Q: What Now? A: SFN Adopt-A-Team!

Yes, as I predicted yesterday, Dr. Kevorkian visited the Pack dressed like the Miami Hurricanes. JJ Hickson put up a lonely fight, but the 2007-08 season is finally, mercifully over for NC State.

But that doesn’t mean giving up basketball and waiting for football season! Our fun-loving SFN community can just adopt a team to follow during March Madness. One that’s likeable and culturally similar. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…the Clemson Tigers. Tough as nails. Twice screwed against Carolina, they got off the mat and fought back like we begged (in vain) for our Wolfpack to do.

Let’s try it on for size during the “real” portion of the ACCT. If we like it, we’ll cover the Tigers in the dance as if they were our very own. Game threads, live blogging, the works. If not, we’ll open the floor for nominations. But I think the Tigers fit. Reasonably classy, long suffering fans. ACC party crashers. (Those 2 only apply to hoops). A school with ties to engineering and agriculture. A team out for vengeance against Carolina. Probably the only ACC team that really matches up well with Carolina. And not a team that’s so good that we look and/or feel like front-runners.

We will update with Clemson links tomorrow, and maybe add some thoughts about today’s debacle.

    Question:
“If Greg Paulus drives down the lane, and runs over Tyler Hansbrough, and both fall to the floor, who do the refs call a foul on?”

    Answer:
    “Clemson’s front-court”

    TICKET SCAM

If you’re in or around the tourney this weekend, be careful. I was there today and Carolina fans were blowing dudes for their weekend passes. After they finished, they didn’t even want the tickets, so be careful out there.

  3. 3 Wulfpack

I will adopt the Yellow Jackets and probably be stung, but I don’t care. It is March 13th and I have no more basketball to care about.

My two cents: Johnson should not see the floor next year. He is of no benefit. Better get his pom poms ready. Horner - Who’s he? Costner - I don’t know why but I feel terrible for him because he has fallen off the map and has no pro future after such a promising freshman campaign. Ben Mac - No show. Fergie - Nice D on McClinton today, good stroke, but a 2nd rate ACC player. Fells - Does anybody want to light a fire under his butt? So much talent, so little to show for. Javi - I sure hope Degand is better than you. Learn how to shoot without kicking your legs out. It’s like a five year old trying to get the ball up to an eight foot rim. Smith - Take no prisoners this offseason. The starting job is yours if you keep up the good work. Hickson - Make us proud. Grant - Sorry you had to go out like that. Thanks for the good times and the best of luck to you. Lowe, Towe, Strickland and Harris - start looking.

  4. 4 wufpup76

Totally w/ you there, BJD … I’m on the Tiger bandwagon for the rest of this season, and will cheer for other ACC brethren in the NCAA tournament as long as the schools are not located in either Durham or Chapel Hill

  5. 5 PackWolf82

James Mays is a friend of mine and he and Cliff Hammonds deserve this success(an NCAAT trip) after what they’ve done for the program at Clemson. I know most of the guys on the team and they’re all pretty cool guys. for the rest of the way Go Tigers!

…this from a DieHard State fan and Alum in Grad School at Clemson…Painful watching all 4 games against UNX!

  6. 6 Howler

Definitely go Tigers, but I would be thrilled if we could just have a Sunday without either shade of blue.

  7. 7 MattN

Wife is a Clemson alum. So I’m a Tiger fan now…

  8. 8 PackMan97

I don’t care who, just make it ABC. Cover Maryland, cover Duke, cover anyone but Carolina.

    F*** CAROLINA!

BTW - I grew up a Clemson fan and hating Carolina (South)…so them winning it would be the best scenario but I don’t care as long as it isn’t Carolina. East, West, North or South they are all Carolina and they can all go to heck!

  9. 9 cowdog

I’ve adopted a team after a day of tourney ball.

ASU…yea I know, how can ya go so long without a field goal and then get f….. familiar?

Never the less…you fill in the blanks.

  10. 10 EverettBeez

I can’t do it. I just can’t pull for Clempson.
Ole Miss Rebels, if only because they have by far the best looking co-eds in America. The only place they red shirt Miss Americas. We are on now play UGa.

  11. 11 RAWFS

    Offtopic

Packwolf82 - I followed your link on your handle and ended up on your Flickr page. Good work - and it looks like you had exactly the same problems I had with the lunar eclipse. I completely forgot to account for the moon’s constant movement and got slightly blurry photos for my trouble.

Anyhow, there’s some very good work on that site. Heck, you should share some of the game photos with the blogosphere and get it in front of NC State fans.

  12. 12 RAWFS

Ole Miss Rebels, if only because they have by far the best looking co-eds in America.

We could have an entire thread about that. Florida, UCLA, UGA and Texas might want to get into that battle.

  13. 13 blpack

The guys have to go to class now and get the semester behind them. This is a very important summer for the program. They need to work on their games and get in the weight room. We were too soft this season. No excuse for that again. Good luck to GG in the future. Whoever has been pouting this season, I hope they shape up. Poor chemistry on this team. No time for that.

    Ps,
I will pull for CU this weekend too.

  14. 14 Astral Rain

    I’ll pull for VT.

  15. 15 PackWolf82

Thanks RAWFS! Never thought of that, but I’d be glad to share. How should I go about doing this? Can you private message me or something? The eclipse ones were definitely a new trial. haha.

  16. 16 redfred2

I’ve been busy as the proverbial one legged man today, but just what was Lowe’s response in the post game radio show today? I missed EVERYTHING and I’d love to hear how he wrapped up this whole, season long, experience in basketball futility.

  17. 17 Noah

Lowe said the guys played hard.

    No, really…he did.

  18. 18 wufpup76

Not really sure where to post this, but ACC Now has a podcast up w/ JP Giglio and Caulton Tudor focusing specifically on NC State and next year’s prospects and how Coach Lowe may fare … Here’s the link if interested:

    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/index.php?title=acc_now_the_podcast_7&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

  19. 19 Primewolf

Oh, is there still ACC BB this year???

I must confess that the way this season has gone that I have totally lost interest in the game. Haven’t watched a non-pack game all year to speak of. It is just too depressing to see other teams with no-name recruits just working their butts off and running up the court having fun vs what our guys do on the court.

I won’t watch a game the whole weekend unless I am totally bored or the weather is too bad for golf.

  20. 20 PackWolf82

I agree Primewolf…I have loved college bball for as long as I can remember but this year’s team took the life out of me as I too just lost interest even though I have a few things left to watch. It is unbelievable how State’s lack of effort or interest in games translated into how I felt too. someone else said it best that I saw on here: “When the team quit, I too quit caring or watching.” It’s a sad day.
We should never lose because of lack of effort. period.

  21. 21 redfred2

Noah, did he say anything about the entire season being a cluster F, or any way apologize to the fans, or possibly his players even? Or, are we seeing another coach who just doesn’t feel the need to explain anything?

NC State is THE safe haven for coaches like that ya know.

  22. 22 Sweet jumper

    Go anybody but UNX.
EverettBeez, Your comment about Ole Miss red-shirting Miss Americas is a classic.

  23. 23 Noah

“Noah, did he say anything about the entire season being a cluster F, or any way apologize to the fans, or possibly his players even? Or, are we seeing another coach who just doesn’t feel the need to explain anything?”

Yes! And then he pulled out, “Coaching For Retards” and realized that he had been holding the book upside down all season. Whoops!

  24. 24 Anthony Grundy

I don’t give a crap about the rest of the ACC tourney. I don’t even care if duke or unc win it again. If they win the tourney again, it’s because they derserve to win it. They are just better than the us and the rest of the league. Maybe one day I’ll be able to say that we are just better than the rest of the teams and we deserved to win the tourney (NCAA or ACC). I reckon that day might come when my grandkids have grandkids. Regardless, I just want it to happen.

  25. 25 PackerInRussia

This is a quote from Lowe from packpride.com:
“I think we didn’t have throughout the year that real leader. That guy, that Engin, who kept everything together on the floor.”
“As a coach you can only do so much. You’ve got to have somebody, one or two players, that are going to control the team”
Not just based on this quote, but I think he attributes the terribleness of the season to the lack of a good point guard (not a new concept) as he seemed satisfied with every other aspect of this game. He said defense was good and that they had a lot of wide open shots that they just didn’t hit. I guess they’re still “almost there” when it comes to winning.

  26. 26 Trip

I’d pull for UVA if I could, they might suck, but damnit, they play hard. Singletary looked sad and just down that his days of college ball had just ended today, and unlike Grant, he gave everything he had to that team in an attempt to continue playing.

I’ll adopt Clemson though, watching Oglesby launch 3’s is amazing. If Gary Williams wasn’t such a jackass I’d pull for Maryland simply because of the tournament MVP Fro.

  27. 27 PackerInRussia

Another quote by Lowe: “You’re asking me if I’m going to leave? [Laughs] You’re asking me if I’m going to leave? I’ve never quit in my life. I’ve never quit in my life”

Funny that he considers that the only way he’d be leaving is if he left on his own since no one at NC Stat would force him out. I’m not saying that he should be forced out, but it just shows that he knows his job is safe despite a bad season.

  28. 28 Trip

Honestly, his job should be safe after a bad SECOND season. Call me next year after a bad third season, then the job should open up.

  29. 29 turfpack

Do you realize that W.F. has had better teams, won championships, and finish higher more times in the regular season than we have in about last 15yrs.Wake FRECKING FOREST-4600 STUDENTS-We are a State university-30,000 students-WHO-WHAT THE-F&%# is going on? Who do we pull for? THE UNIVERSITY OF FIRE EVERYBODYS ASS AT THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT OF NCSU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THAT’S WHO WE PULL FOR IN THE ACCT.

  30. 30 Trip

I would like to hear Bobby Knight’s analysis of this team. It’d be Hey-larious.

  31. 31 turfpack

LIGHT some fires under somebody-Light some fires–A.D.-GONE–THAT’S RIGHT LEE-and any other slack ass that wants to put up with this crap.I don’t really blame all this on Sid aleast he wanted to help try to bring us back-one more year to improve(I THINK HE WILL-I HOPE) BUT LEE -NOT A DAY LONGER

  32. 32 BJD95

BC pulls off the upset - the road to Saturday just got a whole lot easier for our Tigers. Oliver’s coming for you Roy - and this time, he’s taking no prisoners…

  33. 33 PackerInRussia

BTW, Happy “25th”. What a way to honor it.

  34. 34 werncstate

I will be pulling for any ACC team that makes the big dance. The more wins for ACC teams the more revenue for NC State. State will need all the revenue they can get. Trust me, after this season, ticket speculators will not be buying all of the upper level seats to sell for a profit on the resell market. At the Duke game there was a scalper with a fistfull of tickets selling them for 5 dollars each. Next year they may be worth 50 cents.

If the current on field/court performances from our athletic teams continue, the revenue stream will dry up and we can finally say goodbye to Jed.

As for non ACC teams to root for, you got to love the Drake. If you’re looking for a non ACC North Carolina school to chear on, support Davidson. Seeing both of these schools in the sweet 16 would not surprise me at all.

  35. 35 Ed89

“The coach we almost had” also coached for Clemson. Oh Mr. Barnes, how I wish we’d have gotten you two years ago!!! Hell, I’d take Purnell in a second. Shit, Jamie Dixon woulda been nice. Truthfully, Sid isn’t going anywhere in the next year or two, but if there was going to be a change, now would be the best time - the 2009 class is still wide open. If Sid can haul in a great 2009 class, maybe just maybe there’s hope. If there is a silver lining on this season, I don’t see it. There’s only one direction for this program to go, however, and that is UP. The situation was alot different two years ago coming off 5 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.

  36. 36 MrPlywood

Just for a little comparison, here’s a quote from Billy Donovan after the Gators, needing a win over Alabama to keep NCAA hopes alive, got pounded. They were behind 30-5 at one point. Sound familiar? And this from a guy who obviously knows how to coach and how to win.

“It’s in front of our guys, what it takes to win,” Donovan said. “For whatever reason, I haven’t brought it out in them. They’re not committed to it. But I’m not necessarily really that excited about these guys being sophomores, to be honest. I don’t think people change a whole lot, and I don’t think you’ve seen the basketball team change at all this year. So it’s hard for me to get overly thrilled or excited.”

  37. 37 packpigskinfan23

I really think SFN should make a comparison to Sid Lowe’s reactions after these awful games this season, and that of Billy Donovan’s after their loss in the SEC tourney today. He calls out the players, but still takes responsibility himself.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/champweek2008/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3292573

oh, and I will be pulling for Clemson as well. Used to live near there. Always been a bit of a fan.

  38. 38 packpigskinfan23

^wow… I should really read before I write, huh?

  39. 39 JeremyH

I think I’ll pull for Arizona State…and maybe Butler.

  40. 40 spanky

Clemson as long as they go, and if they bow out, I may jump on the Tennessee bandwagon…

Maybe I’m dreaming of what could’ve been with Pearl.. or maybe its an orange thing, I dunno.

  41. 41 JeremyH

actually I used to pull for Georgetown in the eighties; you guys remember the Twin Towers? (Mutumbo/Mourning) Chris Wright looks like he had a nice game today.

  42. 42 old_pcorone

    OK, now it is over
for next year NC State should hire a couple of guys from EL Rodeo in Hillsborough and have them prepapre the meals for the players.
Plenty of hot jalapenos to keep their butts on fire!

  43. 43 PackMan97

    packpigskinfan23,

Florida sounds like they had the same problem we had this year. Players that don’t care.

  44. 44 UpstateSCWolfpack

I hope that since it is my fault for this terrible season (if I watched a game, we lost) I will jump on the UNC bandwagon, hoping that my bad mojo will have them out early. I have a hard time pulling for Clemson because I live in the heart of Clemson territory. Suddenly their fans are basketball fans. In other year and they will tell you that they only care about football. Just like the Heels say about basketball. My brother-in-law jumped on the Clemson basketball bandwagon this year, and it irritates me to high heaven. So I will pull for the ACC teams this year, with the little devil on my shoulder hoping UNC and Duke lose in an embarrassing upset.

  45. 45 Howler

Definitely Davidson in the NCAA’s. One of the few other NC teams I can pull for other than NC State.

  46. 46 LRM

    Go Drake!!!

  47. 47 Wulfpack

“(Horner) played really well for us,” Lowe said. “I hate it because obviously it’s Gavin’s last game. But we were trying to win a ball game. … I just didn’t think (Grant) was ready to play today.”

Grant seemed disconsolate in the locker room afterward. “Nine straight losses,” he said quietly. “I didn’t see that coming. So he didn’t play me because he thought I wasn’t playing well? Yeah, OK. I guess that’s his decision.”

Are you kidding me? Yea, Horner really lit it up there, coach. Classy coach, classy.

  48. 48 vtpackfan

land grant school. sister textile instition. non-annoying fan base. Clemp, easy call.

  49. 49 LRM

“Obviously we had high expectations,” Costner said. “If anything, we disappointed ourselves more than anybody else by how we played.”

    Wanna bet?

  50. 50 Southbeachstyle

As a Pack fan, I feel that whoever I pull for is cursed. Therefore, my vote is to pull for the Heels. Think about it, if they win, we’re happy cause who we were pulling for, actually won for once. If they lose, we’re ecstatic. I call it reverse negative pshchology.

  51. 51 theTHRILL

I immediately thought of Clemson when I read the headline. Count me in on the bandwagon. However, I agree with the previous poster that this will most assuredly be the kiss of death for them.

  52. 52 wolfonthehill

I really don’t care who wins from this point on… I’ll obviously pull against the evil empire, but except for that, it’s going to be a game-by-game thing, or it will be based on my bracket picks. I just don’t like another team enough to actually pull for them from here out.

By the way, the coaching job done by the NC State staff over the past 1-2 months was nothing short of abominable. I have no doubt that the team could’ve lost 9 straight games in embarrassing fashion WITHOUT a coach - meaning that the coaches did nothing to help, and may have even hurt the team’s performances. Not exactly sure why we’d pay them for the last half of the ACC slate, or why we’d ask them to continue “coaching” this team next year.

The only hope I’d have for next year would be if somehow we could bring back JJ, Javi, Trevor, and Tracy… and add a slew of newcomers. Instead, we’ll have mostly the same group we have today, possibly WITHOUT the only player who showed up to play yesterday, and the same coaching staff in place. Expecting a dramatic turnaround is the very definition of insanity.

  53. 53 haze

    Clemson, for sure.

As for the Lowe interview, I just don’t care b/c nothing that is said can read on next year. From an academic viewpoint, next year is going to be EXTREMELY interesting. There are roster questions and talent evaluation questions and off-season prep questions and defensive philosophy questions and recruiting questions. Whew. Big year a comin’.

  54. 54 Astral Rain

At least with El Rodeo they’d have the runs if not the willingness to run. Worst Mexican I’ve ever had was there.

That said, Sid gets one more chance from me. I wasn’t here and don’t remember 83. I don’t remember anything in the Valvano era that much at all, so I’ve only got the Les and Herb era. He’s not even making that.

  55. 55 Rick

I will root for Clemson and the Carolina Hurricanes :-)
    Both teams at least try

    What an abysmal season.

  56. 56 RAWFS

The Hurricanes will have almost all of my attention. I’ll watch the NCAA’s but as a somewhat disinterested spectator. I’ll have almost no emotional investment in it. Maybe watch some State baseball too.

There’s also my sorry-ass golf swing, it needs some work too. You young guys may not yet believe it, because I didn’t in my 20’s and 30’s, but there’s a saying that is 100% true: when you get older, what was once limber gets stiff and what was once stiff gets limber. The first thing is happening now, and I dread the second one coming on later on in the future. Rotating over and through a golf ball is not as easy as it once was, and driver-wedge is now driver 9-iron. @!#!#$!@

  57. 57 Sweet jumper

    Davidson and anybody but UNX.

  58. 58 Rick

I just have to say a few things about this “basketball” team

    1) I have never disliked an entire team NCSU before. They are the wizard of oz of basketball. No heart, no brain and no courage
    2) Why even bother coming back if you are going to continue with the half hearted effort. It is obvious the fans care more about the team than the team members do.
    3) There are so many things wrong I do not even know where to look. How can Sidney fix these things when it is almost impossible to figure out what is wrong? Heck, how much of the problem is him?
    4) Maybe it is just over reaction to this end but I do not see us being any better next year.
    5) Did McCauley and Costner even score? I am not sure why Sid started them but they sure stepped up, to the buffet that is. Most pathetic leadership ever on a team. Abbot and Costello would be better leaders than McCauley and Costner.

  59. 59 CaptainCraptacular

Teams I will root for in the NCAAS

    1) Clemson

    2) any other ACC school

    3) Davidson

    4) Miss. State

    5) Memphis. Used to hate em but I like this years version for whatever reason, coach cal notwithstanding

  60. 60 choppack1

I’ll be pulling for Tyler Hansbro to have a meltdown on the court that results in him being charged w/ assault and a 2nd round loss for the heels in the tourney.

I’ll be rooting for Duke to be up by one in the wanning seconds of a game and to have their opponent lower a shoulder throwing Paulus under the basket, giving the opponent an open layup that he makes at the buzzer. (But I’ll probably end up pulling for Duke)

I’ll pull for the rest of the ACC - Clemson and maybe VaTech. I’ll pull for UT, UCLA.

I would like to see a Kevin Love - Hansboro matchup.

Finally, I’d like an apology from Sidney. It may not be his fault, but he needs to take ownership. Even Chuck took ownership. I also find it disconerting that his ACC conference record is trending towards his NBA coaching record.

  61. 61 DRW

I’m gonna root for Clemson, Xavier and whoever’s playing Dook and Cryolina.

  62. 62 Noah

Just about the most enjoyable non-NCSU game I ever watched was the UNC-Clemson game at the old Charlotte Coliseum back in the early 90s. It was a first-round game where Clemson got a beautiful feed and dunk at the end to win. When was that…1994?

    go tiggers

  63. 63 primacyone

9:00 AM - Lee Fowler has still not been fired. SHOCKING.

I’m not adopting any team, thats to Lee Fowlerish for me.

My dad did not miss a single football game and not many basketball games for 29 years. Season tickets for both for 29 years. I tagged along with him for a good 12-15 of those 29. My children will not have the same experience. Not only will my children not have the same experience from an athletic stand point, but if things don’t change from and academic/campus stand point, I will push them as hard as I can to go to another school. I am an alum of both Campbell and NCSU. Right now, I love everything about Campbell and dislike just about everything at NCSU.

The lazy, no heart, no courgage, no brain, goes all the way to the top.

    Go Canes!

  64. 64 Ismael

what happened did we lose yesterday?? someone tell me we didn’t lose…….We lost?

  65. 65 cwcanady

I sure hope wolfpacker in his right mind jumps on the memphis bandwagon. Calapari (sp) had a chance match wits with the best conference and coaches in the ACC. He spurned the pack and the ACC - (or maybe ol’ Jed).

Instead Calapari chose the comfortable confines of sucker C-USA and a bunch of creampuffs. What a chump. Lets see how that works out for him in the NCAAs.

    Go tigers!

  66. 66 packpigskinfan23

I am also 100% in Carolina Hurricanes mode. I think I have been for about 4 or 4 weeks now. Now that I think about it, the only red I have been wearing lately was without the block-S… it had a different logo.

  67. 67 packpigskinfan23

^3 or 4… you get it.

  68. 68 Ismael

Rick - the comment about the buffet in pt.5 was awesome. JJ broke a team rule hence why he didn’t start. I also think Lowe was really trying to psych up Costner like “you know you’ve mailed it in all year, remember last year when you owned this tournament, remember, remember…that’s the guy Wolfpack Nation wants to see on the court”…(10:35 left in the first half and Trevor Ferguson scores the FIRST F’ING FIELD GOAL)…

    Wolfpack Nation is still waiting

  69. 69 CaptainCraptacular

    Noah: 1996. Clemson 75 UNC 73

  70. 70 primacyone

Herere is what I will be watching through the weekend.

Fri Mar 14, 2008 Hurricanes at Sabres 7:30 PM
Sun Mar 16, 2008 Senators at Hurricanes 3:00 PM

  71. 71 Rick

    What rule did he break?
    trying too hard?
    hustling?
    rebounding?
    scoring at will?

Those all seem to be rules no one else tries to break.

  72. 72 CaptainCraptacular

cwcanady: the creampuff conference USA argument is getting a little old and tired. Memphis has made the final 8 a couple years in a row and did you happen to review their OOC schedule this year at all? Its just plain ignorance to believe that they aren’t any good and won’t go far in the tourney because they don’t play in a top tier conference.

And speaking of calimari, why continue to hold that grudge. I for one am glad that he’s not here. Whining about him not coming here just sounds petty and frankly kinda pathetic. Let him have his partial qualifiers. Rest assured though - he has a DAMN good team that could win it all if they hit their free throws.

  73. 73 BLUE SUCKS

A Definition of Insanity: To clearly identify an action that does not work, but to continue to do the same action over and over and over again

STATE sucks so bad … but even worse, I suck because I am an insane STATE fan. Worst of all - my bias influences my young, impressionable son.

I get questions like these …

Son: “Daddy, why doesn’t STATE ever win?”

Piece of Crap Dad: “Uhh, well son, because Jesus gives all the good players to the holes and the dookies.”

Son: “That’s not fair, Dad, why does He do that?”

Piece of Crap Dad: “Uhh … well, because that’s the way He wants it”

Son: “Then why do we pull for a team Jesus doesn’t like?”

Piece of Crap Dad: “Because we are I-N-S-A-N-E, son, that’s why”

Son: “I don’t want to be insane, Dad, I want to do what Jesus wants me to do”

Piece of Crap Dad: “Then run away from STATE, son … don’t look back … it’s too late for me … save yourself … RUNNNN!!!!”

What is the message I’m sending? Basically this … we love STATE no matter what. It is fine to accept mediocrity, apathy, lack of hustle, etc.

STATE just sucks, plain and simple … sadly, this has become status quo.

Who am I pulling for in the Tournament? Whoever the FREAK wins! That’s who!

  74. 74 kyjelly

comparing Florida with us is a joke……They have a down year they are on the bubble…….they are also very young and he can both coach and recruit……..A down year in FLA is not 4-12 ……

  75. 75 Noah

I’m fine with Calipari staying in Memphis. It’s Rick Barnes and Mike Montgomery and about 20 other guys that I wish we had.

  76. 76 kyjelly

it does appeear that Sid and Fowlup believe they have lifetime civil service jobs here and they are probably right

  77. 77 Rochester

As for Florida, if Sid wins two consecutive NCAA titles, I promise I won’t bitch if we go 4-12 the next season after the entire starting lineup leaves for the NBA.

I’m not pulling for anyone in the ACC tourney, because I don’t care any more (though I hope UNC and Duke lose and Paulus gets a boo-boo and an owie). This Pack team has beaten my love for college hoops right out of me. Kind of hard to enjoy March Madness. I’ve got March Angriness.

  78. 78 blackdom

Wow can’t believe it but Sid thinks he did a good job…….well so does George W and Dick Cheney ps denial is not a river in egypt

  79. 79 Dr. BadgerPack

I don’t need to adopt anyone quite yet- I have my Badgers to pull for (PhD school). Their offense is, well, offensive but dang they play some nice defense.

For those that commented on UF and their problems– I’m a postdoc in Gainesville, so I’ve seen about every game. Most home games they were in, except a couple where they imploded in the second half (two second half implosions against Tennessee). Road games were tough for them. It was an incredibly young team, with little frontline depth– Speights seemed afraid to challenge on the interior very often, perhaps for fear of “who’s the big if I foul out– we ain’t got anyone behind me!” With a bit more balance next year, they’ll be OK. The 1-3 are going to be outstanding if they stick around.

As for the ACC tournament, blah. I’ll look for reruns of the 1957 Kismet championship or something… or boggle; I’ll see how many words I can find that described the state season (crap, sucked, choke, heartless, apathetic… OK, I’m done now :))

  80. 80 Classof89

The settling for Lowe seems all the more bewildering as I look at all the talented coaches at mid-major programs across the country that weren’t even on the short list. Fowler swung for the fences and then settled for a bad NBA coach. As a result, we now play like a bad NBA team.

I think people talking about hiring a head coach from a major conference after next year need to put down the ganja, because I don’t think there is any way we could pull off a Tom O’ Brien level of hire right now in hoops. We have now joined Oklahoma State and San Francisco as programs that have won two national championships a long time ago, but are utterly irrelevent in modern college basketball. This program is an absolute wreck, and if Hickson leaves, I don’t think 0-16 in the ACC next year is inconceivable… We look Georgia Tech 1981 (their first year in ACC)sort of bad, with Lowe in the Duane Morrison role…

Fells, Costner, McCauley, Horner: Please just leave. Don’t tell us why or where you are going. Just leave. You guys are pathetic and I don’t feel sorry for any of you. Free rides to school and the chance to make something of yourselves and all you can do is fight and act like the middle school boys that you are? Hickson: I am sorry that you had to come to State and endure this season. I wish that you would stick around for one more year and see if things will get better but for the sake of your financial future you better go ahead and take the chance while you can. I apologize that most of the little boys on our team were and still are jealous of you because at 19 years old you are better than they will ever be at anything having to do with playing basketball. Your emotional maturity is probably higher right now than it will ever be for most of the children on our team. Grant: Sorry it had to end like this. Does the word or phrase “ego-check” come to mind? Maybe you should use your pre-season statements as a life-long lesson. Sidney and staff: WTF is going on up there? Stop bullshitting us and either air it or freaking fix it! Lee Fowler: Retire you egotistical good ol’ boy jerk! What in the hell are you doing? Ok sorry, I started at State and could not behave myself. I had to come home to my parents in Greenville SC and commute to Clemson every day for 2 and a half years. At the age of 27 I finally graduated and still am a die hard Wolfpack fan. My dad, brother, and most of my dad’s side of the family all went to State. I hate Clemson football but I have to pull for them in basketball simply because they fired Shyatt and brought in Purnell. I work in Greenville SC now and I have to be tortured every day with Clemson football. In fact, this morning when I was driving to work Mickey Plyler was talking about something bad that Spurrier had done at USC. These rednecks are talking about football when Clemson finally has a shot at an ACC tournament title! Sorry for the rant but I went to the Obrien talk at Wild Wing this Monday and he told us like it is. There was no Amato-blowing-smoke-up-your- ass-talk. We are not going to be much better next year. When asked about who was going to be at QB he replied it really doesn’t matter when the guy is lying on his back the whole time. He then went on to say that we don’t even know who will be on our OL as opposed to DL. To those that haven’t taken note our athletic program is in shambles and no person in Lee Fowler’s position would still have a job if they worked for any other company. ETC.ETC.ETC.

  82. 82 Ed89

I’m on the UT bandwagon. I will definitely root for Clemson to go as far as they can, too. Another team I really like is Pitt. I really like Jamie Dixon. Did you know that they’ve been to the title game in the Big East tourney 6 of the last 7 years?? They haven’t won many, but that’s still pretty impressive.

Whether Memphis has a good team or not does not mean that C-USA still doesn’t suck. It does. Yes, Memphis played a fairly tough non-conference schedule, but no way I root for Dorsey and those thugs. They will lose in the Sweet Sixteen because they can’t shoot free-throws, and they won’t be up by 25 points in the second half.

For us, the first thing that needs to happen is a John Wall commitment. The sad thing is that even he comes to State, he’ll probably be a one-and-doner (two tops), so we’ll just have to reload. The problem is that if we DON’T get Wall, the perception will be that we LOST the recruiting battle for him….

  83. 83 Ed89

Note to everyone…don’t spell out 16 after sweet…it will get you moderated. :)

Dream on about a big time coach ,this job especially if Sid stays around another 2 yrs to totally leave all in shambles.
Any big time coach would not take a step down and come here.
We have almost as many coaches as players on our bench and I don’t care who recruited anyone ,as a coach it is you freakin job to have your team ready and prepared. This guy has gotten a free ride for what ? Sid will never be accountable and will always place the blame elsewhere to save his ass. Oh sid really wants to win he played in 83? great who does not want to win……..Lets keep beatin this dead horse.
    Lets Go Mets

  85. 85 SaccoV

In the ACC Tourney, the only team to pull for is Clemson, because they have the best chance IMO to upset Duke or UNC. I attended Clemson for graduate school, and generally found the fans to be the State Fans of SC. Although when it comes to football, those cats are retarded. As for the NCAA tournament, there is only one choice. Given the appropriate nature of urine and urination (as an indicator of our seasons in football and basketball, and as a proper response to Lee Fowler’s existence in our Athletics Department), we must pull for Austin Peay. And we must do the cheer “Let’s go Peay” and follow that instruction, either from beer consumption or from water consumption to beat the hangover from our beer consumption. Thank you.

  86. 86 ktoh

Does Sid realize the games have had been on TV? 9 in a row did he get a contract extention?

  87. 87 LRM

    Noah,
1996. Greg Buckner dunked it with less than a second to play.

That same game Dean Smith was working the officials and Rick basically told him to shut up and sit down, and every Carolina fan cried foul that he would have to audacity to stand up to Dean.

I knew he was going to be our next coach that very moment. I was sure of it.

But I’m not a fighter pilot nor do I play for the Braves, so I guess things don’t always work out.

(Roy Williams said no to Carolina the first time they asked, too. Here’s to hope.)

  88. 88 66pack

i here that Oblinger believes Lee doing a good job for we have the most consistent atheletic teams in ACC.

I already picked up a second team with my local Big South conference team of UNCA. I have been to seven of their games and was heartbroken with their loss to Winthrop. Not only do they have the big man Kenny George who is 7′ 8 but they have a backcourt that leaves everything out there and we would gladly have welcomed here at state this year.

  91. 91 tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc

This year the coaches where lazy and the team was lazy. I think we all know that Lowe, the staff and the players didn’t get to the level they are at today by being lazy.

The think the best hope for State next year is if the coaches and team decides to rededicate themselves to the game. Sid probably needs to let a couple coaches go and bring in some tough guys to get these guys into shape and focused. Coaches have strengths and weaknesses and Sid is not surrounded by the type of people that compliment his shortcomings.

If we don’t see some changes on the coaching staff I think next year will be Sid’s last. My question is does Sid have what it takes to fire someone?

  92. 92 cwcanady

Cpt - I will be watching memphis.

did you happen to review their OOC schedule this year at all?

If I am not mistaken the cubs only played 4 teams in the top 25 this year…see link….

    http://teamrankings.com/ncb/mempower.php3?q=Memphis+Basketball

Is that a strong OOC? U tell me….

  93. 93 WolftownVA81

I will pull for VA Tech first and then Clemson. My son goes to VT and I like Greenberg inspite of his uncalled for comments when HWSNBN left. I can’t fault a guy for being pissed that an easy W may no longer be a given. Note to Seth: No worries on that score.

  94. 94 blackdom

and what level did Sid get in? He is a coach now period and should be judged by that simple fact …….the losing streak will end because he will have us playing that tough non league schedule to get us ready for the league……….and than you all will say I think Sid knows what he is doing he just needs another few season ,he loves the pack ,blah ,blah f in Blah .
Today name one school in the country who would hire him as a coach?

  95. 95 Howler

    LRM:

I agree. If at any point, Rick Barnes becomes available, we should dump what we’ve got (unless we magically have an actual basketball program again) and grab him. If we had done it 5 years into H**b S****k, life would be much lovelier now.

  96. 96 Classof89

The only possible hope we have of Rick Barnes coming here is if he somehow gets bored/disenchanted at Texas. We have ZERO advantages and numerous shortcomings (shared arena with pro team; competition against two perennial top 10 teams and HOF coaches in own backyard; program has over 15 year record of futility in eyes of any teenage recruit) compared to the position at Texas, plus there is no way we can offer more $$ than Texas.

  97. 97 boonami

damn HOLES won again and anybody catch Packer ragging on Roy for Roy’s grandstanding on Hans to the officials?? Talk about NO CLASS. Damn I hate that team.

  98. 98 CaptainCraptacular

“Is that a strong OOC? U tell me….”

Wow. Loss for words. Are you really being serious when you asked me that?

Since apparently I have to prove my point:
    http://kenpom.com/rpi.php

9th ranked OOC schedule in the country.
    including…
    Oklahoma
    UConn
    USC
    Cincinnati
    Georgetown
    Arizona
    Gonzaga
    Tennessee

Granted, a few of the names on that list had years below their normal equilibrium levels, but they still played the number one team in the SEC, the number 1 and 2 teams in the Big East, the number 3 team in the Pac-10, the number 1 team in the West Coast Conf, the number 1 team in the Metro Atlantic, and the number 1 team in the Ohio Valley. Not to mention the other “BCS” teams that wound up in the middle of their respective power conferences. And they pretty much pounded everybody but Tennessee.

Very few teams had an OOC schedule as tough as Memphis’s. I would imagine its pretty difficult to manage to get any more tough of an OOC schedule as they had. You don’t really know how strong teams are going to be when the schedule is finalized. Texas comes to mind as one who played tough OOC, but they played 4 top teams and then no-one else from a power conference.

Memphis can’t fault who they play in conference. They can only schedule tough OOC to prove they belong in the big boy conversation. Without a shadow of a doubt they did so. Its just sad that some people can’t seem to understand the facts. Which is sort of why I’m pulling for them.

  99. 99 Rick

“Very few teams had an OOC schedule as tough as Memphis’s”

When your inconference consists of UNCA wanna bes you better play a few tough OOC opponents.

I have not been impressed with Memphis. Tennessee worked em

  100. 100 highstick

Clempson fans are starting to act like Tarholes, think they are Ivy League, whine…No way! Plus my Gamecock grad son would disown me! Red and White and Garnet are good colors! No one wears Orange that has any teeth!

  101. 101 wufpup76

HA HA HA!!! Two fouls on Singler in 30 seconds of game play

  102. 102 CaptainCraptacular

You must have been watching some other years Tennessee-Memphis game. If not, your definition of work em is way different than I ever thought it meant. Memphis was leading the game with about a minute to play and a couple of loose balls didn’t go their way and they couldn’t quite hold on. Worked em? Hardly.

Best game of the entire basketball season, by far.

  103. 103 highstick

It absolutely destroys me that this season has soured me so bad that the rest of BB season isn’t even of much interest. That is, unless, Duke and Carolina have a bloodletting!

  104. 104 turfpack

JJ is a good player,he should do whatever is best for him and his family. If he returns it will be a plus for next year-hope he does. The biggest problem n.c.state has is not the coaches we have it’s the(You guessed it!You win a prize-You are the Man!)Lee-(I know everything!)Foulupacoachingsearch the A.D. at N.C.State.I haved lived a personal HELL the last 12-15yrs-My wife is a UNX GRAD.And her family as well- I ran out of excuses years ago for our athletic programs. Basicly -I don’t thing anyone really gives a shit in the athletic department any more-SHOW ME WERE I AM WRONG=I WILL SHUT UP!

  105. 105 EverettBeez

thanks for the good thoughts any of you directed towards the Ole Miss Rebels - it got us to over time. but we are out now, and probably out of the Big Dance too. I guess I’ll keep watching basketball, but heart is not in it.
At this point, I am just praying that some beats dook or crapolina for the championship. Can UCLA drop by?
