Elliot Avent Interview

Just yesterday the N&O ran a Q&A with Tom O’Brien so today’s article focused on Elliot Avent in Technician fits nicely into the week.

Avent has coached at NC State for 12 years and “has compiled 443 victories, second-most in Pack history.” Whenever the media talks in total number of wins and not winning percentage I always get a little nervous. Remember how Herb Sendek had the second most number of ACC wins of any NC State coach? Of course, he had the second to worst ACC winning percentage. Thank God for Les Robinson and Todd Turner, eh?

This year’s Wolfpack baseball team seems to be coming together nicely against a really tough schedule. Hopefully this team can end coach Avent’s drought and finally earn Avent and NC State a conference championship and/or Avent’s first berth to the College World Series.

After returning to State, he took his first three teams to the NCAA Tournament before suffering through a three-year drought, which he said had to do with some recruiting gambles and “bad luck” of recruits being high draft picks. He said it just gave the program a chance, though, to rebound as it has with five straight NCAA appearances starting in 2003.

^ Translation, “Avent struggled on his own after riding the coat-tails of Ray Tanner’s players and legacy and now the program has rebounded to a nice equilibrium of consistently reaching the minimum standard of NCAA tournament appearances.”

I was a little surprised that the article didn’t make mention of the impact of the millions of dollars that have been spent at Doak Field to help show our support of Coach Avent and help elevate State’s program. Hopefully those improvements will serve their desired purpose and help the Wolfpack host a regional in the NCAA Tournament this year.

The N&O also has one up on Sid, which, I’m sure, SFN will discuss.

Few things depressed me more than when State let Tanner walk, hired Avent, then gave him all the renovations Tanner had been begging for. You know, sorta the same thing the administration did to O’Cain.

Of course, we’re all aware of what a failure Tanner has become since his days in Raleigh. The only time I ever pull for South Carolina in anything is at the CWS.

PacknSack, I told my Dad when Ray left he would be in the CWS in 5 years. It took 3. I pull for him every chance I get.
I wonder if the article was written after we choked against UNC-G again? If we ever need a baseball coach the Spartans have a good one who would give Fox at unx a fit.

We have Todd Sabotage Turner to thank for letting Ray Tanner go. Tanner had already turned down the plum Miami job to give Turner a chance to improve Doak.

But we should all know the effects of Todd Turner’s time at the helm of the athletic department. Turner also alienated Dick Sheridan enough to get him to quit.

I can get mad at the N&O for the hatchet job they did on Valvano but I think what really burns me up more than anything else is the way that Todd Turner ran the athletic dept into the ground.

Chasing away Tanner and Sheridan but doing nothing about Robinson’s record in basketball is just irresponsible. I chuckle everytime I think about Vandy eliminating the athletic dept. and leaving Toddy high and dry. It’s obvious he has no business in the athletic business since Washington fired him also.

Anyway I hope that Avent can continue to gain more success. If we had an empty pot of money though I would throw it big time at Tanner to get him back home. He is a great coach.
