NBA Alumni Teams (v2007)

Around the turn of the last decade — the 1990s decade — NC State alums dotted the rosters of NBA teams. Names like Nate McMillan, Charles Shackleford, Vinny Del Negro, Chucky Brown…even Chuck Nevitt were competing in the league and representing the Pack faithful well.

At that time, three Atlantic Coast Conference programs had the most alumni on NBA rosters than any other programs in the country– UNC led the way, followed by NC State and then Georgia Tech. I can’t remember the exact numbers…but it was something like 13 to 12 to 11 at one point.

You know the interim story of the last 15 years — gross mismanagement, guilt-ridden campus administrations, overzealous academic restrictions, administrators with undue loyalty to individuals instead of the programs, etc. etc. This has created a current-day-situation where NC State has but a handful of former players in the NBA – some of which don’t even want to claim the program and one (Damien Wilkins) who chose to finish his college career at another school.

Of course, we all believe that Sidney Lowe’s presence is about to change this landscape. Until then, we have to live viacariously through others.

With this said – if you haven’t been following some of the work the N&O’s ACCNow Blog has been doing regarding a hypothetical UNC vs Duke alumni competition, then you may enjoy this enhanced version of their work that includes Arizona, Kansas and UConn. It’s interesting stuff that junkies will enjoy.

You havbe to have talent to win. What we had was either over rated or not utilized properly. I agree that Sid will change that. We already have several players that I think have a future in the pros.

“(Damien Wilkins) who chose to finish his college career at another school”

Wilkins didn’t choose to leave, he wasn’t allowed back on the team.

with Hodge, Ced, Fells, Grant & Costner all hopefully making/staying on rosters soon NCSU should be represented better.

SFN: Only in HSSland does a player (Hodge) who hasn’t made the league get credit for making the league

the only people Herb can be credited with getting into the NBA are stackhouse and Wilcox, beacause had they come to state they would have suffocated under “the system” and would be worse now than they were when they were 17yrs old and would have never made the NBA. Herb shwagdeck.. i salute you for allowing these young men to follow their dreams and not holding them back.

“Wilkins didn’t choose to leave, he wasn’t allowed back on the team.”

From what I remember, it was that he wasn’t guaranteed that his playing time wouldn’t go down, and the coach refused to guarantee anything.

for what i see now we do not have any nba players on our team right now . costner had a good if not great acc tour. but he is not ready for nba not even close to being ready. look at nit tour. he was a no show first two . i think he needs to show more than what he showed when we played marist and drexel. come on 9 and 10 points .

Stackhouse was during the Les Robinson era.
I applaud Herb for the way he handled the Wilkins situation.

Someone on another board said that Josh Powell was on campus recently playing pick-up games with some former and current players. Apparently, Javi and J.J. have been playing, too.

The story I’ve heard is that Stack was a State fan and we were in good with him, and then UNC turned their focus on him and he went to the dark side. As I recall there were rumors of a phone call from MJ turning the tide.

Hodge has played a few NBA minutes, so he counts.

Not his fault he got shot in Denver and had to re-learn how to play after 4 years of Herb-ball…

As for NBA players- I think Coster and McCauley from last year’s team would make an NBA roster.

McCauley will not have a very good chance of playing in the NBA. Not nearly big enough to play in the post and no real mid-range game to speak of up to this stage in his career. I say Costner and Fells have the best shot from guys on last year’s squad. I say fells b/c he has the athleticism necessary, just not nearly the smarts or focus on the floor.

i think ben and costner had good years . but in no way they are ready for the nba . maybe in a few years . as for hodge hardest working player i have ever seen at state .but sorry i do not see him making it in nba . and as much as i am glad that herb is gone hodge was a perfect fit for his type of basketball.

Cosnter would likely earn a spot as a a shooter, he needs to improve his athletic ability to be a lottery pick.

Fells game has to improve greatly, in the NBA 6’6″ guys who can jump are easy to find, though he could earn a stopper role.

Grant and his plethora of turnovers will end up overseas.

Ced is doing well, his kind of talent and ability to play defense are rare. He is predominantly a back-up now, but as he learns more about offense he will see more time.

Hodge is going nowhere, and unless he can develop into a big PG, he has no future in the league with his undependable shot and slight frame.

bTHEred – I would look for Hodge to resurface in the NBA. He’ll do anything to play at that level. I think eventually he’ll get another, better shot. His frame isn’t a big deal at the 1 or 2 spot.

choppack/ hodge is no nba type player he is like i said above .hard worker . but not nba material

    07/06/2007 at 11:08 PM #

brickman – I’d be tempted to agree w/ you because he can’t shoot. However, after watching the NBA this year, I don’t think that matters any more.

that is not the only part of game ha needs to work on …that is why i was not worried about costner leaving . he has long way to go.if he had not had the acc tou. we would not even be talking about it .
