Phantom Call Gives Duke Final Two Points

As both replays in this entry indicate, there was the slightest bit of contact during the first part of Nelson’s drive that was obviously initiated by Nelson’s hook. No whistle blew at the time of the contact. The whistle didn’t blow (and a foul wasn’t called) until a part of the play where there was no contact and until Nelson jumped out of bounds with the ball still in his hands. At that point the whistle HAD to blow. But, as we all know in the ACC, the call also HAD to go against Duke’s opponent.

Since the guys at 850 The Buzz have so much time on their hands and love YouTube so much…I’m looking forward to the song that they write to coordinate with Duke’s winning points today.

Rob Roberts of the N&O was gracious enough to post a link to his video of the call, in the comments, review that and form your opinion.

You knew it was going to happen. We really had little chance. With the Devils down a point and with the ball…DeMarcus Nelson was close to traveling, then blatantly hooked Ben McCauley with his free arm as he drove to the basket (how many times does Brandon Costner get called for this?), then traveled again while simultaneously landing out of bounds with the ball in his hands.

The ACC officials call?

Foul on Ben McCauley. Two shots for DeMarcus Nelson.

Duke hits two free throws. Nobody else scores. Game over. Thanks for playing. The ACC’s darlings are protected and their seed in the NCAA Tournament doesn’t drop any further.

Shew. Disaster averted.

Coach K Wins #800 Duke 87, NC State 86

    Melt down in 3……2……..1…….
    what the heck just happened.

  2. ncsumatman Says:

why didn’t we foul out of the timeout? Obviously we would not have enough time to score, 5 seconds. farg this

  3. theTHRILL Says:

    They’re just tougher than us.

  4. RTPMedic Says:

I don’t think anyone could explain to me why the last 60 seconds was coached the way it was. When does checkers season start???

  5. Rick Says:

We are a stupid team. We have upper classmen that might as well not be playing. I have had it with this team.

  6. beowolf Says:

Amazing how one wrong call spelled the difference.

For all of you saying now that Lowe should go, now, please curl up and die. That is all.

  7. Wolf-n-Atl Says:

we lost it at the line in the last few minutes. great effort all around. if we played like this all year, we would be in the dance. too bad we waited til the second to last game of the year to show up.

  8. gumbydammit Says:

    WHAT THE F***!?!?!?!

  9. WolftownVA81 Says:

Good effort. Too bad we couldn’t close the deal…another missed opportunity. At least we were in it – but we should have won. Maybe these guys will finally realize we can win if we play as a team.

  10. theTHRILL Says:

One wrong call made the difference? I’ll gladly give them that call in exchange for two made FTs in the final minutes. Or some defense on 3pointers.

  11. WestCoast Says:

We lost, yes. But finally the boys played with what Duke does it seems every game…HEART! We play like that the entire season, we’re at 20 wins.

  12. Noah Says:

I believe we had not one, but two TOs at the end of the game.

  13. Mike Says:

Call time out to inbound in the backcourt, let them set up their press. I think the right call happened, push it up the floor and dont let them set the D. It took us 7-8 seconds all game to gt it up court, we did the right thing.

Of course, we did not exactly push it up the floor. Second guessing is easy from here, but I think the right call was made – we just should have pushed it.

  14. Rochester Says:

CBS never showed a replay, but on the play right before Costner hammered Lance Thomas, did Javy not get clotheslined? He went to the floor in a heap as the Dukies ran down the court. What the hell?

And nice that the last two points of the game are scored when Nelson gets away with a hook. Should have been McCauley shooting instead.

  15. WolftownVA81 Says:

I too am confused as to why we didn’t use the timeout after the rebound with 3 seconds left.

you know a loss here wouldnt have been that much worse than a win. this would have been that game that got everyone on the bus with lowe. not that his job is in trouble…yet. but i hope this doesnt turn into one of those things that he will win an occasional ball game and silence everyone like amato did with beatin FSU and BC in his final year…those players played their butts off today but couldnt be coached to victory…

  17. Anthony Grundy Says:

that hurts. but let’s show some composure and not overreact after 1 bad season. looks like we figured some stuff out.

Fergie is a baller, can dribble, pass, and shoot.
Tracy Smith is a ready start.
    MJ shouldn’t play anymore
    Hickson is a little ovverrated

As i stated many times on this blog, Fergie opens up the middle for guys like mccauley. that’s why he went off.

Javi is inconsistent. Glad to see him have a good game though.

You have to take Fells for what he is some good (shooting, defending) and some bad (dribbling, passing)

I will miss Gavin, who’s always played hard

Maybe we’ll make a run in the ACC tourney.

  18. branjawn Says:

Now we have to deal with our asshole Duke friends running their yaps.

  19. BAC79 Says:

They played with heart and pride. I will give them that; but, I still don’t see great chemistry with this team. There is not a whole lot of hand slapping and camaraderie amongst the players and that does not bode well for next year.

  20. beowolf Says:

Yes, they choked away a lead, they made mistakes (especially — maddeningly — the upperclassmen) but yet we were up one when McCauley was hooked for a ‘blocking’ foul that spelled the difference.

I am so SICK of the extra help Duke gets. It’s not even a matter of trying to make a ‘judgment call.’ It’s flat-out bias and I’m sick of it. This game would have changed the whole tenor of the season and y’all know that.

  21. For85 Says:

bs foul on mccauley and we went soft at the line.
    game over.

a timeout would’ve left us with an even smaller chance at making a good play. we just don’t move the ball up that fast.

  22. Rochester Says:

Bummer of a Senior Day for Sh*tty Shane. Could have been one to remember.

  23. inhoc... Says:

after all what am i mad about. i dont know about yall but i was prepaired for a certain loss before the game started. so what are we mad about…

  24. BJD95 Says:

Our team has no mental toughness, and our coach can’t do math. Those didn’t help, either. The call was shit, but we have no way of knowing whether Duke would have won anyway. My guess is they would have.
