On a night that Tommy Bowden breathes a sigh of relief and as Ted Roof waits to hear from Duke, we thought that we would open a quick entry for discussion and sharing of links and rumors for those folks out there interested in the coaching carousel.

(Speaking of Ted Roof – has NC State even had the opportunity to play a Ted Roof coached Duke team?)

As I scan articles on the internet, tt never ceases to amaze me how inter-twined so many of these jobs are. For example, check out this article about Bill Callahan and the Nebraska situation

On the day that Callahan coached his last game, Arkansas defeated No. 1 LSU, 50-48, in triple overtime. Before Pederson hired Callahan, he tried to hire Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt and nearly succeeded. In the end, Nutt couldn’t leave his home state.

Four years later, Pederson is out of a job. Nutt is on his way out of Fayetteville. The point is not that Nebraska should have hired Nutt or that Osborne will. But the next Nebraska coach will be closer on the coaching spectrum to Osborne than to Callahan.

Dennis Franchione stepped aside at Texas A&M for an undisclosed buyout. This article has deep detail about Coach Fran. ESPN’s Pat Forde had an article about Fran and A&M’s coming search that can be seen by clicking here. The Houston Chronicle ran this quick entry regarding rumors surrounding the A&M job:

Speculation for weeks has strong mutual interest existing between Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and Texas A&M according to the Houston Chronicle. The Tigers’ nine-year head coach served as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator in 1994 and has the defensive pedigree the school longs for.

Tuberville, however, is far from the lone candidate whose name has circulated for weeks as Franchione’s departure became more imminent. Current South Carolina and former Florida coach Steve Spurrier’s name has come up, along with Boise State’s second-year coach Chris Petersen, Cal coach Jeff Tedford, West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez, North Carolina coach Butch Davis and Texans assistant Mike Sherman.

You may remember that SFN shared with you last year that the Texans’ Mike Sherman worked very hard behind the scenes to position himself for the NC State job before we hired Tom O’Brien.

Let’s hope someone snatches up Grobe and the cellar dweller over-sized high school in Winston returns to its former self.
We haven’t played Dook since 03. Gotta love this expansion. Thanks again Johnny Swofford.

Good article on Callahan, and it sums up all the frustration the Husker fan’s I know felt. (my dad particularly). Callahan’s greatest sin? Overseeing the total collapse of the defense. That humiliation was just too much for the Husker faithful. Give it to the administration at UN to respond rapidly to the situation, which included fan unrest.

Candidates? Turner Gill will get a lot of support – a former Osbourn player & current head coach (Buffalo). Being African-American sure doesn’t hurt him. My dad also mentioned the defensive coordinator at LSU, Bo Pelini, is getting a lot of mention among the Husker faithful. He was the DC at Nebraska in ’03, when they went 10-3, and was interim coach for the bowl game that year – a win.

BUT my dad though Pelini’s team would end up like Amato’s – I had to laugh when he said this – Big defense, with plenty of penalties on the field and trouble off the field. That won’t sit well with Husker fans either.

TAMU – the Birmingham tv stations have been obsessing over Francone’s situation for the entire season, right from the git go. Not because Fork-Tongue Tubberville’s name keeps getting mention, but because NO one, and I mean NO ONE, leave Alabama. Period. Ever. Unless they fire you. Or you die. Death is ok because Coach Bryant needs your help.

Tubberville has said repeatedly he has no interest in the TAMU job, and he is happy at Auburn. The first time my wife heard that she said “oh, he is leaving – count on on it.” Auburn fan on the sports radio this afternoon said he just didn’t trust Tubby. And he shouldn’t. As an Ole Miss Man, I can tell you this, that sumbitch will promise to stay forever, then sneak the f*&^ out of town in the dead of night.

And as an Ole Miss man – man, what the heck is going on in Oxford? I am probably the only person here who watched us totally implode and loose the Egg Bowl to Miss State. Ugly. You think State had a bad season – not one win in conference for Ole Miss. I believe this is the worse year ever for Ole Miss football.

This will be a tough job to fill, as always. Second smallest budget in the SEC (Only Vandy has less money to spend) small town, no media to speak of, and while it recedes every year, the legacy of segregation still lingers. No clue what will happen there, but I’ll pass what I find out along.

Nice we aren’t looking this year.

How in the f*ck did Dook lose that game today? And exactly what the f*ck were Carolina players doing after they won? They won three games this year…two against barely competent middle-of-the-pack ACC squads and one against a team that has won one game in the last decade.

What….they couldn’t find an inflatable football helmet to tackle?

  4. EverettBeez 11/25/2007 at 12:35 AM #

lol – what did they do Noah? tear down the goal posts?

  5. PackerInRussia 11/25/2007 at 8:18 AM #

That win for Carolina will be enough for the media to spend the off-season talking about how much promise the young Holes have for the upcoming years. Can’t wait for more sleeping giant talk. How long does a giant have to be asleep before you realize he’s dead?

I don’t really understand the dismay at Clempson with their coach. He is obviously a stellar recruiter. He has consistently gotten better over time. It took a miracle play by one of the best quarterbacks in the nation for BC to beat them. Clempson fans are just too tough.

  7. Texpack 11/25/2007 at 10:03 AM #

Sherman spent a few years on the staff at A&M under Slocum. Between those years and Kubiak’s Aggie pedigree he’s as well positioned/connected as he needs to be. From the rumblings around Houston, I’d put him ahead of Tuberville.

The Hogs are quite a story. Their relationship with Nutt started to turn after the Nebraska hostage situation. Before last season he was forced to bring in an OC. To hear the Nutt haters tell it, his ego couldn’t stand all of the love and attention heaped on the OC (Gus Malzahn). The OC brought 4 or 5 top flight recruits from his high school with him including the Parade National POY, Mitch Mustain. All of these recruits and the OC were gone after last season. There have been rumors of an affair between Nutt and an Arkansas news anchor based on hundreds of text messages between the two of them as well. Nutt’s rather abrasive style with the media and his critics, very similar to CTC, hasn’t bought him any slack from the fans either. The Hog nation was pretty stuck on the idea of hiring BD so I don’t sense a real plan B is in place. Any buyout here will get pretty ugly. Nutt will make the Hogs pay to get rid of him.

Yes Noah, What happened.. I did not see the game. My brother is a hole fan and went to the game and he said dook totally deserved to win and that it was a very ugly game from UNC. Since he wears blew glasses, he would not think anything unbecoming of the team.

He did say he heard the chair of the BOT of trustees was ‘getting the business’ all day.

  9. Wulfpack 11/25/2007 at 10:38 AM #

Here’s one Wolfpack fan who hopes Wake can hold onto Grobe. I have faith that TOB can elevate our program in a similar fashion to the point where WFU/NCSU games will have conference championship implications.

The reason Duke lost is the same reason that they lost last year to Wake Forest: no field goal kicker. You’d think that even Duke could find an adequate kicker. Of course I am worried that we may have similar problem ourselves next year.

  11. RickJ 11/25/2007 at 12:09 PM #

It would be interesting to see what Grobe could do at a big time football school. Personally, I would be shocked to see him make a move. He is clearly a terrific coach, especially for schools such as Ohio and Wake Forest but there are not many places where you can win 50% and 54% of your games respectively and be considered a genius. Another way to look at this is to ask 5 State fans and 5 Wake Fans how Grobe did against Amato – at least 9 will say Grobe dominated Amato when his record against him was 3 – 3. If you look closely at Grobe’s overall record, it has as much to do with the ineptness of Duke, UNC & NC State than anything else.

At Wake he is making over a million a year. He has as close to a tenured position as can be had at a BCS school. Why on earth would he leave?

  12. Wulfpack 11/25/2007 at 12:27 PM #

^Agreed. He’s great for Wake and great for the ACC. As the conference as a whole spirals downward, we need to hold onto the great ones and build the other programs to a higher level.

  13. noah 11/25/2007 at 1:33 PM #

After the game, UNC players sprinted around the stadium about nine times, dragged out the bell, took turns ringing, took turns taking little rides on it like they were kids on the train at Pullen Park, ran over to their families, made faces for the camera, told the world how big their d–ks are and were a confetti shower and a trip to disney world away from acting like they had won the Super Bowl.

No, no, no…I get it. Dook is your REAL rival. I get it. But Dook has won nine games this ENTIRE century and four of those have come against The Citadel, VMI, W. Carolina, and Rice.

Dook absolutely should have won the game. It was 7-7 late in the game. The teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter and then Dook drove about sixty yards in 90 seconds at the end to line up for an easy field goal with one second left.

The kicker didn’t just miss it, he yanked it wide left by about forty feet. It looked like Dr. Pepper was holding a contest and had pulled someone out of the stands to kick it.

  14. BJD95 11/25/2007 at 2:22 PM #

I think Grobe stays as long as Wellman is there. If Wellman ever leaves, the Grobe watch can start.

  15. Mr O 11/25/2007 at 2:28 PM #

Doesn’t Nebraska need an AD too?

The question on whether Grobe leaves is whether or not he wants a shot to win a national title.

  16. smile102 11/25/2007 at 2:34 PM #

Noah, bad teams find a way to lose, and it was a competitive race to see which bad team could pull it off: certainly a case of Duke snatching defeat from the jaws of victory…. but they’ve done that so often this decade. And UNC celebrated like they had won the NC; perhaps just relief at finally wining a close one, or not losing to Duke, or that the dismal season is finally over. I don’t understand why Duke tolerates a “worst in nation” caliber football team. Win 5 or 6 a year and you can get lost in the crowd, but their level of ineptitude hurts the school’s image.

  17. BoKnowsNCS71 11/25/2007 at 2:40 PM #

Just my opinion. Grobe is content with what he has. Expectations are not exacerbated at WF. three years ago they gave him a 10 year contract just to tell them they were happy with him and what he stands for. I just think the guy is one of those rare coaches who doesn’t care about the pressures of a major program with all the lunatic fans that go with it.

I know it may not sound like it make sense but I once won a bet with a friend when he told me that Coach K would go to the Lakers for $30 million and I said he would not. There are intangibles with some people where being happy exceeds the need to be (super) rich.

  18. Mr O 11/25/2007 at 4:12 PM #

Coach K can win at the highest level at Duke. Grobe cannot do the same at Wake Forest which is the difference. Still, Grobe may not care about winning at the highest level.

  19. choppack1 11/25/2007 at 5:12 PM #

“don’t really understand the dismay at Clempson with their coach. He is obviously a stellar recruiter. He has consistently gotten better over time. It took a miracle play by one of the best quarterbacks in the nation for BC to beat them. Clempson fans are just too tough.”

I think the Clemson football and NC State basketball situations are/were very similar. You’ve got a rabid fanbase in a huge stadium/arena who expect success. Both programs won national championships in the 80s and had some hard times in the 90s and have yet to recapture the magic they had in the 80s.

I think Bowden tenure is very similar to Sendek in that he’s had some success, gotten to the post-season, he’s gotten them really close to these moments but hasn’t been able to get a title or anything really tangible for the fans to feel great about. Like Sendek, his team seems to peak at all times but the right ones – they’ll start out slow, and get it together or they’ll start out fast and fall apart. This year, all they had to do was beat a reeling BC team at home and at night to play for the championship – they didn’t do it.

Are Clemson fans foolish to think that they should be able to be able to win a division consisting of BC, Wake, NC State, UMd and a broken FSU team? I don’t think so. Most of their fans are OK w/ where they are at – but they’re frustrated.

OTOH, you’ve got Hog fans. Arkansas somehow is putting together winning records in the most brutal conference in football. Arkansas is a small state, w/ OK talent, but not as much talent as Texas, Louisianna, Missippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia or Florida. They don’t have the history or fan support of Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, or Georgia. They don’t have the fan support of South Carolina. If all things are equal, Arkansas should only be better than the following schools: Vandy, Ole Miss, Missippi State, Kentucky and South Carolina. Yet they finished 8-4 this year and have been to the SEC championship at least twice during Nutt’s tenure.

I understand that his teams are ugly to watch. They are. However, they are tough and somehow find a way to be competitive and pretty good.

  20. Wulfpack 11/25/2007 at 5:13 PM #

^Grobe won the ACC last year and earned a birth in a BCS game. Is that not the “highest level”???

  21. Mr O 11/25/2007 at 5:37 PM #

In a year where everything went perfect for Wake, they won a bunch of close games in one of the weakest ACCs in history and still lost three games. At programs like Nebraska, Michigan, LSU, etc….when those programs are rolling losing three games is a worst case scenario even when the Big 10, Big 12 and SEC are strong. Wake is still in a situation where they will get passed over in the bowl selection process for teams with larger fanbases. That doesn’t happen at Nebraska or Michigan.

Again, Grobe may not want to win at the highest level and he may very well be content at Wake Forest. But if he remains at Wake Forest, then there are things he will never accomplish as a football coach and in some ways he will always be behind the 8 ball in some respect because of the limited upside of Wake’s program.

I know he’s a tarheel fan, but he is still your brother. I don’t know if I would have said he wears the standard issue, chapel hill, “blew” glasses. At least not when speaking about my own brother anyway.

  23. redfred2 11/25/2007 at 6:06 PM #

Now chop, did you get confused again? Bringing up the subjects of winning traditions and ” “, all in the same post again?

A few good games played here and there, not any series of great games, doesn’t really translate into “peaking” either.

  24. Octavian 11/25/2007 at 6:32 PM #

I believe in this day and age of parity even the mightiest of the uber programs will go through cycles. Case in point — before Saban arrived at LSU, it was a graveyard for coaches and they had losing seasons in 11 out of 14 previous years.

  25. EverettBeez 11/25/2007 at 6:42 PM #

Osbourn is the “acting” AD at Nebraska – so they will need a permanent one. He might run for Governor – the current guy is going to run for Senate, so the seat will be open. It will be a tough call for the Husker faithful – to have Osbourn run the state or the athletic department.

Grobe’s got an ideal situation in many ways, at least for the time being. He’s winning at an academically rigorous university that’s got a beautiful campus and a student body small enough to develop a real sense of community. I’d be very content there. You’ve got to wonder if he is.

By Carolina buddy called during the dook game yesterday. He and my other friends there all agreed dook looked much better then they did. When Carolina won, he said he just started laughing.
