It will be really interesting to see how the coaching carousel plays out this year. Has there been a rumour floating around about TOB going to ND if Charlie the Hutt is fired?
I really think GT is making a mistake getting rid of Gailey. Who are they going to get? This guy has gotten them to bowls every year and he seems pretty loyal to the program.
^ Tenuta is going to make some defense very happy, very soon.
super: I have wondering if in this era of parity in college football, if some programs are making mistakes getting rid of coaches so quickly. Esp those coaches who are ‘successful’ like Gailey.
The GT situation goes to show how important that rivalry game is to the fan base – especially to the ones who fork over the $.
I’m pretty surprised by Gailey but maybe shouldn’t be. If you think about it, GT fball is similar to NC State basketball in some ways. They have a proud tradition and have had some success more recently, but they are always sort of in the shadow of UGa in terms of football. I guess Gailey was similar to HS in that he had some “success” but it really didn’t measure up to what they expect and he has little pizzazz to fall back on when the results don’t meet expectations. He went to middle/lower bowls but never made the BCS. Also similar that, from the outside, it looks like they should maybe be happy with what he’s provided and you hear “who are they going to get that’s any better?” After our bball situation a couple of years back, I don’t say that anymore. I suspect a lot of Tech football fans are excited for a change and I can’t blame them.
And Tenuta will definitely be getting some phone calls.
I figure if another fanbase wants a coaching change, that’s none of our business, especially since every program has different measures of success.
We didn’t care what others thought when we wanted a change, what place is it of ours to offer our opinion in that same regard?
I think Paul Johnson would be a PERFECT fit for GT. He comes from a strong academic background at Navy (and GT really values that, seriously), plus he spent all those successful years at Ga Southern, so he knows the state. Georgia, IMO, is one of the 5 best football states in the country. Keep the talent in state, you will win.
I predict Paul Johnson is the next GT coach.

Compare that to NCSU who game MOC SEVEN attempts at beating UNC during a period that we were favored to win in more games than we were the under dog. At least Georgia has been ‘expected’ to beat GT in almost every one of Gailey’s match-ups.

Personally, I think that Paul Johnson would be a home run hire for GT here. Additionally, I am glad that they are not in our division.
I sure hope Paul Johnson does not end up in the ACC. He seems a better fit at Nebraska but then again so does Jim Grobe. Both win running the ball and come from small, high academic value schools.

Is that true?? I remember UNC being vastly superior to us in all but one or two of those games.
We were better in 1998 and 1999, IMO. I don’t know that we were the favorite in 1998. We were probably favored in 1993 simply because we had beaten them seven times in a row, but that was probably a pretty even draw for the two teams.

I don’t remember the exact years now…but I remember this being one of ‘my stats’ back during the MOC debates.
One of the reasons that I remember it is because I had a ‘standing’ bet with the spread against one of my Carolina buddies…so, I was always in tune to the point spread.
We were hands-down favored in 1993, 1998, 1999.
The two years that Carolina was truly dominant were 1996 and 1997.
They killed us in 1994 by worse than the 31-17 score…but, we actually had a better season than they did and entered the game 5-1.
Anyone offering suggestions for the Duke job?

* GT will owe Chan Gailey $4 million. That’s right, $4 million.

Is $4 million the largest buyout in ACC history? I can’t remember what UVa owed Gillen.

“Gailey, 55, was 44-32 at Tech, 28-20 in ACC games, but 0-6 against Georgia. He has four years remaining on a contract that calls for him to receive more than $4 million if Tech terminates it without cause.”
The Southern Miss coach is also out after 14 straight winning seasons. He’s an alum who was seemingly mentioned every year for higher profile gigs.
Amazing coaching carousel this year. Glad we aren’t riding it.
It’s very hard to see paying $4MM to get rid of a guy that has been as solid as Gailey. I mean, how many guys do they lose to academics seemingly every year? How many times do they beat UGA for players? This is a super tough job.

GT has a lot of things going for it – location, academics, tradition, recruiting base. But, one huge negative for a coach is that rivalry with UGA and the annual game to end the season. Tough situation when you take into account the academic requirements for incoming recruits and the lack of majors to hide some borderline students. No matter what you do in the ACC, you have arguably your toughest game on the schedule to end the season against your most hated rival.
It is almost amazing that GT has been as good as they have been for so many years now. It will be very interesting to see who they hire.
^ On the other hand, there are only 2 D1 schools in a state that produces probably 2-3x the number of quality high school football players than what the state of NC produces.
I think GT fans are like NC State fans in the UGA aspect. In basketball, we dont demand to beat UNC all the time, but we demand to win enough to make it interesting, and win a few important games as well. V had a poor record against UNC, but he won enough and he won important games (like ’83 and ’87 ACCT games against UNC).
I would hire Paul Johnson right now if I was the GT AD
Trout: I agree to an extent. But you and I both know that Atlanta is SEC country and that there is a larger Walmart contingent of Georgia fans in that state than there are UNC fans in NC. Not to mention you have UT, Auburn, Alabama, SC, Clemson, Fla, and FSU either within a few hours of Atlanta or within a few hours of the Ga. border. But you are right that there is a larger number of Div. 1 recruits in the state of Ga. every year.
GT has both its positives and negatives, but it certainly isn’t an easy job IMO. Has GT been as good as they have been because their program naturally wins at a pretty high level? Or have they been winning 7 games per year because Gailey has been doing a good job?
When he lost all of those players to academics a few years ago and had the NCAA violations I thought GT was going to fall off the face of the Earth.
NC State fans wont believe this, but UGA gets more preferential treatment over GT by the Atlanta media than the Tarheels over NC State do by the Raleigh or Charlotte media.
Make no mistake about it, while Atlanta is a great city, it is first and foremost an SEC town and a UGA dominated town.
What has hurt GT most is that UGA, after 12 years of post Dooley flop coaches like Jim Donnan and Ray Goff, has found a terrific coach in Mark Richt.
One wonders what UGA would have been like if Dick Sheridan had taken that UGA offer back in 1988.
