Hess Holds Back on Roy

NCS Basketball, Quotes of Note

I fear the day that I am going to have to search our archives for the following quote from today’s Charlotte Observer in regards to the UNC-Nevada game last night. But, I just have a feeling and didn’t want to ignore this opportunity.

Referees aren’t enforcing the NCAA’s “bench decorum” mandate designed to punish angry coaches with technical fouls.

Roy Williams’ tirade over an inexplicable missed basket interference call warranted a technical under the new rules, but referee Karl Hess allowed him to protest.

    Shocking!

  2. Sweet jumper Says:

Roy gets the benefit of the doubt like Dean did. Gonzales was warned for leaving the coaching box last night.

  3. LRM Says:

Did anyone really take this mandate seriously?

SFN: The tools that called a bullshit technical on Bruce Pearl vs Xavier did.

  4. RickJ Says:

Nice find. Look for this rule to be called as randomly as the intentional foul – Did anyone else think that should have been an intentional foul on Gavin’s late breakaway lay-up? I really don’t like that rule as so many fouls are clearly intentional but it is left up to the official to call every so often – as in the New Orleans game. Look for this coaches box rule to be suddenly called at a critical juncture of some ACC game. Ted Valentine would be my guess.

  5. GoldenChain Says:

These type rules don’t apply to roywonderboy and unx. Never have never will.
What I can’t figure out is how upset do you need to get at a call when you beat someone by 36?!

  6. Girlfriend in a Coma Says:

They called box violations on both Pearl and Miller in the X v. Tenn. game. The one on Pearl was called in crunchtime IIRC. The announcers went bonkers saying what a dumb rule it was.

  7. Redblogger Says:

From what I heard on the radio last night Gonzales was warned, then later in the game, according to Tony Haynes (I think) he was at the half court line bitching about a call to the ref. Tony was wondering if the new emphasis on decorum was BS also.

  8. LRM Says:

    RickJ,
We made this exact point about the foul on Gavin last night while we watched.

    SFN,
I immediately thought of that Pearl call, too…it was like they were trying to make a point, since all the talk was that Pearl’s animation would draw many tech fouls. Which is interesting, because I’ve never once heard an instance where Pearl used foul language of any sort, which makes this whole rule openly subjective.

  9. Girlfriend in a Coma Says:

I sort of thought the Pearl call was (partly at least) a make-up call for the one they called on Miller earlier. Which makes the whole excercise seem even more feckless.

  10. packgrad2000 Says:

    RickJ-
I said the same thing. I even commented to my family who I watched it with that they’ll call that intentional half the time, and half the time they won’t. He did foul Gavin pretty hard and wrap his arms around him though.

  11. Sweet jumper Says:

Bones McKinney would be in trouble with this new rule. He attached a seat belt to his chair once!

  12. WTNY Says:

I believe Coach Lowe was recently warned/moved back by the Ref. Either Davidson or Cinci.

  13. sf59 Says:

i am telling you right now, in an ACC crunch time game, this will burn us this year…

  14. Sweet jumper Says:

That was Davidson. Valentine made a big production about outlining the edge of the coach’s box near the scorer’s table.

  15. Girlfriend in a Coma Says:

Wood (IIRC) screwed us in the ACCT against Maryland one year when he Ted up our bench for wiping the floor.

SFN: LARRY ROSE..who has since retired.

  16. LRM Says:

Is there anyone that doesn’t think Sid will pull a T against Carolina and/or Duke in a close game?

I’m not a conspiracy theorist by any means…but I’ve seen a Justin Gainey “carry” in a close game in Cameron, a five-point play in a close game in C-H, and a mysterious jump ball after Osh was pushed out of bounds in Reynolds in a close game against _________ in 1996. [worth 5 points ]

Collectively, we could make a LONG list of these, so I’ll stop now…

  17. SaccoV Says:

Once again, we see there is nothing that the NCAA won’t do to ruin the overall passion for collegiate athletics. More to the point, of course Roy won’t get the technical in that situation AT HOME, against a non-conference opponent. Tennessee was playing AT Xavier for Pearl’s ridiculous technical. As an ACC fan, I look forward to the swearing on the sidelines from coaches. In addition, how has Gary Williams not already lost his job due to this rule!

  18. package4 Says:

The “new rule” the NCAA put out was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The NBA does it every year right before the season starts. It’s either a new ball, or a new rule about bench players having to wear suits. Anything to make headlines and PTI.

  19. gcpack Says:

Did anyone notice Roy’s whining when Deer In the Headlights Hansbrough got the concussion against Rutgers?

After the game Roy cries about no foul being called on that play. When I finally saw the play on highlights I thought Roy really expects to get everything he wants.

First of all Hannyboy plays like a bull in a china shop except instead of knocking over tables it’s the other teams’ players. So here’s a guy CH has deliberately playing rough & tough when he has the ball but can’t take it when the opposition doesn’t back down.

Secondly Hannyboy slid over in front of the player driving and should have been called for blocking (maybe he was but I haven’t heard). Another Wolfpack friend of mine insists that after the contact Hannyboy flopped anyway. (Quite probable for a UNC team).

Third the drive and subsequent contact did NOT give Hannyboy the concussion. That happens all the time in games but in this case it was a million to one chance that Hannyboy’s head just happened to hit a cameraman’s knee.
But, hey, I suppose if Roy(or any other UNC coach)whines about that then maybe it should have been a personal foul called on the cameraman. Even though the cameraman isn’t a member of the opposition, the other team should still be saddled with a team foul because, hey, the offending foul was against one of the baby blue boys.

I jest of course but that is UNC basketball year in and year out. They are still boohooing over the Boston College game ten years ago in the NCAA tournament. “They were too rough and the ref didn’t call anything, whaa, whaa.”

So typical, we all should just get used to it.

  20. Texpack Says:

I have to say that sitting directly behind the State bench for three seasons in Reynolds allowed for some interesting moments. I don’t think I ever saw V get as mad at an official as he did at Spud Webb. After having Sidney run the team for three years, an out of control JUCO transfer was quite a culture shock for him.

  21. DT44 Says:

Speaking of JUCO transfers—is there a point guard somewhere Sid could recruit? He could play right away (next season)….

  22. Trip Says:

You have to give MJ/Javi more time. They’re not playing terribly anymore, MJ played good in the 2nd half, and if you consider that it was the first collegiate game for him in 1 year and 2 months against an aggressive stealing pressing team, he played closer to excellent. Let him knock off some rust, and let Javi grow this year, and I’m betting that when Mays comes to town he might be filling in backup at the 2 spot.

  23. GAWolf Says:

“Wah Wah Wa Wah wah wah.” = the practical meaning of this “statement” from Hess. It’s meaningless lip service and nothing more. I wonder what REALLY provoked the “statement?” Someone with some pull must have complained… but who?

  24. wufpup76 Says:

“I’m not a conspiracy theorist by any means…but I’ve seen a Justin Gainey “carry” in a close game in Cameron”

LRM, that call was a complete BS travesty … up on mighty Duke in Cameron with just under 1:00 to play and Gainey, with no one around him near mid call, CONVENIENTLY carries the ball … hell of a time for that call … but whatever (still bitter? ABSOLUTELY)

i’ll stop now before i go on a tangent and destroy the integrity of this thread :(

  25. GAWolf Says:

Oh hell. My bad. I misread the statement. I thought Hess made a statement after the game… which would have been odd. Sorry for my nonsensical statement above. Please disregard. Carry on. There’s nothing to see here.
