s football coaching job publicly and privately citing the strong support and great fanbase that Fowler has disparaged for years? Has anyone ever noticed that Coach O’Brien has never once highlighted NC State’s strong leadership as one of his factors for coming to the school?

You really HAVE to go back and read that entry. Byrne’s essay moves from table-setting to a valiant attempt to explain how past events in Fowler’s career have married with his egotistical personality to develop his administrative ‘philosophies’.

Lack of respect for NC State
Last month, a poster named packdiver05 shared the following story on Pack Pride’s premium boards that we could not ignore. It will make you sick when you read this, but the exchange re-inforces Fowler’s innate disrespect for the institution that he leads. I unfortunately have more perspective on this than I have time to type.

I know the nonrevenue sports don’t mean a lot to many people but to all the kids at this school that are working there butts off just as hard as these revenue athletes on much smaller or NO scholarships, and the alumni that gave four years to the university devoted to a sport they loved, it means a whole lot. I figured this story might help some of you get into the mind of our great Lee Fowler…

As a nonrevenue athlete at State completely under his tenure, for a sport that DOMINATED the ACC and national rankings for a very long time, I got to see how little he cared about our success first hand.

At a team meeting my senior year, we had the privilege of being berated by Lee Fowler for some of our teammates’ trying to get our coach replaced, at this time in his career it was OBVIOUS that he was not taking this program back to its glory days of the seventies and eighties.

At this meeting Lee Fowler stated that his goal for all nonrevenue sports was to be competing for a top 3 finish in the ACC standings, and to annually place in the top half of the conference standings. Looking back now, this would be a great goal for most of our athletics teams, because we are not even there, let alone challenging to win these championships. This to me is an unacceptable goal at UNC, at Duke, and throughout the ACC.

At this same meeting Mr. Fowler said one last thing that will forever sting me in the back of my head, and convinced me that this man is the largest problem/obstacle for the NC State athletics program. He asked our whole team, “Who here received scholarship offers to compete in the SEC?”

To me, the nerve of that question, to belittle us athletes that had devoted four years to this great university, by suggesting that most of us were not even good enough to compete in the SEC, that we should be happy that we were receiving scholarships anywhere, let alone here was degrading. And this man is supposed to be our universities greatest supporter.

Winning in Waco
Since we were talking women’s basketball, why not take a quick look at the following quote from Kim Mulkey:

“Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t win at the highest level at Baylor University,” Mulkey said. “It’s been proven, and there’s no reason it can’t be done. It takes the right administration, the right resources and the right coaches.

Is it any wonder that NC State no longer competes at the highest level in college athletics since we only have one of the those three elements.

If any of you reading this have ever set foot in Waco, TX (particularly in the months of May-September) the idea that winning at the “highest level at Baylor University” is one hard damn thing to do.

While we are discussing Baylor, can I just say Scott Drew to get it on the record now? This guy is going places.

I can’t believe that Fowler addressed students trying to get their coach fired. What AD would defend his coaches against a student uprising?

  2. txpack 04/15/2009 at 11:14 PM #

Fowler is only the symptom and surface. The result is the under performance of our athletics teams.

The root cause is located at somewhere higher than Fowler.

  3. Greywolf 04/15/2009 at 11:14 PM #

He asked our whole team, “Who here received scholarship offers to compete in the SEC?” And the interpretation that the disgruntled student athlete had was that Fowler was belittling the team members? Without any context we are free to interprete that anyway we want. It could have been asked to shine a light on advantages the competing SEC schools enjoyed. Without context, who knows?

  4. Cosmo96 04/15/2009 at 11:31 PM #

The guy who posted that was actually there when it happened. I think he knows the context.

Were you there? I’d be interested in hearing more than from somebody who was looking for something to hang on Fowler.

  6. Cosmo96 04/16/2009 at 4:55 AM #

Does it matter? If you don’t believe that guy, who was there, you’re not going to believe me or anyone else who might have also been there. I understand your point about context, but it can go the other way, too. If the guy does have an agenda, perhaps it originated as a result of this incident, and the perceived slight to him and his teammates. Maybe they loved Fowler before this, but his exact wording and his tone when talking to them actually were meant to convey insult. In other words, there are all kinds of contextual variables that we don’t know about. Given that, I just don’t see any reason not to take the guy’s account at face value, rather than try to pick his post apart one way or the other.

As for me, I guess you could say that I have an “agenda” regarding Fowler (for whatever that’s worth), but frankly, I don’t need this story to further it. Just read the recent SFN entry on Director’s Cup standings; it sums up perfectly what has been, for a while now, the source of my frustration with the job he’s done. I would feel the same way whether I had read the diver’s remarks above or not.

  7. Wulfpack 04/16/2009 at 5:27 AM #

The root cause is located at somewhere higher than Fowler.

Exactly. His behavior has been more than tolerated. I dislike the job Fowler is doing as much as the next guy, but he’s only the tip of the iceburg.

Greywolf, why do you have to always be the contrarian on every single thread? You don’t need “context” here, the writer gave you everything you needed to know very clearly. The writer said Fowler “belittled” he and his teammates. There’s your context.

  8. Wolf74 04/16/2009 at 6:20 AM #

Not only has the man “reportedly” belittled the players, he HAD belittled his fans for caring. THAT ALONE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN HIM FIRED. What other business would allow one of its executives to insult his customers and remain in place.

I was recently sent a survey by the Wolfpack club. Finally after all these years of no contact. I filled it out telling them why I, who was a member for 20+ years and had season football tickets for 17 years had dropped out of the club and no longer had tickets. My reason, NCSU athletics has no passion to win, does not appear to strive for excellence of any kind, and has an athletic department with no vision or leadership!

Fowler should have been released after his insult to the fans but certainly after the completely botched mens basketball search.

  9. Texpack 04/16/2009 at 6:23 AM #

^The root cause is located at somewhere higher than Fowler.

Absolutely. If Fowler’s bosses didn’t think he was doing a good job, he wouldn’t still be here.

  10. UpstateSCWolfpack 04/16/2009 at 6:39 AM #

Our problem is this. Purcell is excellent at what he does for the Wolfpack Club. And, as long as he continues to be one of the best in country, Fowler is going no where until at least 10/2013. Can the Wolfpack Club not apply pressure to the university to make a change at AD? As long as our loyal and faithful fans back our teams and State continues to have one of the best booster clubs in the nation, I am afraid Fowler is going be around for awhile.

Pack your bags Foul-up. Nobody wants you here.

  12. waxhaw 04/16/2009 at 6:41 AM #

Greywolf — In what context do you think that would have been a positive for Lee Fowler?

You mentiond to shine light on SEC advantages? I’m not sure I follow this example.

Also, if he was furthering a point, wouldn’t you think he would have followed up that statement with an explanation?

  13. TOBtime 04/16/2009 at 7:04 AM #

You’re right SFN, this just makes you sick. In defense of Greywolf, I would have asked for clarification on the SEC part. If foul-up then reinforced that we, as athletes at NCSU, were second tier by not being pursued by SEC schools the meeting should have been closed. Immediately the Chancellor should have been notified as well as Bobby Purcell AND WRAL. The administration should have been put on notice that athletes giving it their all were not going to be talked to like kids who were chosen last for a pick-up game on the playground. Foul-up has done enough to be fired. His instances of disdain for NCSU people just needs to be gathered up by the right person(s) and presented as a whole to the right people.

In hindsight, do we really expect more from an SEC alumni from VANDY?

“The root cause is located at somewhere higher than Fowler.”

Exactly. Fowler is not going to show himself the door. Oblinger or BOT need to be the ones to do something. The BOT is passionate more or less, but personally, from what I’ve heard and seen, Oblinger could care less about the amount of success we sustain in athletics i.e. he’s an academic man

  15. Rick 04/16/2009 at 7:11 AM #

Just wind up greywolf and watch him excuse everything LF does.
I think LF could take a squat on greywolf’s head and he would explain how it helped add body to his hair style.

  16. Alpha Wolf 04/16/2009 at 7:11 AM #

Grey, with all due respect, in this case you’ve got no possum up the tree that you are barking at.

  17. choppack1 04/16/2009 at 7:19 AM #

I’ve said it before – and I’ll say it again. THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL that people who supervise Lee Fowler can be unaware of his track record.

*They have to know that our overall athletic department is not making progress compared to the rest of the ACC on the field.
*They have to know that we were the only ACC school last year to lose a scholarship due to the new APR rules.
*They have to know he’s the only AD to go on a local radio show and bring up “cougars” in the slang context.
*They have to know he’s tossed gasoline on the fire of coaching controversies by attacking the fans.
*They have to know that he conducted a coaching search that is held up nationally as the example of WHAT YOU DON’T WANT TO DO WHEN HIRING A COACH.

These things are obviously OK w/ them. Does’t that speak volumes about the universities leadership and expectations overall?

  18. Pack Leader 04/16/2009 at 7:21 AM #

    True story,

Last week at a raleigh resturant I saw lee Flowup leaving when I was entering. Im usually cordial or friendly with any and all NCSU coaches, players, and admin. but that day, I felt differnt. After the womens coaching “search” and just getting word that he would return to the wolfpack I decided I will not sugar coat anything to that man.
So I decided to walk past him and say, “either make a comentment to atletics as a whole, or leave cause we are just about sick of mediore.” He said thanks I will.

    GO AWAY LEE.

and side note, Luke Cathron 6’9″, a 5 star C, top 15 player in the nation, annouced that state as his leader in recruitment at the Boo Williams tourney this past weekend. He is good friends with Leslie, If we could get a solid comment from him i truly believe CJ will come back and join the pack….

Thanks for the story packdiver05. The mens soccer team had a similar meeting in ’02 or ’03. The team wanted the soccer coach replaced, and after submitting a signed petition, got to meet with fowler. In similar fashion, he dismissed any of our concerns saying he has looked into things and that our team simply did not have good enough players to compete with the other teams in the ACC. (ACC is the best soccer conference in the country for what its worth) He also commented that even Dean Smith had a few down years. My thoughts were 1) isnt the coach responsible for recruiting those subpar players? 2) maybe the coach’s lack of player development is the reason why our players arent good enough. 3) please look at tarantini’s record and show me how he can be compared to Dean Smith. The method of fowler conveying his message to us was much worse than the actual message he was delivering in my opinion, and is what started my having no respect for him.

  20. Astral Rain 04/16/2009 at 8:03 AM #

I say people need to bring the Fowler Bags, sponsored by Harris Teeter to games- especially the televised ones.

That may get the message out.

Absofreakinlutely. I can’t imagine any senior athlete with nothing to lose not taking an incident like that and shoving it right up his…by taking those comments attributed to Fowler further than Pack Pride.

If the tone in that meeting was how it’s being shaped, then I’m insulted and I haven’t played in over 30 yrs.

But, in common with Choppack, I’ll say it again.

” If we know. They know. “

  22. Noah 04/16/2009 at 8:18 AM #

I believe the CJ Leslie thing is over for us. Cothron’s been a big target for us for awhile. Anthony Grant is targeting him big time.

  23. wufpup76 04/16/2009 at 8:24 AM #

I’ve wanted Fowler gone but not in a way that would publicly disparage him or embarass his family (yeah, he did disparage us fans, among others – but no need to stoop to his level).

But if diver’s and socker’s stories are indeed true then I don’t really care what happens to the man. Those are just disgusting examples … examples that no doubt shine light on the culture that has pemeated N.C. State for so long.

I’ve seen into the “mind” of Fowler more than I want or need to.

  24. TheCOWDOG 04/16/2009 at 8:24 AM #

The more I think about it, the SEC schol offer statement in itself illustrates the decline in State athletics in general.

Had an AD asked that same question us in the day, he would have had trouble counting the raised hands in the room.

  25. Packman02 04/16/2009 at 8:28 AM #

^ Leslie’s probably going to take a page out of the Book of Wall, in terms of how his recruiting transpires. We’ll probably be ‘in it’ until the end, though, in reality, we’re probably already ‘out of it’.

I’m one of the few fools still holding out hope for Wall but after he (inevitably) burns us, I won’t fall for this sort of stringing along again.

^^ As for the Fowler stuff, where do I even begin. I agree with most of what you guys have said and am beyond angry. I recieved a survey from the WPC today and, as I always do, took the time to provide them with some feedback. I made sure to highlight the fact that, while I’m generally pleased with Bobby P and crew, I EXPECT them to leverage their strong influence over NCSU athlectics (they are the fund-raising arm, right) in an effort to up the pressure on the stalwarts in the athletic department not committed to WINNING (sorry for the run-on sentence…).

Probably won’t really make a difference, but it was nice to politely rant, anyway.
