I know what you more mature readers are asking and saying right now
Facebook? Is this a joke? What college student has taken over SFN?
Well, this is not a joke.
After reading dozens of articles in the past year in The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Forbes, Fortune and other business magazines SFN (and some of our bloggers) have taken the plunge into another realm of cyberspace by opening Facebook profiles. We’ve been pretty amazed at all of the various ways that the tool can be used.
We think that Facebook provides SFN a natural extension of our community. Our new group page that should be accessible by clicking here allows for discussion boards, picture and video posting and other unique features (once you are approved for membership).
So, if you are are already on FB - or decide to open a new profile - then please search for our new group titled “State Fans Nation” or click here and request to join.

nice!
Well I already have Statefansnation.com on my websites on my page…so i guess Im ahead of the game…sorta in a backwards way.
This is just the beginning.
Will one of you guys try to join the group on FB so we can figure out how to approve requests to join?
Thanks
Fire Lee Fowler and Lee Fowler Must Go are not the statefansnation group, but you should join just as well.
Keep looking for the state fans nation group, its there… but you have to dig around a bit to find it.
I sent a request to join…
Try searching for the contact e-mail for StateFansNation - statefans@gmail.com - and it should come up.
Don’t search for “StateFansNation”
There are spaces in the spelling
State Fans Nation

Alright, sent a request just now. It is impossible to find unless you search by email address… which simply links to your Facebook account where I found the group you created.
It is set up for members to have to be approved. Not for open membership. Is there a way to allow people to invite others to join even under that limitation?
People should be able to click on the “Share +” link on the upper right hand part of the screen and send a message or a post about the group to their friends. Beyond that my knowledge wears thin.
Why not myspace? Isn’t that bigger and more popular? Are there any real differences between them?
Myspace is much more ‘young’ and can’t help but turn off a larger portion of our readers than Facebook.
FB has caught traction with the 30+ crowd as an acceptable place for business applications, social networking, as well as a place to mobilize for causes like neighborhood watches, etc.
It just has a little more broad appeal
I tried searching for it with the spaces with no luck, but the direct link worked great…
I’ve been on Facebook for a while, and also use MySpace strictly for staying in touch with Friends…or in more times than not, finding the ones I haven’t seen in a while.
LinkedIN is a similar approach, but aimed more for the career/networking minded. FB and MySpace both can have the same time of use, it’s all in the user and their intentions.
I can’t stand Facebook personally- too much spam.
Most of the State Enginerring/CS types from the 90s tended to have LJ’s from my memory.
We’re filtered out from Facebook here at the Corporacracy.
That’s my concern RAWFS.
Some working environments (gasp) frown on visiting sites like FB amd MS during working hours and have filters to keep the masses heads down and the blinders on.
I’ll keep SFN in my Favorites and try to stay in touch that way during the M-F daily ritual. Maybe I’ll try FB at home in the evenings and on the weekends.
Just my two cents.
* I’m filtered from FB at work as well.
* I don’t get any spam on FB, so that comment surprises me.
* I use LinkedIn purely for professional reasons. It is a nice resource. FB allows for much more social interaction and I try to keep the two separate.
* My interest in FB was piqued after reading tons and tons of articles in professional publications. I still didn’t take the plunge until a B-School buddy who is an VP at Goldman Sachs told me that they were actually using FB for a lot of business interaction.
I think the best thing about State Fans having a FB group is that not just mods can start a topic on facebook. This will allow some of us who might have a question or something to elaborate on the chance to do so. If the mods dont like it, they can delete it. This could also be a huge way to get the attention of more students.
I set up a myspace page last fall to communicate with a band I had joined. That band didn’t work out. I started getting all kinds of come-ons from other myspace members. That was kinda strange. I wanted to set up a music page where I put old jazz standards I had worked up but myspace said they prohibited cover tunes (even 50+ year old cover tunes). I have since seen others posting newer cover tunes on myspace. So their ban on copyrighted material is not consistently enforced. I was turned off by the whole Mickey Mouse vibe and didn’t much like the idea of putting a bunch of personal information out there. I decided no good would come of that and deleted the account.
Call me a fuddyduddy or a stick-in-the-mud but I don’t much care for this social networking stuff. As some have discovered, there are some downsides to it.
^ I like the comment “Micky Mouse vibe”
One should never say never in life, but I’m pretty sure I’ll NEVER use facebooks and the like. I don’t even have an ebay account.
It will sadden me greatly if this blog community begins to slip because everyone is discussing topics more on facebook rather than here.
^ i worry bout that too. THIS is a GREAT site.
dont worry… facebook is limited in its ability to “blog”
“I don’t even have an ebay account.”
GA, I’m freakin’ 50 and I buy stuff over there. In fact I just bought a NCAA08 XBox game (for #3 son) and had a problem and got a refund through PayPal.
You can find s*(stuff) over there that you can’t find anywhere else on earth. That’s almost a Luddite approach man.
Yeah, facebook is more of a ‘party line’ for college students but I don’t think it could ever replace the thinking man’s blog (there are already outlets for that, say like PackPride and I(diot) C(entral)).
The biggest problem with facebook is most college students post too much personal info on their profiles (especially a problem for females). Son #2 who is a senior in engineering started getting texts messages from some guy in the Midwest because he posted his cell# and too much personal info.
Had to get his number changed because of it.
Dropped a request over there.
Like some posters above, I hope there is not any dilution, by opening up another “channel.”
The only dilution will be people who want to talk smack and run off at the mouth but don’t really have anything tangible to contribute. Let ‘em go. Wonder if that was SFN’s purpose in the post in teh 1st place.
Frankly I don’t like to read 53 posts by idiots to get to the good ones.
Im a facebooker and i would just like to point out that on my friends list are a few of the wolfpack Basketball players. I have searched profiles of our recruits and John Wall is friends with Courtney Fells, Simon Harris and Brandon Costner. I cant remember if there were any more but those three showed up on my “Mutual Friends” List
I have always liked this site in particular for a reason. It separates itself from other sites by insightful analysis (by most bloggers) yet passionate debate and has over time created a tremendous data bank (old ludite term for the past posts links on the right). Typically these are filled with additional links that provide a wealth of information on the Pack. Can I get that on FB? Just asking.
SFN: No way…you cannot get that on FaceBook. We’ve simply set up a group on FB to utilize its more interactive capabilities for those that are interested. Additionally, it gets us closer to a larger group of students/younger generation folks without diluting the blog. We will NOT be changing our focus from the actual blog in any way. We promise.
what’s this new Internets thing?
Face book? whose space?
besides, JuicyCampus is better,
even if it’s a Dukie site.
FB and MS is the CB of the web.
“daddy, back in the olden days…
what was FaceBook?”
MIGHT AS WELL GO AHEAD AND ADD THE NC STATE FOOTBALL FANS APP TO YOUR PROFILE. LETS TRY AND STAY AHEAD OF THE OTHER ACC FANS WHO ARE MAKING THEIR SCHOOLS FOOTBALL GROUP BIG. THERES ALSO GOOD DISCUSSION TOPICS…

I don’t mind getting through the 53 (make that 54) to get to the good ones…
It will never replace this site, that is for sure….
In truth, it can only bring us closer together, or possibly bring those that have yet to hear about the SFN community.
These sites are full of poop like Spam “Friend Requests”, etc., but with the proper settings, all you have to do as a user is deny.
More importantly, you will never stop looking for your late breaking news from SFN…but rather will have a possible future spot to learn of the breaking news. AND, this will provide a vehicle for possible future readers and contributors to SFN and the like.
Nothing like growing the Wolfpack Nation fellahs.
Thanks for your contributions SFN.
I am 31 and have been on Facebook for about 2 years now. Anyone who likens it to Myspace is ignorant (not stupid, but has not actually compared the two). Myspace is so yesterday! Facebook is the future (or present actually) of social networking. Go ahead and grasp it all of you who are resistant to change. Rule of thumb, if it looks like Google, it’s here to stay.
As an aside, has anyone else noticed how a Myspace page takes FOREVER to load? Whereas, I can open multiple Facebook pages at one time? Myspace sucks goat butt.
