Think this would have EVER happened if he wasn’t going pro?
UPDATE: The N&O blog was actually first on this story, and reports slightly different charges.

A better question would be if this hurts his draft chances and he returns do you believe he will miss any time at all…..I would bet no
June 6th, 2008 at 9:26 am
I seriously doubt this will hurt his draft status. As much as I hate the Holes I gotta say I like Mr. Lawson’s game. Very quick… I guess it’s kinda like hating a band, but liking one song they put out. LOL…
Seriously this is nothing at UNC-CH. If Ed Cota & Terrence Newby can assault a fellow student at UNC, have the court date postponed till after the season, and then be allowed to play basketball then this is nothing. If they were innocent like they claimed then why pay for the student’s medical expenses.

catchme said what I was thinking … For what it’s worth, the NBA does have an image issue that it’s trying to clean up a little – so this arrest could make it interesting to see how it impacts his draft status and subsequent decesion to return to Hole Nation or not …
Of course, this is the NBA we’re talking about – where potential, hype, and style matter far more than substance and production – so in all likelihood this will raise his draft status
… “He’s just proving he’s officially one of us now. LET’S DRAFT HIM!”
June 6th, 2008 at 9:51 am
I don’t know if the NBA would frown too much if this were a first offense, but hearing that his driving privileges are already revoked, and for some “undisclosed reason”, can’t be helping his cause.
The most shocking revelation I see in all of this is that Chapel Hill police made the arrest themselves, that it stuck, and it was actually reported to the press.
“RED ALERT, RED ALERT…APB…all powder blue squad cars in the vicinity please be so kind as to respond…The Coach…pardon me…The Chief…says to be on the lookout for any vehicle that looks like it may have a potential NBA player that likes particularly loud music…over and out.”

All the news outlets are reporting DWI. However, assuming it is in fact “driving after consuming” then it’s much different than a DWI. He’s 20 years old, I believe, so that’s certainly in the realm of possibility. Obviously if you’re under 21 it’s illegal to consume any alcohol and drive. Theoretically Ty could have blown a .01 and been charged. I’ve seen them. Cops don’t cut too many breaks these days. The mug shot isn’t bad, so that makes sense too.
It’s feasible he could get some relief such as a dismissal or a PJC (which cannot be given on a DWI by statute), and it would not affect his car insurance… much less his draft status.
I tell people this everyday: one crime at a time. If you’re underage and you’ve been drinking and you get in the car (dumb in and of itself obviously), try not to draw as much attention as possible to yourself by playing your radio as loud as you can. Sharp kid.

GaWolf- its my understanding that anyone under 21 with alcohol on their breath get a driving after consumption, which is just as bad as a DWI?

Maybe Torry can help with bail and then counsel Ty about the need to stay at Whiskey Hill next year and play ball for his boys in blue.

What great advice! If u drink and drive, don’t speed,….
