State,” Cincinnati coach Mike Cronin said. “They were just as aggressive against us.”

The Bearcats were hacks the whole game. They don’t get the calls when you no longer have the atheletes or the domineering presence of Huggy bear on the sideline.

its not like they were questionable calls… they could have called way more… every screen they set was full of elbows and moving…

I thought NC State was at a dance from the 70s in that game. Everytime they made a move around a screen the Cincy players moved to bump them or put their arm out to take the lead. LMAO…

Early on it was failry even, I think fouls were relatively close at halftime. Our guys were called for some touch fouls, too. Cincy had 24 fouls in the second half.

Here’s what State did at half that you didn’t, Coach Cronin, adjust to the refs and the way they were calling the game. Learn and move on.

    SFN — WHo is GOul?

    Isn’t the “h” missing in “Goul” :)
P.S. This post will make no sense when the spelling mistake is fixed.

The refs called the game consistently for both teams. The fact is that Cincy decided to play rougher and try to disrupt our rhythm. They paid for this by committing more fouls. There were several obvious fouls against GG that were not called. They need to quit whining. The only reason that they scored more from the field than us is because they were fouling us before we could even attempt a field goal on many possessions.

Cincy played the way they normally do — dumb.

  9. 9 redfred2No Gravatar

We were forcing the action and Cincy’s response was to just play rougher and rougher. It’s like someone else said earlier, State adjusted to the whistle, and the Bearcats coach apparently hasn’t learned how to.

“They were just as aggressive as us…” — except they (NC State) were in position more times than you, and/or got ball and no arm or body than you.

In other words, coach, you’re whining.

Whose point guard is gone for the year?

I do think that this elbows-out style of play is accepted in other conferences and in the NCAAs though. It is good to see it up close a few times before the tournament.

And just keep this game in mind when we are frustrated with ACC referees later this season. It could always be worse…

    Those were ACC refs.

I think Cincy’s coach must have read the N&O article that insinuated the refs favored us. He figured that if the Raleigh paper said the fouls were unfair then it must be true. Little did he know that the article was written by a Chapel Holian.

“Even though the Bearcats outscored the Wolfpack 67-48 from the field”

Not that we really had a choice about that one. Kinda hard to do that when you get fouled every 5 seconds

The refs let it get out of control…had they called it tight earlier, Cincy would have let up…instead, they tightened up the game in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half.

Of course, if you go with the UNC-CH Theory of Disproportionate Fouls, then the obvious reason they had more fouls is because we were ahead the whole game and they used fouling to send us repeatedly to the foul line.

Id love for someone to point out WHICH fouls were questionable. As I said in the game thread, I could have called about nine fouls per possession just on #34.

  17. 17 TripNo Gravatar

Cincy has no reason to bitch, they played intentionally hard, as was noted by how many fresh legs they were throwing out on the court. #34 should have been ejected simply on 2 possessions.

Unrelated, but I’m in Florida for the holidays which makes it a bit difficult to pickup any wolfpack hoops action via tv/radio… What’re my best bets? I was hoping that the parents would have ESPN unavailable, but that was a no go. It seems pretty hard to find online radio broadcasting it as well. It was easier when 680 AM was the flagship of the wolfpack, because I could actually pick that up down here in Florida at night. Any ideas?

^ The laughable part was that the two occasions where the Cincy player should have, without question, been T’d up for their inappropriate, aggressive reaction to a foul call on them were both BLATANT fouls. I mean, you knew they were going to commit the fouls before they even happened. They were damn near knocking guys down. They should just be thankful today that they weren’t T’d up repeatedly, making it a double-digit ass-whipping.

Chips’s article in the N&O made a point of saying the Cincy coach didn’t complain about the fouls when interviewed at the end of the game.

Lo and Behold, the next day, Cincy gets the word out the calls did not go their way.

I sit close to the court. And let me tell you, it was not basketball. Many fouls were of the knowdown variety. Others were blatant holding and grabbing. Moving screens, what is that.

If the ACC refs had done their job, Degand would likely not have been injured. Cincy wouldn’t have had any players left after the first half. We were blatantly fouled (not touch fouls) 3-4 times per possession.

    Ahhem…..WAAAAAAAAAAH!

  21. 21 TexpackNo Gravatar

The strategy was clearly to keep fouling until the refs got tired of calling fouls or State lost its concentration at the line. Fortunately for us neither happened.

Right now you can vote for Lorenzo Charles’ dunk in 1983 to win it as the greatest moment in sports on ESPN.com:

nemesisj- thanks for the link, but just so you know the link sends you to your profile. wish I could let you know more discreetly, but…

  24. 24 Lunatic FringeNo Gravatar

Cincy put on a clinic of how NOT to play defense with the over commitment in the press, horrendous footwork, and continuous reaching (since they were out of position).

  25. 25 pack80No Gravatar

And who in their right mind thinks that fouls are supposed to be even at the end of the game? That’s just stupid! Different teams, different players, different styles, different adjustments to way game is being called, different outcome.
Stop your whining and as the sports babe used to say,
    “Score more points1″

    NONQUALIFIERS! WHAT ABOUT THE NONQUALIFIERS???

  27. 27 BJD95No Gravatar

Cincy was like a team full of Warren Martins. Plow into you from behind, then throw up their hands in disbelief when the whistle blew.

  28. 28 GoldenChainNo Gravatar

I thought there were actually a lot of bumping and body fouls that WEREn’t called.
But hey, that’s just from watching college hoops for 35+ years.
