Maryland Notes

The series with Maryland dates back to 1909, with the two teams meeting every year since 1956. The rivalry has been a close one through the years, as evidenced by the 30-30-4 series record. The Terrapins have two more wins in College Park while NC State holds a one-win advantage in Raleigh.

The Wolfpack has lost six of the last eight games to Maryland, but prior to that streak had won eight of nine. Tom O’Brien is 2-1 against Maryland in his coaching career, including a win in his only trip to College Park, a 31-16 victory in 2005 while the head coach at Boston College

Not counting 2008’s 37-0 win by Maryland, the previous seven contests between NC State and Maryland (five of which the Wolfpack lost) have all gone down to the wire, with the average margin of victory being just 5.4 points. NC State’s 10-point win at College Park in 2004 was the largest margin in those seven games before last season.

In 2000, the teams went into double-overtime in College Park before State fell, 28-35. In 2001, the Terrapins scored with under a minute remaining to win 23-19 and in 2002, Maryland kicked a field goal with 34 seconds remaining to take their first and final lead: 24-21. In 2003, after missing an extra point to tie the game for Maryland, the Terrapin placekicker booted a 43-yard field goal with just 23 seconds remaining to give his squad a 26-24 victory.

In 2004, the Wolfpack won by 10 by dominating the Terrapins defensively. NC State won by six, 20-14, in 2005 to become bowl eligible in the final game of the season. In 2006, the Pack turned the ball over three times to give the Terrapins a short field and easy scores, as NC State fell 26-20 in College Park.

How poorly does the Wolfpack statistically stack up against the rest of the country? (Link)

Wolfpack is thin, that is nothing new. (Link)

Failing to capitalize on third down for our offense and our defense has been a primary problem this year. (Link)

Only a few other struggling teams nationally have third-down problems as serious as N.C. State’s. The Wolfpack ranks 94th out of 119 Bowl Subdivision teams in third-down defense, with opponents converting 43.4 percent for the season.

On offense, N.C. State’s 28.1 percent third-down conversion rate ranks 111th in the Bowl Subdivision. Syracuse, San Diego State and Utah State are the only other teams to rank 94th or worse in both categories.

To be honest I think Fridien has done more with less for his entire run there (8th year?). I don’t know if it’s cause he’s fat or what, but why is he never mentioned for any openings? Chuck was, there’s some perspective.

Maryland to me has a hospital (Hopkins) with some smart people, kick butt lacrosse, alot of horses and even more White Knights. The Fridge has somehow always got them somewhere in the mix.

I don’t like to make predictions, but, something tells me being dominated in every statistical category won’t allow us being in the game with 2 minutes to go. TJ is are only chance at the spread IMO.

This one reminds me of the BC game. It will take at least 25-30 points to give us a chance at a good outcome. Maybe we can get some turnovers. Md has a veteran squad and maybe is hitting it’s stride. Then again, MTSU and UVa happened.

  3. 61Packer Says:

The Wolfpack loses just about every time they’re on tv. There’s no tv for this one, and the field might be muddy. Plus, this week it should be the Bad Maryland again. Lord knows the football gods owe us one. Hug your radio; this is it.

Does anyone else remember the State Maryland basketball game at Maryland in I think 2001. State’s program seemed to be on the rebound and at the end of the game State appeared to score and be fouled. The call went the other way and State lost. This game was when I felt State’s bball program wasn’t ever able to recover from.

I don’t remember the details now or the players but I do remember driving back from Atlanta listening to game and going from the highest high to the lowest low in a matter of seconds. If anyone remembers the details better I would love to remember that tragic moment in NC State athletics.

^The infamous black uniforms/Damon Thornton charge call leading to technical foul game.

Maryland has definitely screwed us over many times over the past decade or so.

  6. Primewolf Says:

Hate to say it but MD will likely beat us like a drum. They won’t have to punt unless a different set of D coaches and players show up.

If our D holds them to 24 points or less, we may have a chance if we play well on O. Otherwise, I just don’t see it. The pathetic soft zone we play allows any HS quarterback to throw on us all day long.

Coaches, take some chances, your D philosopy ain’t working.

  7. CStanley Says:

That stretch of games during Philip’s tenure, particularly the 2001, 2002 & 2003 affairs, left me feeling like I had been kicked in the nuts after those games. I have never left Carter-Finley as sick as I had after the 2001 and 2003 games.

Fridge has a hold of us big time.

I have never cursed louder or more vehemently … EVER … Good teams overcome that sort of stuff eventually instead of losing 9 in a row or whatever, so there’s that, but my God that was a complete horses**t call … Not as bad as the Larry Rose “Wiping the floor too long coming out of a timeout” technical foul call in the ‘04 ACC tourny semi – also against Maryland that cost us a game – but bad nonetheless

God I hate UMd with their a**hole attitudes and psychopath fans … and F Larry Rose

I watched the Dookeys play the Twerps at the Comcast Center and there was so much cussing, F words in particular, that the TV guys ran out of delay from hitting the dump button so many times. Coach K and Williams took the floor to try to calm down the fans. I was thinking they ought to rename the place the Comcuss Center.

  10. PackerInRussia Says:

I mentioned in a post after the FSU game that, if the rules allow it, teams should request to forgo 1st and 2nd down and skip straight to 3rd down and any distance when they play State. State seems successful enough in stopping other teams on 1st and 2nd down, but no matter how far they have to go, 3rd down is almost a gimme. That mixed with the O’s failure to convert on 3rd down is not a recipe for winning. It results in the defense being on the field a long time, bending and breaking repeatedly.

  11. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc Says:

I remember when Lefty and Norm battled it out. With a few seconds to go and the game is on the line we get a tv timeout only to hear ‘Sail with the Pilot’ and as a kid I would go crazy hearing that damn ad. Enough to make you crazy. The only thing worse was Diana Shore presenting the Holly Farms ‘chicken player’ of the game. I did love the Earth, Wind and Fire instrumental intro to ACC Basketball back when Packer and Thacker were doing the games. This was when Reynolds, Carmichael, Little John, and people still said Lawrence Joel Memorial coliseum.

As awful is the name RBC Center I can assure I will never call Carter Stadium anything else. I will shed a tear when I hear Terry Gannon doing a game and say something like ‘welcome to SAS stadium’.

We know that O’Brien is going to take away the slope in the field for his own reasons. (After 30 years some yank is going to change the field) but will be gone in a few years We’ve had to live with the stadium going from Carter to Carter-Finley, the team moving from the field house to the Murphy Center side but if O’Brien wants to level the field he better damn win.

The football program was better when State had the hill and the basketball program was better when they played in R

This reminds me of Lester pulling up the rubber floor that was so good to State basketball to replace it with the floor that State has sucked on for the last 15 years. Not even considering the ankle injuries that followed after Les pulled up the floor and replaced it with the 1960’s floor he played on.

Just like the Boston Celtics replacing the parkey floor that has served no purpose.

The football program was better at Carter Stadium and the basketball program was better at Reynolds. For life of me I can’t understand why State change either facility.

  12. Wufpacker Says:

State did just fine in bball BEFORE the infamous tartan floor was put down also. Has nothing to do with the floor, but rather the team thats on it.

    Same with football.

I’ve no problem with TOB wanting a level field and don’t believe it has anything to do with the quality of the team he’ll (eventually) be fielding year in and year out, which I hope and believe will be high quality. But if its not it sure isn’t because he had the field leveled.

    ^^ Glory Days, they’ll pass you by….

  14. Sw0rdf1sh Says:

I’ve been pissed at Maryland ever since they ruined Phillip Rivers last game in CF. With a key DB out, maybe we can throw the ball all around them today…..maybe.

From the above basketball discussion, was that the same game that Damon Thornton put his nuts in that centers face on a dunk?

That my friends, was a posterizing dunk. I’ll always have that memory to lessen the anger.

  15. BJD95 Says:

The Maryland “charge” game is the last time I have ever blamed the refs for a loss. Yes, that includes the TA fumble game in CH.

If the Terps are going to be schizo all year, then we have a 50/50 short today. On the other hand, if (as I fear to be the case) they finally have their shit together – we are going to get worked bigtime.

  16. TOBtime Says:

The TA (turnover anytime) fumble is the one that will haunt me. The moron had just ripped off a 15 yard run (which, like an idiot, he ran out of bounds) but we got a first down. Next play, instead of letting Rivers run out the clock, the ball goes back to TA and he gets his clock CLEANED and fumbles. UMD kicks a field goal and we go from Gator Bowl to Tangerine Bowl.

  17. SEAT.5.F.2 Says:

Has anyone noticed that the offense put in this spring has been chopped down? RW stands in the shotgun on almost every ofensive snap and has a RB to his side. Against USC and maybe Clem he would receive snap, read the end and decide to hand off or run (maybe just the appearenceand every play has no QB option).

Either way, since the staff witnessed the scary concussion to RW and the play of whats left as signal callers not named Glennon, the QB as a rusher has been totally scraped. His scrambling aside, RW has not had his number called by Bible in an effort to build some sort of rushing attack. Why?

It makes no sense to line up Brown and Eugene next to him and cut half the field off left to defend because you won’t risk it with your QB taking it on his own. This is my observation of the offense having a chapter of the playbook scraped, because it appears that the only reason RW is in the gun every play is that he can’t operate under C.

Turner and Md. will play it right, they run the same formation. He ran wild on us last year and there is no reason to think that RW couldn’t do the same. I would rather lose doing everything we can even if it means increasing the probability Beck has to come in rather then show our hand to the defense about who/where we are rushing the ball.

  18. SEAT.5.F.2 Says:

Besides RW running the ball more I would love to see Pierson given a shot at faking a punt. The dude is a 4.5/40 and has shown sometimes nastiness when he gets in on tackling. You have to try something during the year to atleast show future teams something to look out for.

  19. TOBtime Says:

^SUPER nasty for a guy his size. He seems to get the angle just right and lays people out.

  20. RBCRowdy Says:

Does anyone know of a way to cheat espn 360 or is anyone aware of a site that is going to stream the game today?

  21. b Says:

I can’t explain it, but I feel State matches up great with Maryland. I have a sneaking suspicion we’ll get the Dr. Banner version (MTSU, UVa) rather than the Incredible Hulk (Cal, WF), and our guys are gonna be amped for revenge after the lackluster effort at the end of last year. Andre and Jamelle are gonna make some plays and our defense will play over their heads. They have had turnover problems, and the Pack is due for a big break. Graham will have a big day their speical teams have had lapses, and RW plays a solid game to make up for his performance last week. State wins 28-17.

  22. wufpup76 Says:

“From the above basketball discussion, was that the same game that Damon Thornton put his nuts in that centers face on a dunk?”

Yes it was – and that was the exact play that sent that season into a downward spiral … HWSNBN and the guys on that team had such a fragile psyche that the season ended on that one play … sad … In fairness, that team would have been 6-2 in ACC play at that point – it was a devestating call

I was at the Philip Rivers senior game, and the conduct of the UMd players, staff, and visiting fans was nothing short of goonish from before kickoff when they delayed senior day activities by pushing our band members around to the end of the game when stomping on our logo at midfield and flipping off fans while running off the field … all courtesy of a timely fumble from Mr. Fumbles

I guess all of our good karma ran out in ‘83, b/c if there was ever a university that should suffer some bad fate against us it’s UMd … but I guess getting punked over and over is the price we pay for ‘83

  23. wufpup76 Says:

“Does anyone know of a way to cheat espn 360 or is anyone aware of a site that is going to stream the game today?”

I’ve looked everywhere I can think of and I can’t find a work-around … looks like I’ll be stuck to radio coverage w/ everyone else :(

  24. caniac45 Says:

“Does anyone know of a way to cheat espn 360 or is anyone aware of a site that is going to stream the game today?”

I googled free espn360 account or something like that and found an article about how students with a .edu email can get it for free, but after looking on the site and changing to my student email address, I can’t figure out how to do it.

  25. haze Says:

I agree that the coaches have gone out of their way to protect RW since the concussion. It does limit our offense but I still agree with the move. Right now, this kid is getting better every game, despite the limitations. We aren’t going anywhere this year, so why risk his health (long term or short) and his development at the position? Sure, playing him at all is a risk but running him into a DE read guarantees hits that he doesn’t need.

Keep him healthy and in the game. Run him more next year after he’s had plenty of time to heal up.
