I hear BMFD is landing a few haymakers today. per packpride, FWIW.
what is bmfd?
BMFD signed something like 9 4 star recruits. 19 in two years which is more than TOB has signed in his last 6 or 7 recruiting classes.
I am thrilled with our class and think TOB’s recruiting is as good as can be expected thus far. However, there is just as much to be excited about in Chapel Hill if you are a UNC fan.
Really? I thought their class was much lower ranked. I know they got a number of blue chippers, but still.
One TN newspaper reported Marcus Udell is signing with MTSU.
they had a much smaller class, primarily due to some of the guys they were recruiting were signing day announcements, and they don’t have 25 scholarships to give out. but they got a surprise loi from a 4 star rb (decommit from another school), and if i were a tarheel fan, i’d be happy today. i’d also be a doofus.
IIRC,
BMFD = Butch Mother F’n Davis
Is there anywhere to keep up with this stuff that is free? ESPN’s coverage sucks.
Does anyone else notice the similarity of BMFD and Chuck? Recruiting based on “stars” at the expense of other things (like having a cohesive plan for developing numbers at all positions) will get you “noticed” by the media on signing day. It will also get you in trouble 3-4 years later when you have huge holes in your roster.
Furthermore, the types of kids who wait until on or around signing day and/or change their minds on signing day are generally not the high-character kind of kids you can build a program around.
UNC lost as many as they gained today, most notably Mackey (whom we lost too) and Abrams-Ward. They picked up Coples (DE) and 4* OLB and another 4* DE.
Anyway, we haven’t lost any of our higher profile recruits to stunners, so it was a good signing day for us.
Miami signed 4 top 5 OLB’s…. how many of those actually play, and how many end up transfering?
“Furthermore, the types of kids who wait until on or around signing day and/or change their minds on signing day are generally not the high-character kind of kids you can build a program around.”
i think alot of truth is in that statement. although you can’t generalize, i think if you look at statistics you could probably back it up.

and don’t forget about non-qualifiers. a few of UNC’s top commits from last year didn’t qualify (dwight jones, tyreke powell, IIRC, maybe someone else). i’m not worried about TOB’s recruits not performing in the classroom, since that’s really part of his MO in recruiting.
unfortunately, UNC does seem to be having a good recruiting day, picking up some highly rated players. it doesn’t look like we’re in that hunt today, but we’ve still got a very good class
Butch Davis does play the “waiting game”…You’ll get lots of talent doing this, but I do think it can have negative long-term impacts. Does the name “Brian Washington” ring a bell???
I do think they had a good day, but they did miss on some key prospects too. Life in the fast lane.
9 four star recruits in this year’s class for BMFD.
Girlfriend in Coma: Butch effectively built the team that won the National Championship at Miami. Now that was at the U, so certainly part of his success stemmed from being at the U in the first place. But he does have that experience to build on, so he is way ahead of Chuck Amato already in terms of leading a program like NC State or UNC.
UNC is going to give us all we can handle IMO. Personally, I will be very surprised if Grobe can continue to beat either State or UNC consistently. At some level, recruiting matters and I think it will be very difficult for Grobe to continue recruiting less heralded prospects and have them turn into quality ACC players.
WRAL has a nice synopsis of the recruits we’ve landed at:
http://www.wral.com/sports/story/2402195/
Still I’m hoping that TOB will get more out of these players and not have to worry about some of the non-qualifier/other off the field distractions.
The ESPN rankings on the page linked were last updated on January 25.
Over on IC, they are saying that they have a 17th ranked class based on average stars and that Butch is not dominating NC recruiting because he is saving for a big haul next year. Typical message board stuff. I wonder if those truly in the know on these stories ever read forums just to get a good laugh. Some of those people (and ours too) are as dumb as a basketball bat.
Have we lost any commitments? I dont have the time now to go and compare.
For any quick readers, Butch never won a National Championship at Miami of course.
The three coaches before him won 4 national championships between them and the coach after him won 1.
So you can conclude that Miami wins national championships in football.
BTW – MIAMI now has the #1 recruiting class in the nation. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=3233800
The coach after him won the title the year after he left for the Browns. Butch went 11-1 in his last season at the U and finished #2 in the country.
It is hard to overstate the recruiting advantage that Miami enjoys in football. There are seven 4 star football players in North Carolina this year (per rivals). Go look at Miami’s list of players they signed today – they have one 5 star and nine 4 star recruits from Dade County or the 2 adjacent counties of Palm & Brower.
I’m not as much a football guy, but how can we be that low with all the buzz of these recent top recruits? they aren’t that great?
Mr. O – Our only disagreement is how much emphasis to put on the “at the U” part of BMFD’s accomplishments.
I put a lot of emphasis on that part, because when I watch the man talk, verses say Tom O’Brien or Jim Grobe, he doesn’t seem to me to be the coach that they are. And I watched his teams play this year. I think Bunting was his equal as a coach of the game.
Time will tell.
